Especially Good at Acting Cute
Lily Evans's face instantly turned red with embarrassment. Kissing in front of Leonard Li? Wasn't that a bit too much?
Leonard Li coughed awkwardly, his face full of embarrassment. But Lucky was completely oblivious, blinking his innocent, watery eyes at Lily Evans. He looked as pitiful and aggrieved as could be, hugging Lily and whining, "Wife, I want a kiss..."
Lily rubbed her forehead. Why was Lucky so good at acting cute after waking up? Maybe it was because people get extra fragile when they're sick?
Lucky clung to Lily, begging for hugs and kisses, while Leonard Li watched with a twitching mouth, unable to get a word in. He finally said to Lily, "Lily, you and Lucky should rest well. I've sent the steward with lots of medicinal herbs. No need to thank me yet—just owe me one! When you recover, cook a meal for me yourself."
Lily laughed, "Sure, no problem. But it'll probably be a while before I'm fully recovered."
Getting Lily's promise put Leonard Li in a better mood. He smiled, "No rush, take your time to recover. The snow has blocked the roads and delayed our trade routes. I need to handle this with Mr. Yuan. I'll be in his room. If you need anything, just send someone to call me."
"Take care, Mr. Leonard!" Lucky shouted before Leonard Li had even stepped out.
Leonard Li's mouth twitched again as he lifted the curtain and left.
"Lucky!" Lily couldn't help but feel Lucky was acting a little strange today.
"Wife, I'm hungry." Lucky pouted and acted cute, and Lily's heart melted instantly.
Now that both of them were sick, the kitchen always had soft, easily digestible food ready.
After Lily woke up, she was mostly recovered, but Lucky was still badly injured, wrapped in bandages and unable to use chopsticks. He started acting cute and begged Lily to feed him, so she had to eat a bite herself and then feed Lucky a bite, just like feeding a little bird.
The snow kept falling even harder in the days that followed. Lily was still sick, so she simply hung a 'Closed' sign on the vegetarian restaurant, and the two of them stayed home to recover.
Word of Lily and Lucky's brush with death spread through the village. Most villagers were happy for Lily, but there were two families who couldn't stand her good luck—one of them was the Thompson family.
Mrs. Thompson was so angry she stomped her feet. "Why is that wretched Lily still alive! Heaven must be blind! Things would be so much better if those two were gone!"
Charlie Thompson was even more upset, throwing a tantrum at home: "I don't care! I want to be Lily's son! I want to eat well and live the good life!"
Mrs. Thompson quickly tried to comfort him, "Oh, my son, I want to find you a rich family too, but what can I do?"
Charlie pointed at Mrs. Thompson and scolded, "We're from the same village, but you're useless! It's all your fault we're stuck in this drafty shack eating coarse food. Look at Lily's house—big brick walls, servants, feasts every day! And you—you're just a servant in Lily's house. How unlucky am I to be your son!"
The more Charlie thought about it, the angrier he got, causing another uproar at home. He blamed everything on Jill Evans for making him miss the chance to be Mrs. Wang's adopted son, and grew even more resentful of her.
Meanwhile, in another corner, was the Evans family.
Grandma Evans was so angry she couldn’t eat, cursing heaven for being blind. Helen Parker secretly braved the wind and snow and slipped out to a broken cave at the edge of the village.
"May, May! Lily didn’t die—what do we do now?" Helen was frantic, running around like a headless chicken. "That wretched Lily is so tough. If she finds out you pushed her into the river, she’ll definitely come after you!"
