Unexplained Hostility

1/4/2026

"What do you mean 'and then'? There's no 'and then'!" The girl snapped, furious and embarrassed. "Anyway, I won't allow you to lay a finger on Jay Kee!"

She wasn't the type to join just any lunch or dinner outing.

Hearing Cherry say that, the girl relaxed, but quickly grew angry again. "So, are you saying he's not good enough for you?"

Cherry Miller couldn't help but laugh. "You're so unreasonable. First you worry I'll steal Jay Kee from you, then you blame me for not liking him. So, tell me, am I supposed to compete for him or not?"

"You! I...!" The girl was so flustered she couldn't get a single word out.

He couldn't afford to lose such a good sponsor!

Cherry Miller shook her head speechlessly.

Ah, youth.

At her age, Cherry was always buried in her studies and work—she never had time for these kinds of thoughts.

Cherry took a couple bites, then noticed Jay Kee hadn't touched his food. She asked, puzzled, "Why aren't you eating?"

Since Jenna Kim wasn't a sponsor, Jay Kee absolutely wouldn't get involved with her.

Yeah, someone like her—how could she ever deserve a simple life?

That filthy man was always there, reminding her of the difficulties she had to face.

"You still eat pretty well, right?" Jay Kee asked.

Sean gave Jay Kee a helpless look. "You'll regret this!"

Cherry Miller took a deep breath, steadied herself, and finally left the restroom.

As soon as she stepped out, she saw Jay Kee waiting anxiously outside.

"Did Jenna Kim say something to you just now?" Jay Kee asked nervously.

"Jenna Kim?" Cherry paused, then realized, "You mean the girl with all those colors in her hair?"

Jay Kee nodded quickly and blurted out, "Don't listen to her nonsense! There's nothing going on between me and Jenna Kim! I swear, I never mess around where I live! She's just got a crush on me, I promise I'm not two-timing anyone!"

Cherry Miller chuckled softly. "She didn't say anything. No need to get so worked up."

Jay Kee was genuinely anxious, practically ready to swear an oath. "Sis Cherry, you have to believe me! No, I need to go clear things up with Jenna Kim right now!"

Jay Kee turned to leave, but Cherry grabbed his arm. "What's the rush?"

Jay Kee wanted to go but couldn't, and he didn't want to shake Cherry off, so he was sweating from anxiety.

He couldn't afford to lose such a good benefactor!

He couldn't let Jenna Kim mess up his prospects!

Everyone in the factory knew Jenna Kim liked him.

But Jay Kee didn't like Jenna Kim.

His reason? Jenna Kim was broke too.

Jay Kee's dream was to find a wealthy sponsor and make something of himself.

Since Jenna Kim wasn't a sponsor, Jay Kee absolutely wouldn't get involved with her.

Jay Kee was shamelessly honest about being a little opportunist.

If Jenna Kim ruined his future today, he'd definitely go all out against her.

"Alright, I believe you," Cherry said, genuinely wanting to avoid trouble. "She really didn't say much—she's just a kid."

Just then, a few people walked over from a distance. Seeing Jay Kee, they cheered, "Jay Kee, you're here? It's been ages since we hung out! Let's grab lunch together?"

A hint of hesitation flashed across Jay Kee's face.

Cherry immediately let go of his arm and said, "Go have lunch with your friends. I'll head back."

Jay Kee hesitated, then said, "Forget it, maybe another day."

One of the guys glanced at Cherry and said, "Let this beauty join us too! Fate brought us together—let's all have lunch and get to know each other better."

"Sorry, I have other things to do today," Cherry Miller declined politely.

She wasn't the type to join just any dinner gathering.

Countless people had tried to invite her to dinner, but she'd turned them all down.

Seeing Cherry wasn't interested, Jay Kee immediately said, "I've got stuff to do today too. Next time, lunch is on me."

Jay Kee ditched the group and happily followed Cherry Miller away.

By now, it was noon—lunchtime.

After running around all morning, they were both starting to get hungry.

Cherry considered finding a place to grab a bite...

"Why don't you head home first?" Cherry asked Jay Kee.

"I'll go with you." Jay Kee mustered his courage. "You promised that today was all mine."

Cherry couldn't help but laugh.

When did she ever agree to that?

He really knew how to take advantage of a situation.

Fine, she might as well treat him to lunch.

Without another word, Cherry drove Jay Kee to a luxury restaurant downtown.

What Cherry didn't notice was that a motorcycle was following them at a discreet distance.

Once they entered the restaurant, the motorcycle stopped too.

On the motorcycle were the same guy who'd invited Jay Kee to lunch earlier—and Jenna Kim, who'd confronted Cherry in the restroom.

"Wow! This restaurant is so expensive!" Jenna Kim looked at the glittering sign, clearly upset. "Sean, that woman is only attractive because she's rich! That's the only reason Jay Kee likes her!"

"I think there's more to her than just money," Sean Kim replied. "If Jay Kee doesn't like you, maybe you should let it go."

Jenna Kim's eyes turned red. "Sean! Why are you taking her side? Just because I'm poor? But my feelings for Jay Kee are the most genuine!"

Sean Kim squeezed his wallet, which held the pay he'd just received yesterday. He gritted his teeth and said, "Fine, I'll treat you to something nice today! Let's go in and hear what they're saying!"

"Sean, you're the best!" Jenna finally smiled and linked arms with him as they walked in.

As soon as they entered the restaurant, the waiter seemed surprised—clearly not expecting guests quite so... unique.

But the waiter quickly recovered and greeted them, "Do you have a reservation?"

"No," Sean replied.

"This way, please," the waiter said, leading Sean and Jenna inside.

Sean and Jenna glanced around, both feeling a little out of place.

It was their first time in such an expensive restaurant.

When they sat down and opened the menu, Sean felt like his wallet was crying.

Oh my god, the dishes here are really expensive!

Even the cheapest dish—stir-fried shredded potatoes—cost 88 yuan!

They're robbing us!

How much does a kilo of potatoes even cost?

They flipped through the whole menu—only the shredded potatoes were under a hundred yuan; everything else was triple digits.

Sean and Jenna both wanted to bolt for the door!

Way too expensive!

"We're really not that hungry," Sean said through gritted teeth. "Just bring us two juices."

Even a single juice was 58 yuan!

Just over a hundred bucks—still affordable!

"Alright." The server didn’t say much, just nodded and left.

At the next table, Cherry Miller ordered a whole spread—over two grand in total.

"You’ve been running around all morning. Eat up." Cherry said to Jay Kee. "I need to swing by the office this afternoon, so you can head home first."

"Okay." Jay’s face flashed a hint of annoyance, but he quickly buried it, distracted by the delicious food in front of him.

Rich people, huh!

A casual lunch and it’s several thousand yuan.

That’s as much as his monthly rent!

That’s the gap between them!

Cherry took a few bites, then noticed Jay hadn’t touched his chopsticks. She asked, puzzled, "Why aren’t you eating?"

"I’m eating, I’m eating." Jay said, pretending to be casual. "Do you always live this well?"

Cherry chuckled, answering offhandedly, "Most days I eat at work since I’m busy. When I do go out, it’s usually for business meals, and the company picks up the tab."

Jay felt even more envious!

Reimbursed meals!

"But you still eat pretty well, right?" Jay asked.

"It’s alright," Cherry replied coolly.

The Yin family’s work meals really were excellent—nutritious and high-quality.

Cherry ate quickly and soon finished. She dabbed her mouth with a napkin and said, "I’ve already paid. Take your time."

With that, Cherry got up to leave.

"You’re leaving already?" Jay looked reluctant to see her go.

"Bye." Cherry left without a second thought.

At the next table, Jenna Kim fumed, "Sean, did you see her attitude? Jay’s so nice to her and she’s just cold!"

Sean Kim shook his head helplessly. "Isn’t this what you wanted? Or do you wish that woman was sweet to Jay?"

"I..." Jenna huffed and turned away.

Sean got up and sat down across from Jay, eyeing the table full of leftovers and nearly drooling.

No way he could afford this!

One meal cost as much as a month’s rent!

He couldn’t bear it!

"Sean? What are you doing?" Jay turned to see Jenna, and his face instantly darkened.

"You guys followed me?" Jay was annoyed.

"Jay, we’ve been friends for years, but that woman..." Sean sighed. "You two are from different worlds. There’s no future for you."

"That’s my business, not yours." Jay’s face fell. "Sean, we may be friends, but you don’t get to boss me around about my life."

Before Sean could reply, Jenna rushed over and shouted, "Jay, do you like that woman?"

"Yes!" Jay admitted bluntly.

"How could you do this to me!" Jenna covered her mouth, crying as she ran out.

Sean looked at Jay helplessly. "You’ll regret this!"

With that, Sean ran after Jenna.

Jay was left upset and couldn’t eat another bite.

He’d always known Jenna liked him, but he never took it seriously.

If he hadn’t met Cherry, he might’ve just played around with Jenna.

But now that he had a sponsor, he couldn’t afford to be indecisive or upset his sponsor.

Jenna didn’t have money or power—what could she offer him?

He didn’t want to waste his youth!

Jay stood up, frustrated, and prepared to leave.

"Sir, your friends haven’t paid yet." The server stopped Jay and handed him the bill for double the drinks.

Jay looked at the bill and got even more annoyed!

Now he had to pay for those two as well!

"Pack up the leftovers!" Jay said, feeling the pain. Since he had to pay, he might as well take the food to go and minimize his losses!
