Because I am me!
Evan Lin's tone was calm, his expression cold. As soon as he spoke, the contempt in everyone's eyes vanished completely.
This was a teenager who could summon Sawyer Summer with a single phone call!
"What on earth is going on here?" Neil Kong muttered to himself, looking at Sharon Chen beside him, completely unable to figure out the situation.
"Joy! Please ask your son to plead for my husband Dewang! He's worked at Summer Corporation for so many years—he can't just lose his job like this!" Sharon Xiao snapped back to reality, her face full of grievance. Knowing Evan Lin was no use, she turned and hurried toward Joy Zheng.
Sharon Xiao rushed up to Joy Zheng, grabbing her hand, her face full of desperation and anxiety, her eyes already red. "Joy! Your son is amazing—he can reach Sawyer Summer and get Chairman Summer to fire my Dewang with a single call. He can definitely make another call to get Dewang's job back!"
"I'm begging you!"
As she spoke, Sharon couldn't help but choke up. Dressed in designer brands, she'd never had to beg anyone like this since marrying Dewang Zhang.
Normally, during holidays or festivals, Dewang Zhang's subordinates would visit with all kinds of gifts, begging her and Dewang for a little help at work.
Today, Sharon Xiao came with Dewang Zhang precisely to help humiliate Joy Zheng in front of Neil Kong, hoping to win Neil's favor and ask him to help Dewang advance further in his career.
But now, all their attempts to humiliate Joy Zheng have backfired one after another. Instead of winning Neil Kong's favor, they've only made him lose face repeatedly. And now, thanks to a single call from Evan Lin, Dewang Zhang's golden rice bowl has been smashed to pieces.
Sharon Xiao was in total panic now, crying and begging Joy Zheng: "Joy, for the sake of our old dorm friendship, please ask your son to help us!"
"I was wrong, I really was! I shouldn't have targeted you from the start. I used to be jealous of you, and when I heard your life wasn't going well, I actually felt happy deep down. I don't even know why I thought that way! I was truly wrong!" Sharon sobbed and shouted.
She looked at Joy Zheng in front of her, and couldn't muster any other thoughts now.
If Dewang Zhang lost his job—and was fired directly by Sawyer Summer—once word got out, all the connections and relationships he'd built up over the years would collapse instantly.
Even if Neil Kong was willing to invite Dewang Zhang to his company, ninety-nine percent it would just be a meaningless position. Without his network and resources, and having offended Sawyer Summer, it would be a devastating blow for Dewang.
"This..." Joy Zheng looked at Sharon Xiao's tearful face, a bit hesitant and unable to bear it.
Lucy Lu beside her also felt a bit sorry for Sharon, but remembering Sharon's earlier actions, Lucy couldn't help but feel a little satisfied inside.
Still, despite everything, Joy Zheng turned to Evan Lin: "Evan..."
She was about to plead for Sharon Xiao.
A glimmer of hope flashed across Sharon Xiao and Dewang Zhang's faces as they looked toward Evan Lin.
"Mom, that company's not mine. If he wants his job back, he can go talk to Sawyer Summer himself. I'm not some saint—I only handle the killing, not the cleanup. I even asked him if he believed I could get him fired with a single call; if he'd believed me, I wouldn't have made the call. But he didn't, so I had to prove it." Evan Lin replied coolly.
After Evan finished speaking, Sharon Xiao's face turned completely dark, Dewang Zhang looked utterly defeated, and Zhang Yi nearly lost her balance.
Everyone around looked at Evan Lin, realizing they couldn't use normal logic to figure out how this kid thinks.
Dewang Zhang looked helplessly toward Neil Kong for help, but Neil and Sharon Chen both looked conflicted and suspicious.
They couldn't figure out how Evan Lin could possibly have connections to people like Sawyer Summer and Summer Mu. Even Neil Kong wasn't qualified to carry Sawyer's shoes.
"Sharon, there's nothing more we can do. Evan said it himself—the company isn't his. Maybe he can help fire someone, but getting them rehired depends on the boss." Lucy Lu said to Sharon, but even she felt something was off.
Not just off—very off.
The fact that Evan Lin could get both Dewang Zhang and Kevin Shao fired with a single phone call was seriously strange.
"Evan, what's your relationship with Sawyer Summer, anyway? Why does he listen to you so much?" Joy Zheng finally couldn't help but ask.
As soon as she asked, everyone turned to Evan Lin, waiting for his answer.
There was still a trace of worry in Joy Zheng's eyes.
All these years, Joy Zheng had always seen Evan as a mediocre student, but gentle and obedient.
But ever since Evan started school in Minghai, he'd changed more and more.
The most unbelievable part: how could a student like Evan Lin be connected to River City's richest man, Sawyer Summer?
The only possibility Joy could think of was one she didn't want to face—she was afraid those people would suddenly show up and take Evan away.
Power and status can completely consume a person.
"Doctor-patient relationship. When I went to River City for the Provincial Math Olympiad, Sawyer Summer happened to fall ill. I know his son Summer Mu, so I helped treat him. Sawyer promised to grant me one favor." Evan Lin made up a story.
But everything he said was also true.
He really did save Sawyer Summer's life in River City, but what Sawyer promised was basically half the Summer family's assets. That was too much to mention—no need to cause extra trouble.
"You saved his life?" Joy Zheng was stunned.
Lucy Lu suddenly remembered something, her eyes lighting up with a smile. "That's right! Evan learned a lot of medicine from an old Chinese doctor—he even saved Haiyang Sheng before!"
As soon as Lucy spoke, Joy Zheng immediately recalled the money Evan said he'd earned treating patients. Hearing Lucy's words, Joy finally put it all together and felt relieved.
Since it was all earned by treating people, it meant Evan wasn't tangled up with those people after all.
Thinking of this, Joy Zheng felt much more at ease.
Meanwhile, Neil Kong finally understood what was going on. He raised an eyebrow, his gaze toward Evan Lin suddenly darkening, his tone mocking: "So you saved his life and got a promise in return, huh?"
"Hmm?" Evan turned and looked at Neil Kong.
Neil Kong stared at Evan, full of disdain. "I thought you were something special, but you just learned a bit of medicine, that's all!"
"Sawyer Summer is big on keeping his word. So he promised you one thing, and that's how you got him to fire Dewang Zhang. But now that promise is spent, you have no more connection to him—you're just a poor student again, aren't you?" Neil said, his words dripping with contempt.
Hearing Neil's words, Sharon Xiao and Dewang Zhang immediately snapped out of it and started yelling at Evan Lin: "You little bastard! Are you out to get us? What's with all that 'because I am me' nonsense? Are you stupid? You had such a great chance to secure your own future, and you wasted it just to dig a hole for Dewang!"
"You're the kind of guy who hurts others without helping himself! You'll get what's coming to you!"
Sharon Xiao was furious.
Now that Neil Kong had explained things, Sharon realized Evan Lin was no longer connected to Sawyer Summer. Without that connection, what was there to fear?
Kevin Shao glared angrily. "A punk like you, so ruthless at such a young age? Do you know how much money your words cost me?"
For a moment, everyone looked at Evan Lin like he was an idiot.
"Such a good opportunity, and you didn't even ask for tens of millions of yuan. Instead, you wasted it just to mess with Dewang Zhang. What were you thinking?" Stella Cui frowned at Evan.
"It's a shame—even if you didn't use that promise yourself, you could've sold it for a fortune. Are you brain-damaged or something?" Someone chimed in.
"He's the perfect example of someone who treats gold like dirt. Some people are so poor, they wouldn't know what to do with money even if you gave it to them." Sharon Chen sneered.
Countless eyes focused on Evan Lin, standing off to the side.
"Dewang! Don't worry about your job—I've got you covered! Work for me and I'll guarantee you make more than you ever did before!" Neil Kong boasted, looking at Dewang Zhang.
Since it was clear Sawyer Summer fired Dewang Zhang only because of a promise—and not because Dewang had offended him—Dewang's connections were still useful.
"Thank you, Mr. Kong!" Dewang Zhang and Sharon Xiao were overjoyed.
Ren Chen curled his lip at Evan Lin with disdain. "Idiot."
Joy Zheng hadn't expected her question to stir up so much controversy. She looked at Evan Lin with an apologetic gaze; Evan shook his head slightly, just about to say something.
Just then, Neil Kong's smiling face suddenly turned serious, and he quickly strode off to the side.
Everyone's attention shifted with Neil Kong's movement, and they saw a man in a suit emerging from Villa No. 3.
The man looked cold and tough, wearing sunglasses, his whole demeanor exuding steely resolve.
It was Blade!
Su Yuantian's personal bodyguard!
