It Hurts Everywhere
Lily Evans slept soundly, and when she finally opened her eyes again, it was almost evening.
"You're awake, honey." Lucky's face was so close, magnified right in front of her. Only then did Lily realize she was clinging to him like a stubborn octopus. Remembering all his injuries, she quickly pulled back, worried. "Lucky, did I squish your wounds? If anything hurts, you have to tell me!"
Lucky scrunched up his face, looking utterly pitiful. He blinked and said, "Honey, I think you split open a few of my wounds again."
Lily's heart jumped into her throat. She threw off the covers and started fussing over Lucky's clothes to check. "Where does it hurt? Point to it for me!"
But Lucky wouldn't say exactly where it hurt. He just kept sucking in air through his teeth, moaning, "Everywhere hurts. Honey, can you check how my wounds are doing?"
Lily’s cheeks flushed a deep red, but she leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to Lucky’s face. "Alright, there you go. Does it still hurt?"
"Okay, I'll blow on it." Lily gently blew on his wounds through the gauze, coaxing him softly, "Does it still hurt?"
"This spot feels better, but that one still hurts." Lucky was extra whiny today, pointing to another injury.
Lily looked at his bruised and battered face, remembering how he’d risked his life in the mountains to save her. No matter how whiny he got, she’d put up with it!
"Honey, my face hurts too. Ouch—so much pain!" Lucky pointed at his face, whining loudly, and scooted closer. "Honey, if you give it a kiss, it'll get better."
Lily blushed fiercely, but still leaned over and gave him a kiss. "Alright, all better now, right?"
"There's still this spot," Lucky pointed to the split at the corner of his mouth, his eyes blinking like stars.
Lily looked at Lucky's innocent gaze. If it were any other man, she would've smacked him for acting so pitiful! But with Lucky, she believed him—her silly husband would never trick her.
She couldn’t help but laugh. "Lucky, you’re such a handful when you’re sick. Are you sure you’re not faking it just to get kisses?"
"No way! It really, really hurts!" Lucky insisted, shaking his head, his expression so earnest it was almost comical.
Lily rolled her eyes, but her heart was warm. She gently stroked his cheek and whispered, "I’ll take care of you, Lucky. I promise."
Lucky clung to her like a big puppy, refusing to let go. "Honey, don’t leave me. I want you right here with me."
Lily smiled and tucked him in, smoothing his hair. "Alright, I’ll stay. But you need to rest and heal up, okay?"
Lucky nodded so hard his hair flopped everywhere. "I’ll be good!"
She couldn’t help but laugh again. This silly man—always making her worry, always making her smile.
The sky outside their window was painted with the colors of sunset, and the little house felt warmer than ever.
Lily lay beside Lucky, watching the golden light dance across his face, her heart full of gratitude and love.
No matter how hard life got, as long as they had each other, everything would be okay.
