Still Alive

The mortuary was spacious and bright, with two windows on each wall and a large vent on the roof. It looked simple, but everything was perfectly arranged.

Overall, the design of this mortuary was quite impressive. The lighting and ventilation were excellent, and the air inside was dry. Stepping in, there was none of that eerie feeling or the stench of decaying bodies.

Serena Feng nodded in satisfaction. These ancient people were far smarter than modern ones—just look at how they built this place.

There wasn’t a trace of modern technology here; everything relied on natural conditions, yet it was spotless and orderly.

As she walked into the mortuary and saw row upon row of corpses with horrific deaths, Serena Feng didn’t even frown.

She wasn’t some delicate flower raised in a greenhouse—she was a battlefield doctor who’d seen far worse than this.

She’d seen plenty of bodies—strange, misshapen, soaked in formalin—nothing here could faze her.

It couldn’t be helped—she had a senior who was a forensic specialist and always dragged her along to help out whenever he was free.

She’d spent more time with the wounded and the dead than most people ever would.

Silently, she bowed three times toward the corpses out of respect for the dead. Without needing the officials to guide her, Serena Feng found her maid’s body on her own.

The corpse was covered with a white cloth, only the back of the hand exposed. Bruises had appeared on the skin, and a small wound was turning pale, making the whole scene look both chilling and horrifying.

Serena Feng let out a quiet sigh. No matter how angry she’d been at this maid’s betrayal, now it was all gone.

The debts of the dead are cleared!

Why bother with a corpse? This little maid was just a pawn, used by someone else.

The ones who deserve to die are the people who used her!

"Did she leave any belongings?" Serena asked the official beside her.

She came to claim the body hoping to find some clues from this maid.

"No. When she was pulled out of the water... well, she didn’t have a single thing on her."

"She was assaulted?" Serena’s expression changed as she lifted the white cloth covering the body.

Serena took a deep breath.

Not a single part of her body was intact—bruises everywhere, men’s fingerprints all over her. Her lower half was even worse, clearly abused before death.

Judging by the marks, it was more than one man. Even though her face was swollen, you could still see the terror and pain she felt before dying.

Her eyes stared wide open, as if she couldn’t rest in peace.

Gang rape.

Too much. Just too much.

Serena clenched her fists, staring at Wendy Wan’s mangled corpse.

Was this a warning to her?

Was she supposed to end up like Wendy?

This kind of warning was just too cruel.

The official saw Serena lost in thought and thought she was scared. He quickly called out, "Miss Feng? Miss Feng?"

Serena snapped back to herself and quickly shook her head. "I’m fine."

As soon as she finished speaking, she started to walk out, but suddenly—whether from carelessness or something else—her legs buckled and she toppled toward the corpse lying next to Wendy.

"Ah—!"

Serena shrieked, trying to steady herself, but it was too late—she was already falling onto the body beside her!

Thud—a muffled sound as Serena sprawled forward, landing on a small, soft corpse.

Huh? Warm? The body was still warm? Serena lay there, unmoving, pressing her ear carefully to the chest.

It was faint, but there was a heartbeat.

Serena’s face lit up. She knew this person wasn’t dead.

She was about to activate the Smart Med-Pack on her left wrist to check out what was going on with this ‘corpse’ when the mortuary door suddenly swung open.

A nobleman entered, accompanied by an official.
