He Is My Husband

Looking at the crowd of villagers before her, Lily Evans knew she had to give everyone a reasonable explanation today, or she wouldn’t escape the fate of being drowned in a pig cage. She understood that in this situation, acting tough wouldn’t help—pretending to be weak and fragile would instead stir up the villagers’ sympathy.

So Lily lowered her head and tears welled up instantly. Wiping her tears, she looked at Helen Parker and Grandma Evans with a sob: "Grandma, Auntie, my mother and I have only ever wanted to live quietly all these years. Must you really drive us to despair before you’re satisfied?"

Lily was already beautiful and slender, and now, crying like a rain-soaked flower, she looked like a delicate beauty—enough to tug at anyone’s heartstrings.

Lucky, not understanding what was happening, grew anxious and hurriedly wiped Lily’s tears. "Don’t cry, wife. Whoever bullies you, I’ll protect you from now on."

Seeing Lucky’s pure, worried face, Lily felt a warmth in her heart.

This fool might be simple-minded, but he was truly sincere to her. Compared to those cunning men outside, Lily suddenly felt that marrying this silly man wasn’t so bad after all.

Helen Parker shouted, "Everyone, look at these two shameless people—acting intimate in public! Have they no shame?"

Lily gently patted Lucky’s hand, then turned to the villagers and said, "Folks, this is my husband, Lucky. We just got married yesterday. My family is poor, so we couldn’t afford a banquet. My mother said to keep things simple—we only bowed to heaven and earth at home."

Lily’s words left Helen Parker and Grandma Evans stunned. "What? He’s your husband? How is that possible? He’s obviously your lover!"

Margaret Evans walked over, her face still pale, but she straightened her back and spoke up for her daughter. "Don’t you dare slander my Lily! Lucky is the husband she bowed to at the ceremony. Lily is a filial child—she was afraid that if she married out, I’d be left all alone with no one to care for me. So she took in a resident son-in-law. It’s my fault for dragging Lily down…"

Margaret Evans spoke as she remembered her hardships, tears falling uncontrollably.

When the villagers heard Margaret Evans’s words and looked at Lucky’s simple-minded face, they suddenly understood.

If Lily Evans married out, no man would want his mother-in-law to live with them. That’s why Lily took in this fool as a live-in son-in-law, planning to live with her mother. In this light, Lily was actually an understanding and filial child—willing to marry a simpleton for her mother’s sake.

The Village Chief stroked his beard, looked at the pitiful mother and daughter, and sighed, "Ah, life isn’t easy. So it was all a misunderstanding. I knew Lily was a good child—how could she do such a thing?"

Helen Parker quickly said, "Village Chief, why do you believe everything Lily says? That man is obviously her lover!"

The Village Chief glared at Helen Parker, displeased. "Marriage is a matter for the parents. Lily’s mother has personally approved this match. You’re just an outsider—mind your own business."

Grandma Evans didn’t want to let Lily off so easily, but only now did she realize that Lily had deliberately set a trap, coaxing her into publicly saying that the Evans Family had already severed ties with Lily and her mother. Since the ties were cut, she couldn’t interfere in Lily’s affairs as a proper elder—otherwise, she’d be contradicting herself.

At this moment, Grandma Evans was so angry she could spit blood, but she was helpless against Lily and could only curse under her breath: "That wretched girl Lily—when did she get so clever?"

“Mother, say something! You’re the proper elder—if you don’t acknowledge this marriage, then they’re just carrying on illicitly!” Helen Parker was unwilling to give up.

There was no way Grandma Evans would admit to her relationship with Lily in public. Frustrated, she vented her anger on Helen Parker, slapping her across the face and scolding, "Shut up, you useless fool!"
