Consequences of Greed

Watching the two banter, Evan Yang finally couldn't help but say, "Do you two think my place is just for fun?"

Soul-Reaping Water quickly shut its mouth, but as a newcomer, it just laughed and said, "Your place is pretty good. Even if I were outside, I’d still want to stay here."

"Alright, but there’s one condition." Evan Yang, seeing he couldn’t drive it away, came up with an idea and smiled.

"What condition?" Soul-Reaping Water asked suspiciously.

"You must always behave yourself, and whenever I need you, you must show up." Evan Yang said with a smile.

"That’s no problem. Whenever you need a helper, I’ll assist you unconditionally." Soul-Reaping Water replied, thinking it wasn’t losing out.

"Good. To get to know you faster, tell me all your abilities." Evan Yang smiled, as if inviting trouble aboard.

Soul-Reaping Water, this old monster, knew this was Evan Yang’s territory and that it couldn’t attack him here. It felt its actions were restricted, so even inside Evan’s Divine Spirit, it couldn’t make a move—though Evan himself didn’t know this.

So it honestly told Evan Yang all its abilities.

Just like before, when Evan encountered it, it could hide inside water, remaining completely silent and undetectable by any divine sense. It could also control water and form a giant water-body at will.

After learning all this, Evan Yang thought it sounded pretty good, but he didn’t agree right away. Instead, he said, "There’s still something I don’t understand."

"What is it?" Soul-Reaping Water asked curiously.

"How did you know I had souls on me? And why do you need them?" Evan Yang asked.

"The water here is special, and I’m not ordinary water either. I can reflect people’s souls, not to mention the souls attached to you. As for why I need them, of course it’s to devour them and strengthen myself." Soul-Reaping Water replied, sounding a little aggrieved.

"Devour them? You’re pretty bold. Do you often devour souls?" Evan Yang asked skeptically.

"I can devour fully formed yin souls, and even your fully formed soul if I wanted to." Soul-Reaping Water answered.

"I see. Then, since you’ve stayed here so many years, you must know what that door is, right?" Evan Yang looked curiously at the nearby door.

"That’s the Gate of Reincarnation. Once you enter, you can never come back, no matter how powerful you are." Soul-Reaping Water said.

"So this really is the Cycle of Rebirth." Evan Yang muttered.

"Is there anything else?" Soul-Reaping Water asked.

"Nothing else. Just remember what I said—always behave yourself. If you dare to have any crooked thoughts, you’ll regret it." Evan Yang warned.

"I won’t, absolutely not. You’re my master now." Soul-Reaping Water didn’t dare act out—even as an old monster, it had to behave in front of Evan Yang.

Seeing there was nothing else, Evan Yang walked back and soon arrived at the edge of the cliff.

This brought up a new problem—the road back was full of pseudo-Immortal souls. How should he deal with them?

Thinking about it, Evan Yang remembered the newly recruited Soul-Reaping Water. As an old monster here, it should have a way. So Evan asked, "Pseudo-Immortal souls—can you defeat them?"

"Pseudo-Immortal souls? No, but I can scare them away." Soul-Reaping Water said.

"Scare them away?" Evan Yang was puzzled.

"Because my water is special. When they see it, they’ll be afraid." Soul-Reaping Water explained.

Evan Yang was curious, so he let it come out. As a result, a water shield appeared on Evan’s hand.

"A water shield?" Evan Yang looked at the strange water and muttered.

"I can transform into anything, but this is pretty good. As long as you carry me, they won’t dare come near." Soul-Reaping Water said proudly.

"Alright, stop showing off." Evan Yang saw its smug look and felt like teaching it a lesson with Sacred Flame again.

"Eh, just let me be proud for a bit." Soul-Reaping Water laughed.

"Do you have a name?" Evan Yang asked helplessly.

"Yes! The Invincible Whirlwind Soul-Reaping Water, Elder Monster of a Billion Years." The water laughed and announced its name.

"Pfft, are you even embarrassed saying a name like that? Enough, from now on you’ll just be called Soul-Reaping Water." Evan Yang felt a headache from the long name.

Soul-Reaping Water complained, "You cut off all the impressive parts?"

"Go brag to others with that name, not to me. I can’t listen to it." Evan Yang said, feeling chills.

Soul-Reaping Water had no choice but to accept Evan Yang’s first command—not to brag about its impressive title in front of him.

Once it stopped rambling, Evan Yang picked up the shield. At first, he didn’t really believe this water could scare off pseudo-Immortal souls.

But soon, what happened made Evan Yang believe. Those pseudo-Immortal souls scattered as soon as they saw the water shield on Evan’s hand, as if it could annihilate souls.

"Can you really annihilate souls?" Evan Yang muttered.

"I don’t know. I was born this way. Anyway, whenever yin souls see me, they back off." Soul-Reaping Water laughed.

"You really are impressive." Evan Yang praised.

"Of course." Soul-Reaping Water laughed.

"You always get like this when praised. I really can’t stand it." Evan Yang said helplessly.

Soul-Reaping Water was very pleased, and Evan Yang could only carry this show-off around the pseudo-Immortal souls’ territory, coming and going as he pleased.

Just as he was about to leave, he stopped and muttered, "You really can’t deal with them?"

"I told you, I can only scare them. If you want to kill them, you need to have the ability yourself, and take me to slay them." Soul-Reaping Water replied.

"So you mean, as long as your water touches them, it can affect them?" Evan Yang asked.

"Yes, it’s really that simple." Soul-Reaping Water knew it was the nemesis of soul forms, so it spoke confidently.

"They’re so fast, it’s hard to touch them. Forget it, I’ll deal with it another day." Evan Yang said after thinking for a while.

Evan Yang really wanted to catch a pseudo-Immortal soul, but they were so powerful and fast that even his own speed couldn’t keep up. Soul-Reaping Water only restrained them, but couldn’t attack quickly.

Since he couldn’t catch one, Evan Yang had no choice but to take Soul-Reaping Water and return to the bridge.

But he found those people were still on the other side.

"They really won’t give up." Evan Yang muttered.

Evan Yang was forced to curse them. If he went out now, he’d definitely be discovered. But if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be able to catch enough high-level yin souls to report back.

"Let’s check somewhere else for another route." Evan Yang looked at the bridge, then quietly slipped away.

Those people had no idea Evan Yang was alive, much less that he’d already been here once. They only watched out for the high-level yin souls behind them, afraid of being ambushed.

Once Evan Yang’s spiritual sense lost sight of them, he slowly walked along the Blood River.

"Such a huge river—there can’t be only one bridge, right?" Evan Yang muttered.

Not believing there was only one bridge, Evan Yang kept walking. But after days and nights, he didn’t see a single bridge, only staring across from the opposite bank. More than once, he felt tempted to fly over, but there seemed to be a force pulling people into the Blood River.

"Soul-Reaping Water, you really haven’t been outside?" Evan Yang, unfamiliar with the area, hoped to get answers from Soul-Reaping Water.

Unfortunately, Soul-Reaping Water knew nothing, like an old monster from the deep mountains, clueless about the outside world.

"That’s troublesome. Who knows how long those guys will stay?" Evan Yang had already spent days here without seeing a bridge, and was considering retreating.

But he refused to give up and kept walking.

After about half a month, he found himself at the edge of a cliff of black mud.

"Is this just going in circles?" Evan Yang muttered, noticing the Blood River led to a small tunnel beside the black mud.

This discovery made Evan Yang realize it was likely just going in circles. Helpless, he decided to cut straight through the middle to see if there was a way to cross the bridge.

"Huh? They’re gone?" Evan Yang returned to the bridge and found those people had disappeared.

To confirm his suspicions, Evan Yang carefully crossed the bridge. On the other side, he found only a few high-level yin souls in some places, but nothing else.

"Looks like they left." Once sure the others were gone, Evan Yang planned to collect high-level yin souls.

Seeing Soul-Reaping Water was no longer needed here, Evan Yang planned to put it away. But Soul-Reaping Water laughed, "There are lots of yin souls I like here—just take me with you."

"Take you? Won’t you just eat them?" Evan Yang felt a headache thinking about Soul-Reaping Water and the three soul fragments—all would devour souls. He needed to catch the remaining souls and leave quickly.

"I only need a few, and I can help you find them." Soul-Reaping Water said.

"You can help me find them?" Evan Yang asked suspiciously.

"Yes, I’m sensitive to yin souls—I can easily help you find them." Soul-Reaping Water said.

"Are you sure?" Evan Yang was a bit skeptical.

"Really." Soul-Reaping Water replied.

So, half-believing, Evan Yang brought it along. As Soul-Reaping Water said, it could sense where many yin souls were.

Every time Evan Yang caught one, it would tell him the direction for the next. He no longer had to search far and wide like before to find high-level yin souls.

With Soul-Reaping Water’s help, Evan Yang quickly caught enough yin souls.

Seeing a thousand high-level yin souls in his Soul-Locking Bag, Evan Yang smiled happily. With them, he could exchange for that formula.

"Now can I eat some?" Soul-Reaping Water asked greedily when Evan Yang had collected enough.

"No problem. Let’s go, I’ll let you devour some yin souls." Evan Yang said with a smile.

So, over the next few days, Evan Yang watched Soul-Reaping Water devour those yin souls. Not only that, the three Aggregated Soul Fragments also joined in.

Only when they were all sated did they return to Evan Yang’s body.

The three Aggregated Soul Fragments went back first, followed by Soul-Reaping Water. But as soon as it entered Evan Yang’s spiritual domain...

Evan Yang felt as if his spiritual domain was about to explode.

"No way?" Evan Yang recognized the symptoms—it felt just like when his divine domain expanded before.

Soul-Reaping Water knew it had caused the change and said awkwardly, "Sorry, I devoured too much and triggered a transformation here."

Evan Yang was speechless. He quickly found a safe place, entered the tower, and began his secluded cultivation.
