Killing the Snake

2/14/2026

"Quit your screaming! What, never seen someone wrangle a snake before?" Serena Feng snapped, her voice sharp and venomous.

As a surgeon, her hands were exceptionally sensitive and precious—she valued them more than her own life. Normally, she would never allow her hands to suffer even the slightest injury; even a small scrape would warrant an X-ray, just in case of infection.

She would never have grabbed the snake with her bare hands if she had any other choice.

She wasn’t afraid of snakes, but she hated their cold-blooded nature—the feeling of one squirming in her hand was even more revolting than touching a corpse.

She wasn’t afraid of snakes, but she hated their cold-blooded nature—the feeling of one in her hand was more revolting than touching a corpse.

And when it came to things she hated, she preferred to deal with them quickly.

Her right hand gripped the snake at its seven-inch point, while her left picked up a small dagger. Under the crowd’s stunned gaze, she deftly plunged the blade into the snake’s belly.

With a swift slash, the snake’s belly split open, and Serena Feng deftly extracted its gallbladder.

From start to finish, her hands never trembled, her eyes never blinked—she was more skilled than any snake-catcher.

"Smack!"

Serena Feng tossed the dead snake back into the bamboo basket.

"Down the hatch." Serena Feng shoved the snake gall right up to the boy’s lips, like she was tossing him a snack.

"Down the hatch." Serena Feng shoved the snake gall right up to the boy’s lips, casual as tossing him a snack.

"Why are you just standing there? Don’t want to live? If you’d said so earlier, I wouldn’t have bothered saving you." Serena shoved the gallbladder closer, her eyes telling him to hurry up.

"Why are you just standing there? Don’t want to live? If you’d said so earlier, I wouldn’t have bothered saving you." Serena shoved the gallbladder closer, her eyes signaling him to hurry up.

Her patience was limited; this boy was lucky she happened to be passing by, or he’d already be dead.

"Uh, uh..." The boy still looked dazed, but under Serena Feng’s threat, he instinctively opened his mouth.

"Don’t bite it—just swallow it whole. If you die, I’m not responsible."

Serena Feng roughly shoved the gallbladder into the boy’s mouth. Ignoring the stares from the crowd, she pulled a white handkerchief from her chest, carefully wiped the blood off her dagger and surgical blade, and stowed them back in their custom sheath at her calf.

Her every movement was smooth and efficient. By the time the onlookers snapped out of their shock, Serena was already leisurely wiping the blood from her ten fingers with the handkerchief...

Her movements were elegant and refined, showing not a trace of bloodiness or vulgarity.

Hmm... Someone nearly gagged, but when Serena Feng shot them a glare, they swallowed it back down.

What a terrifying woman.

"Is there any water? Bring me a basin—I need to wash my hands." Serena Feng spoke naturally, with no sign of a fallen noblewoman’s insecurity.

It wasn’t the commanding tone of someone above others, but it carried a compelling charisma that made people want to obey.

"Yes, yes!" One of the yamen runners, finally recovering from his shock, hurried off to fetch water for Serena Feng, not the least bit displeased.

When the water arrived, the runner didn’t set it on the ground, but instead presented the basin with both hands directly to Serena Feng, making it easy for her to wash up. He did it naturally, without a hint of reluctance.

It was as if serving Serena Feng was something to be proud of.

In fact, among the crowd, quite a few people wanted to snatch that runner’s job.

To be able to observe this snake-catching, snake-killing young woman up close—what a rare opportunity.

After washing her hands, Serena Feng tossed the blood-stained handkerchief into the basin as well.

"Dispose of it properly—there might be poison." She ordered again, not bothering with courtesy.

"Yes, yes." The runner didn’t mind at all.

In fact, he was already half scared to death by Serena Feng.

What kind of woman was this?

She could just casually pull out a handful of knives from her person.

She caught and killed a snake without blinking, looking fiercer than most men.

It wasn’t just these two runners who were shocked.

Prince Terrence Valen’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. Even the black-clad, silver-masked man standing far away was so transfixed he didn’t blink; when Prince Terrence left, he didn’t even notice...

Once everything was cleaned up, Serena Feng didn’t linger. As for being stared at by crowds, she figured once you’ve experienced it a few times, you just get used to it.

Looking at the boy still sitting dazed on the ground, Serena Feng recalled a detail she’d caught earlier—a secret that piqued her interest.

It seemed this boy wasn’t an ordinary person. After a quick thought, Serena Feng decided to go the extra mile.

"Go find a doctor and get a prescription to clear out any remaining poison. As for that snake—have it sent to Feng Manor later. I’m having snake soup for dinner. Here’s money for the snake."

Serena Feng took out a tael of silver and pressed it into the boy’s hand.

Then, waving to the crowd blocking her path, she said, "Alright, the show’s over. Everyone can go now."

"Oh, oh..."

The crowd immediately parted, stepping aside to open a path for Serena Feng.

Serena Feng didn’t stand on ceremony; she called to the two runners, signaling them to lead the way. As for saving someone, she didn’t give it a second thought.

Serena Feng would never admit it.

She’d only helped because her hands itched for action, and later, realizing the boy was unusual, she started craving that delicious snake meat.

The Feng clan was so poor—she hadn’t tasted meat in days.

Tonight, she could finally eat something decent...

After Serena Feng left, the crowd finally snapped out of it. "Who is that girl?"

"I think I heard her surname is Feng—Serena Feng."

"Serena Feng? Isn’t she the one who got into a fight at the city gate a few days ago?"

"Yeah, that’s right! I heard she was supposed to be a prince’s bride, but after the fight, she lost that position..."

"Really? What happened?"

"You know Gareth Yan—the one who bullies men and women in the capital? They say Miss Feng fought him at the city gate to teach him a lesson. She was alone and took down more than a dozen men."

"Really? Isn’t that a bit much?"

"Why would I lie? Did you see how she killed that snake? She’s not ordinary—she’s General Feng’s daughter. She can fight on the battlefield and grace the drawing room..."

"Makes sense!"

And so, another round of fresh rumors began spreading among the people.

Meanwhile, the boy lying on the ground was completely forgotten. No one noticed when he left—the crowd’s attention had shifted entirely to the legendary Miss Feng.

As for the legendary Miss Feng, she’d already put everything behind her, because she had arrived at the morgue...

If no one had led the way, Serena Feng was certain she’d never have found this place, nor imagined such a desolate corner existed within the imperial capital.

The runner leading the way had wanted to reassure Serena Feng not to be afraid—the corpses inside weren’t many, just a dozen or so waiting to be claimed...

But remembering how deftly Serena Feng had killed the snake and extracted its gall on the street, he swallowed his words.

He couldn’t help but wickedly wonder if he’d get to see Miss Feng embarrassed.

"Miss Feng, here we are." The two runners pointed to a gloomy little building ahead.

Four runners guarded the door to the little house. After checking their identities, they gave Serena Feng a once-over—half puzzled, half curious—before letting her in.

Serena Feng smiled and said nothing more.

The door creaked open, and a wave of putrid corpse fumes rushed out. Serena Feng instantly held her breath, instinctively reaching for a mask—only to realize...

This was ancient times—of course there wouldn’t be such a thing in a morgue.

But corpse fumes were toxic too! Breathing too much of it was bad for the body.

Serena Feng hesitated for a moment, and a flash of triumph appeared in the runner’s eyes behind her.

So she was still just a woman—who wouldn’t be timid facing corpses?

The two men stepped forward, smugly saying, "Miss Feng, please..."

They looked almost excited to see how things would unfold.

Serena Feng’s gaze turned cold; whatever goodwill she’d felt toward the runner dropped to zero.

How heartless—everyone who came here was a relative of the deceased. Watching these runners gloat, how could the bereaved stand it?

Serena Feng’s tone was curt: "Let’s go."
