A Lesson in Pain

Mrs. Penny smiled gracefully, completely unfazed, and seeing Sophie White so flustered only made her feel more at ease.

Who was Mrs. Penny, after all? She was a masterful enchantress, while Sophie White—raised among men in the barracks—was still far too inexperienced in comparison.

Mrs. Penny blinked and, without the slightest hesitation, lied smoothly: "Miss White, the pus from your wound is inside, you can't see it from your angle. But I can see it perfectly—there's plenty of pus in there! Miss White, I think you're just afraid of pain, aren't you? Well, there's nothing to be done. If you can't even handle squeezing out the pus, just wait until it's time to clean the wound and cut away the rotten flesh with a knife, slice by slice. How will you bear it then?"

Sophie White was so furious at Mrs. Penny’s words that she nearly fainted.

She’d been careful to protect her wound all along, precisely to avoid suffering more than necessary. So Sophie White knew perfectly well—there was no pus, no rotten flesh, nothing like that on her wound!

This woman called Mrs. Penny was obviously using the excuse of treating her wound to deliberately torment her!

Just thinking about how painful it was to squeeze out the pus now, Sophie White shuddered at what Mrs. Penny might do next under the pretense of cutting away rotten flesh.

Suddenly, Sophie White grabbed Mrs. Penny’s wrist and whispered, "I have no grudge against you—why are you treating me like this? Or is it because I didn’t tip you, so you’re purposely making me suffer?"

Tip money? Mrs. Penny covered her mouth and laughed—Sophie White really thought she was just an ordinary maid in the Prince’s Manor.

Mrs. Penny was once a senior member of the Hayes Family Shadow Guard, and now she was Su Li’s trusted right hand, managing the entire intelligence network in the capital—how could she possibly be short on silver?

Mrs. Penny brushed Sophie White’s hand aside and said, "Miss White, what are you talking about? I truly don’t understand. I have no grudge against you, so why would I torment you? Besides, His Highness asked me to treat your wound—how could I possibly make things difficult for you?"

As Mrs. Penny spoke, she pressed down even harder, suddenly applying force to Sophie White’s wound. The pain made Sophie White yelp uncontrollably, "Your Highness, please—save me!"

But Mrs. Penny immediately chimed in, "Miss White, oh, young ladies are always so delicate—they just can’t handle pain. But if this wound isn’t cleaned properly, you’ll be the one to suffer later! If it hurts too much, just go ahead and curse me, I promise I won’t take it to heart. As long as it makes you feel better and eases your pain, that’s all that matters."

Mrs. Penny’s words left Sophie White completely speechless. It was as if cursing Mrs. Penny was now her only way to cope with the pain!

Alexander Hayes, who was listening outside, frowned and said, "Sophie, treating a wound is always painful. Try to bear it."

No sooner had Alexander Hayes finished speaking than Mrs. Penny gave another hard squeeze. Sophie White’s face went pale as she cried out in pain.

After that, the shouts inside rose and fell in waves. Sophie White’s wails were mixed with Mrs. Penny’s childlike coaxing: "Don’t be afraid of the pain, just a little more and it’ll be clean," "Miss White, hang in there—if you really can’t stand it, just curse me."

Dr. Rowan Lin stood solemnly at the doorway, but inside he was struggling not to laugh. He thought to himself, this Miss White really is unlucky—she’s barely arrived and already landed in Mrs. Penny’s hands.

Not only was Mrs. Penny highly skilled and quick-witted, but her loyalty belonged to Lily Evans alone.

Earlier, right in front of Mrs. Penny, Sophie White had acted coy with Alexander Hayes—her intentions were obvious, and someone as sharp as Mrs. Penny could see right through her.

So, Mrs. Penny decided to take matters into her own hands and teach Sophie White a lesson.
