Cynthia Wu Is Getting Married
David Evans saw his wife, Mrs. Zhao, being bullied and angrily stepped in to block Lila Green.
Lila Green rolled her eyes at David Evans, then deliberately rubbed up against him, making David Evans jump back in fright.
Lila Green sneered, "Oh, Father-in-law, don't block my way for no reason. If people start talking about a daughter-in-law and her father-in-law getting too close, I don't care, but your son does have a reputation to protect. Tsk, don't say I didn't warn you—best if a father-in-law keeps out of his daughter-in-law's bedroom matters."
"You... You have no shame!" David Evans clutched his hair in despair as he watched Lila Green swagger away. "Our Evans Family must be cursed—how did we end up with such a woman!"
After Lila Green left, Dr. Wu prescribed medicine for Mrs. Zhao, and the Evans Family carried her home in tears and wails.
From that day on, Arthur Evans's marriage became the village's biggest joke. Everywhere people gossiped about the Evans Family, and their reputation hit rock bottom. Even Arthur Evans moved into Green Seed Academy and refused to come home, just to avoid being mocked as a 'green turtle' by the village rascals.
Soon, it was Cynthia Wu's wedding day. Much of her dowry was secretly purchased with silver Mark Hunter gave Dr. Wu before the wedding, and with the extra gifts from Sue Li, her dowry was truly lavish.
Mark Hunter was especially generous. Now that his businesses and property at Tenmile Hill had earned him a fortune, he spared no expense, sending the thickest betrothal gifts to the Wu family. When the villagers saw all those gifts carried into the Wu house, their eyes practically turned green with envy.
In the distance, May Parker hid behind a wall, her hair messy and her face dirty, staring at the radiant Mark Hunter and the betrothal gifts he brought. Jealousy made her clench her fists—she never expected that this hunter she always looked down on would suddenly become so rich.
May Parker looked toward the Evans Family's house, fixing her gaze on their tightly shut doors, feeling a surge of satisfaction. "Didn't you all despise my reputation? Yet you still brought home a brothel girl who everyone has slept with! Serves you right! One day, I'll rise above you all and make the Evans Family kneel and beg me!"
At the Wu residence, Sue Li grinned at the wedding dress spread out on the bed, hugged Cynthia Wu’s shoulders, and said, “Cynthia, your dad asked me to sleep with you tonight. You’re getting married tomorrow—I really can’t bear to let you go.”
Cynthia Wu smiled blissfully, “What’s there to be sad about? After I get married, I’ll still be living in the village. We can still see each other every day.”
“Exactly! Just look at how much Mark Hunter dotes on you. He even rebuilt a house in the village and brought your dad over to live with you. Where else could you find such a filial and loving husband?” Sue Li teased.
Cynthia Wu’s cheeks flushed. She playfully spat at Sue Li, “You’re always teasing me! Look at your own husband—when he heard you’d be sleeping with me tonight, the look on his face was so reluctant, like he couldn’t bear to be apart from you for even one night.”
As night fell, the two lay on the bed. Cynthia Wu’s face was bright red as she leaned in and whispered, “Sue Li, I lost my mother when I was little, so there were a lot of things no one taught me. My dad’s a man, so it’s awkward for him to talk about these things. That’s why he asked you, as my ‘stand-in mother,’ to sleep with me before I get married.”
Sue Li had no idea what Cynthia Wu was getting at and said, “Oh, come on, getting married doesn’t change anything. We’ll still be best friends.”
Cynthia Wu shoved Sue Li, her face turning even redder. “Sue Li, you have to teach me about, um, about…”
“About what?” Sue Li was momentarily confused.
Cynthia Wu buried her face in the quilt, embarrassed. “Sue Li, stop pretending you don’t know! I mean, that… that thing between husband and wife, you and Lucky…”
