Chapter 408: Impossible

He had no other choice but to act this way; Alaric had always been arrogant in the Apocalypse Mercenary Company, respecting no one but the captain. He couldn’t just stand by and watch Alaric recklessly provoke the terrifying figure who killed the Wyvern King in three seconds...

After speaking, he ignored Alaric’s feelings, pulling him back while forcing a smile: "Archmage Merlin, it’s all a misunderstanding... We’ll leave now and won’t disturb your rest."

"Alaric, do you even know what you’re doing? Do you think you can provoke Matthew Merlin? Are you trying to get yourself killed? If you anger him, our entire Apocalypse Mercenary Company will suffer!"

Dalson's furious voice echoed through the empty barracks.

Others didn’t know how the Wyvern King died, but Dalson knew perfectly well. Not only that, he had witnessed that terrifying scene with his own eyes.

These past few days, Alaric had been running around for the Wyvern King's Blood, and Dalson had noticed it all along. But so what? The Wyvern King's Blood was already in the hands of that terrifying young archmage. Dalson knew he wasn’t capable of taking it back.

So all this time, Dalson had turned a blind eye to Alaric’s actions, letting him vent his anger as he pleased.

After all, that was just Alaric’s personality. Once he finished venting, he would naturally calm down...

As for that terrifying young archmage...

Dalson had only met him once and didn’t even know who he was, nor did he think they’d ever cross paths again...

Dalson thought that in the end, this matter would just quietly fade away...

But unexpectedly, during a battle a few days ago, Dalson suddenly discovered that the terrifying young archmage had appeared again. This realization made Dalson vigilant, as he realized that the terrifying young archmage might be hiding among the Three Major Mercenary Companies. If he happened to run into Alaric, the two might clash over the Wyvern King's blood...

This was no joke...

Although Alaric was a Title Archmage, getting into a conflict with a monster that could kill the Wyvern King in three seconds was basically asking for death...

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Dalson didn’t hesitate any longer and decided to tell Alaric the truth.

It turned out that Alaric had already run over to the Templar Knights Mercenary Company, and when the anxious Dalson arrived, he saw Alaric being thrown out of the tent...

At that moment, Dalson was truly scared stiff...

This was courting death...

That was a monster that killed the Wyvern King in three seconds, and you, Alaric, are just a second-tier Title Archmage—do you have a death wish or something?

Thank goodness, thank goodness...

Luckily, he was quick-witted and managed to pull Alaric back before things got completely out of hand...

"Dalson, are you kidding me? He’s just a second-tier archmage, why can’t I go after him? Besides, he stole the Wyvern King's Blood I needed most, and he even used it up. How could I just let that go?"

"I’m warning you, Dalson—don’t think you can boss me around just because you’re the First Vice Captain. Matthew Merlin, I will kill him no matter what..."

After being thrown out of the barracks by a low-tier archmage and having his plans ruined by Dalson, Alaric was fuming.

"Kill Matthew Merlin? Ridiculous. Tell me, Alaric, what exactly are you going to use to kill Matthew Merlin?" Dalson glared at Alaric, sneering coldly.

"Dalson, are you joking with me? I’m a dignified Title Archmage—how could I possibly fail to kill a second-tier archmage?" Alaric’s face darkened; he felt insulted.

"Then why were you thrown out?"

"I was just careless... And Matthew Merlin ambushed me despicably. If you hadn’t stopped me just now, that high-tier spell would have killed him for sure!"

"Ridiculous, Alaric. If I told you the one who killed the Wyvern King was none other than that young mage Matthew Merlin, would you still think that?"

"What!"

Alaric's eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at Dalson.

As evening fell, Alaric wandered out of Dalson's barracks, dazed and lost. He didn’t even know how he felt—shocked, ashamed, and above all, terrified.

Dalson recounted the events of that night, and only then did Alaric realize how fierce the battle had been. Even when the vice captains of the Three Major Mercenary Companies joined forces, they couldn’t kill the Wyvern King and nearly faced annihilation... But the young mage Matthew Merlin’s appearance completely turned the tide. In just a few seconds, he slew the Wyvern King, not only saving Dalson’s life but also helping the Three Major Mercenary Companies enormously.

Now Alaric finally understood how foolish he’d been—not only forcing someone to hand over the Wyvern King's Blood, but also plotting to kill them.

Thank goodness, thank goodness...

Thank goodness Dalson showed up.

If Dalson hadn’t arrived in time to stop him, he would have definitely enraged Matthew Merlin. The outcome of provoking someone like that was obvious—the next corpse would be his own...

Just thinking about it made him shudder; after all, nobody wants their life to be cut short.

Before heading to the Turin Mountains, the captain had ordered him to obey Dalson’s commands. At the time, Alaric had been annoyed—why should he listen to Dalson just because he was a bit stronger? Dissatisfied, Alaric spent the whole journey mocking Dalson with sarcasm...

Thinking back now, he really owed Dalson an apology. Just look at Dalson's magnanimity, never holding a grudge, and then look at himself...

"Teacher, congratulations on getting the Wyvern King's Blood..." Orson spotted his teacher Alaric from a distance and rushed over, his face full of joy. "You must have taught that damn Matthew Merlin a lesson, right? Of course—he didn’t know his place, stealing the Wyvern King's Blood that belonged to you. He deserved a good beating..."

Orson never doubted anything. In his eyes, his teacher was a dignified Title Archmage, and dealing with someone like Matthew Merlin should have been effortless...

Matthew Merlin must have been scared out of his wits...

Maybe he’d already been driven out by the Templar Knights Mercenary Company.

Either way, he definitely wouldn’t have ended up well—even if he survived, he’d be lucky to escape with his skin intact.

Smack!

A crisp sound rang out, followed by Alaric’s gloomy voice: "Shut up!"

Originally, Alaric was quite satisfied with his disciple Orson. His magical talent was exceptional—calling him a genius was no exaggeration. Not yet thirty, he was already a fifth-tier archmage, the perfect candidate to inherit Alaric’s mantle.

But now, Alaric suddenly found his disciple increasingly annoying... Especially that cheerful face, which only made Alaric, already angry, even angrier.

That’s why he slapped him.

"T-Teacher..." Orson clutched his cheek, staring at Alaric in disbelief. Was this still the teacher who had always doted on him? How could he hit him out of nowhere...

"What else do you have to say?" Alaric’s face was gloomy, his voice chillingly sinister.

It was all because of this clueless disciple that he’d ended up in such a mess!

And he even claimed he’d saved Matthew Merlin’s life at the Doomscar—ridiculous! With Matthew Merlin’s terrifying strength, killing the Wyvern King in seconds, would he ever need your help? Damn it, do you think you’re Sky Rank or something...

After learning the truth, Alaric realized that none of Orson’s claims were true. The more he thought about it, the angrier he got; he almost wanted to slap Orson again, to finally knock some sense into him. Matthew Merlin isn’t someone you can afford to offend—even Dalson treats him with utmost respect, and as for me, your teacher...

He raised his hand, but ultimately let it fall, sighing deeply. Seeing Orson still looking bewildered, he coldly said, "Orson, think carefully about what happened after you met Matthew Merlin. Do you really believe he’s just a second-tier archmage?"

"Uh... Teacher, what do you mean by that?" Seeing his teacher raise his hand again, Orson was startled, but didn’t dare dodge. He stood there trembling, only to hear his teacher say something utterly baffling: "Matthew Merlin is indeed just a second-tier archmage. If the few Merlin Family members hadn’t been present that night, I’d have dealt with him myself... Hmph, that reckless fool even dared to steal—"

"Enough!" Alaric interrupted sternly, glaring at Orson with bitter disappointment. "You really are an idiot. That level thirty-five Wyvern King was killed by Matthew Merlin himself. I know exactly how capable you are—dealing with Matthew Merlin? What a joke... You’ve provoked Matthew Merlin so many times, and the fact that you’re still alive is a miracle in itself."

"That’s impossible!" Orson screamed. How could it be? How could a second-tier archmage possibly kill the Wyvern King—a level thirty-five creature, whose strength rivaled that of fifth-tier and above Title Archmages? Someone like that, facing a second-tier archmage, could blow him away with a breath!

"Heh, impossible?" Alaric sneered coldly. "Dalson saw it with his own eyes..."

"D-Dalson?" Orson was dumbfounded.

As the First Vice Captain of the Apocalypse Mercenary Company, Dalson usually handled all daily affairs on behalf of the captain. His prestige in the Apocalypse Mercenary Company was second only to the captain himself. Even Orson would never doubt a word Dalson said. Hearing Alaric mention that name, Orson’s legs instantly went weak, and he nearly collapsed on the spot...

"That Wyvern King... the Wyvern King was killed by Matthew Merlin?"

How could that be...

That was a level thirty-five monster, far stronger than his teacher, and yet Matthew Merlin killed it...

And here he was, still thinking he’d once saved Matthew Merlin’s life...

The level twenty-five Forest Black Python probably wouldn’t even merit a second glance from someone like him... Let alone the magical materials from its body—what Orson considered treasures, Matthew Merlin might not even value as much as cabbage.

And yet, he’d foolishly gone to Captain Anli, trying to get Matthew Merlin expelled from the Apocalypse Mercenary Company camp...
