The Child Hanging by a Thread
Quentin Lin carried the baby straight into the next room, which had been prepared in advance. Inside, Simon Yu was already waiting.
Su Li forced herself to sit upright, watching as Quentin Lin took the child away. Tears streamed down her face. "Heavens, please protect my child! If my son survives this ordeal, I’m willing to give up twenty years of my life!"
"Su Li, don’t say such things! Both you and the baby will be safe and live long lives!" Alexander Hayes quickly covered Su Li’s mouth, his heart aching with worry.
Alexander Hayes helped Su Li lie down. Though she was weak, sleep wouldn’t come; her mind was consumed by worry for her child.
Alexander Hayes watched Su Li, utterly exhausted after childbirth. She was so weak and still worried about the child, he truly feared she might not be able to hold on.
Alexander quietly called Dr. Rowan Lin over and said in a low voice, "Father, the blood replacement will take at least all night. Su Li is so anxious and sleepless, I'm afraid her body can't take it. Is there a way to help her rest for a while without harming her health?"
Dr. Rowan Lin turned to look at Su Li.
At this moment, Wang Shi was feeding Su Li some stewed black-bone chicken soup.
But Su Li clearly had no appetite and kept glancing toward the baby’s room.
Dr. Rowan Lin sighed. Parents’ hearts are always full of worry. With the child’s life hanging by a thread, it’s no wonder the mother can’t eat or sleep. But Su Li’s body was too weak to endure much more. After a moment’s thought, Dr. Rowan Lin said, "Once Su Li finishes eating, I’ll give her a few acupuncture points to help her sleep."
"Thank you, Father-in-law," Alexander Hayes said politely.
Dr. Rowan Lin escorted Margaret Evans to the private suite next door to rest, then went to another suite to check on Quentin Lin’s progress with the blood replacement treatment—a rare and dangerous medical procedure in this era, where a patient’s blood is gradually exchanged to save their life.
Meanwhile, inside the room, Alexander Hayes sat by the bedside, his beard unkempt, eyes glued to Lily Evans. Seeing her so fragile, he was haunted by the fear that she might truly leave him behind.
"Good. Lily’s finished eating, so I’ll give her acupuncture now." Dr. Rowan Lin saw Margaret Evans had fed Lily a bowl of black-bone chicken soup, then went over and applied acupuncture to several points. Lily’s head lolled to the side and she drifted into a deep sleep.
Even asleep, Lily’s face was still marked by worry.
Margaret Evans’s heart ached to see her daughter like this.
Dr. Rowan Lin helped Margaret Evans out of the room. She’d been sitting so long her legs were numb, and she could barely stand, relying on Dr. Rowan Lin for support.
"Maggie, go get some rest. Alexander is here to watch over Lily," Dr. Rowan Lin said gently, caring for both his daughter and his wife.
Margaret Evans shook her head. "With Lily like this, how can I possibly relax?"
Dr. Rowan Lin insisted, "Maggie, just go sleep for a while in the private suite next door. Alexander will watch Lily, and I’ll be right outside. With us here, what do you have to worry about? Besides, Lily will need you to care for her during her confinement. If you wear yourself out now, who will look after her then?"
Margaret Evans thought it over and realized he was right. Lily was asleep, and she couldn’t do much here anyway. Better to rest and gather her strength to care for her daughter during her confinement.
Dr. Rowan Lin escorted Margaret Evans to the private suite next door to rest, then went to another suite to check on Quentin Lin’s blood transfusion treatment.
Meanwhile, inside the room, Alexander Hayes sat by the bedside, his beard unkempt, eyes never leaving Lily Evans. Seeing her so fragile, he feared she might truly leave him.
