Evans Family in Turmoil

"Oh heavens, what did our family do to deserve this?" Grandma Evans wailed, sitting on the ground and sobbing uncontrollably.

Mrs. Thompson darted out, exaggerating her expressions, and grabbed Grandma Evans by the arm. "Oh dear, why are you crying on such a happy day? Crying at your family's wedding is so unlucky! Look at your eldest granddaughter-in-law, she's gorgeous—no wonder she's a courtesan! I heard those courtesans in the pleasure house can earn at least a hundred taels a night! See how capable Arthur Evans is, marrying a courtesan; he saves a hundred taels every night just by having her as his wife!"

Grandma Evans glared fiercely at Mrs. Thompson and snapped, "You heartless woman, always here to kick us when we're down!"

Mrs. Thompson grinned even wider. "I'm just here to offer my congratulations—how is that kicking you when you're down? Weren't you bragging about Arthur Evans's wedding just days ago? I'm sincerely congratulating you! In all my years, I've never seen such a grand marriage! A courtesan—now that's not something just anyone can marry! Tsk tsk, Grandma Evans, you're truly blessed. Just wait to hold your great-grandchildren!"

Grandpa Evans was fuming too, chasing after Mrs. Thompson and yelling at her to get lost.

Mrs. Thompson covered her mouth, grabbed the Tofu Beauty, and ran far away. She turned back, hopping and shouting, "Arthur Evans, you're really set now! If your family runs out of money, just have your wife spread her legs—silver will come rolling in, hahaha!"

Lila Green, ever brash, immediately picked up a stone and hurled it at Mrs. Thompson, cursing, "You shriveled old hag, what nonsense are you spouting! Believe it or not, I'll rip your mouth right off!"

Arthur Evans's face grew even darker, his fists clenched tight, and his gaze at Lila Green was full of venom.

"What are you staring at? Move along, all of you!" Lila Green grabbed a stick and drove the villagers off. In an instant, the Wu Family courtyard was empty, leaving only the Evans family behind.

Su Li and Fourth Uncle hid inside Cynthia Wu's room, while several women covered their mouths, struggling not to laugh.

Su Li whispered, "Looks like Lila Green really knows what she's doing. The Evans family won't have a moment's peace from now on!"

Bai Lu replied, "That's for sure. Lila Green was notorious for being fierce and impossible to deal with back at the pleasure house—she was called 'Ghost's Bane' in the underworld. If the Evans family thinks they can handle her, they're in for a rude awakening."

Outside, Lila Green called out to Grandma and Grandpa Evans, "Hey there, Grandpa, Grandma, your new granddaughter-in-law is here—aren't you going to give me a little something? Where's the silver? Where's my red envelope?"

Grandma Evans had no intention of giving her a red envelope, but Lila Green snatched the rented jewelry and a silver bracelet right off Grandma Evans's head.

Grandma Evans was so furious she could barely speak, gasping, "Wretched woman, give those back! I rented them—I have to return them!"

"Oh, you rented them?" Lila Green snorted, stuffing the jewelry into her bosom. "That's your problem. Figure it out yourself."

"You! You!" Grandma Evans was so angry her hands wouldn't even lift, glaring venomously at Lila Green.

Just then, Doctor Wu opened the door. Arthur Evans asked, "Doctor Wu, how's my mother doing?"

Doctor Wu shook his head and pointed inside. Mrs. Zhao lay on the bed, her mouth twisted to one side. "She had a stroke. It's not too serious, but she'll need to rest in bed for a while."

Lila Green lifted her skirt and walked in, glanced at Mrs. Zhao, then casually took the rented jewelry off her head. "Since Mom's not well and Grandma's so old, I'll take charge of the household from now on. Grandma, hand over all the silver and valuables later. Done deal. I'm heading home now. Doctor Wu, if you can't cure my mom, don't bother wasting money on medicine—just carry her home to rest."
