Utterly Superficial

"Doctor Wu the Miracle Healer?" Evan Lin heard someone exclaim, and then saw many guests in the hall stand up, all craning their necks to look toward the entrance.

"You must not be from River City, are you? You don't even know Doctor Wu the Miracle Healer?" Simon Zuo glanced at Evan Lin, smiling faintly, his eyes full of even greater disdain. "Doctor Wu is a highly respected master of medicine here in River City. They say he used to roam the martial world, traveling everywhere—he's a true expert, through and through."

"Any ordinary illness—once it reaches his hands—needs at most three days before the medicine cures it completely. Most people never even get a chance to meet him."

After Simon Zuo finished, Linda Zhao picked up the thread: "I actually had the good fortune to see Doctor Wu once. He truly looked like someone with an immortal's aura. My husband fell ill a while back, and we tried to invite Doctor Wu several times, but no matter how much we asked, he never came. It's a real pity."

Linda Zhao let out a quiet sigh as she spoke.

At that moment, Julia Du turned her gaze toward Summer Mu. "Doctor Wu's medical skills are exceptional. Summer Mu, I think this could be a real opportunity for you."

Although news of Summer Mu’s father’s grave illness hadn’t spread widely, Julia Du, as a member of the upper circle of the Liu family, had still heard some rumors over the past few days.

After saying this, Julia Du glanced at Evan Lin. "Since you’re Rachel’s classmate, you might as well take this chance to broaden your horizons. See as much as you can—opportunities like this are rare and precious for someone like you."

Julia Du’s words sounded casual, like a typical elder giving advice to a junior. But when Rachel Liu heard it, she frowned slightly, while Simon Zuo at her side looked even more pleased with himself.

Between the lines, Julia Du’s meaning was clear: she was drawing a line between Evan Lin and Rachel Liu’s social circles, subtly warning Evan that he and Rachel belonged to different worlds.

"No need to worry about me," Evan Lin replied calmly, making Julia Du inwardly snort in annoyance.

Meanwhile, Summer Mu’s expression grew complicated; at this moment, he could hardly spare any attention for Evan Lin next to him.

Summer Mu had heard plenty about Doctor Wu the Miracle Healer’s reputation, but had never had the chance to meet him. He’d even asked people to help him contact Doctor Wu, hoping he could treat his father, but not once did he even get to see him.

The villa door opened and Warren Wu walked in, dressed in white. He wore a gentle smile and his steps were steady; as he entered the manor, he looked completely at ease, almost like he was strolling through a garden. From his appearance, he truly seemed like a master from another world.

Not long ago, Warren Wu had been invited to Brightsea City by Ping Nianhua for a hefty sum, hoping to make a big profit. But things went wrong—he was exposed and had to flee Brightsea overnight, utterly disgraced.

Because of that, Warren Wu had been in a foul mood these days. This time, he’d suddenly heard that Jared Qian had some rare items up for auction, so he’d hurried over, eager to join the excitement.

"Doctor Wu! Such an honor to finally meet you!"

"Miracle Healer! When will you have time to visit my home for a consultation?"

"Doctor Wu! May I ask when you’ll be available for appointments?"

All eyes turned to Doctor Wu; some guests instantly brightened at the sight of him and hurried forward, adopting an extremely respectful and almost reverent attitude.

Some people here genuinely wanted to meet Doctor Wu the Miracle Healer in person. After all, rumor had it that with just a casual prescription, he could help someone prolong their life.

Naturally, such a miracle drew countless people, all eager to get close.

"Everyone, I’m just here to join the fun today. As for consultations, I won’t be seeing any patients—my apologies." Doctor Wu chuckled, turning down every request.

A true master had to carry himself like one.

His fame was spread by word of mouth—one person to ten, ten to a hundred—and it had to be wrapped in mystery and a touch of aloofness.

Warren Wu understood this perfectly.

The few people who rushed forward now looked disappointed and unwilling to give up.

Warren Wu continued walking inside, but hadn’t gone far before someone stopped him.

"Miracle Healer! Please, could you come home with me just once?" Summer Mu blocked Warren Wu’s path, looking anxious but respectfully pleading.

"You?" Warren Wu glanced at Summer Mu with a sidelong look.

"My name is Summer Mu. I’m hoping you can help save someone’s life," Summer Mu introduced himself.

As soon as Summer Mu spoke, Summer Jade sneered, "Summer Mu, don’t bother. Do you know why he’s called the Miracle Healer? It’s not just his medical skill—it’s because he values fate and timing when treating people."

"Doctor Wu didn’t come here today to treat anyone. He already said he’s not taking patients—do you expect him to make an exception for you? Or do you think your face is bigger than all the uncles here?"

As soon as Summer Jade finished, several guests who’d just been refused by Warren Wu nodded in agreement.

"That’s right. If Doctor Wu says no appointments, then no appointments. You can’t force him." A middle-aged man in a suit looked at Summer Mu, his voice deep and gravelly.

"Exactly! The Miracle Healer’s rules can’t be broken, or I won’t accept it!" another man, thin and cold-faced, added with a sneer.

"Summer Mu, if it’s not meant to be, just wait for next time," Linda Zhao advised, while Julia Du nodded slightly in agreement.

She glanced at Warren Wu, instantly impressed by his otherworldly, masterly aura.

Now that looked like a real master from another world.

"Well, since everyone feels this way, I certainly won’t go back on my word," Warren Wu nodded, then waved his sleeve. "My friend, please wait for another chance. If fate allows, I’ll help; if not, it cannot be forced."

Summer Mu’s face turned pale, then flushed. Many people looked at him with obvious mockery in their eyes.

When someone’s down, everyone piles on. If Summer Mu’s father died, his position as the third young master of the Summer family would be lost for sure.

If they didn’t kick him while he was down now, it just wouldn’t be in their nature.

"See that? This is what a true master looks like," Simon Zuo said to Evan Lin, smirking. "Take a good look. With your status, you probably won’t get another chance to see someone like this—he’s practically a living legend."

Simon Zuo’s voice was loud enough for Julia Du and Linda Zhao to hear as well.

Julia Du glanced at Evan Lin, trying to read his expression, but quickly grew disappointed.

She realized that this young man’s expression hadn’t changed at all.

Was he hiding his true thoughts, or was he just too naive to understand?

"Him? A living legend?" Evan Lin finally spoke, his tone playful.

Julia Du frowned, a little displeased. "Doctor Wu is a famous miracle healer in River City, known for saving people from illness. To ordinary folks, he’s practically half a living legend!"

She deliberately emphasized the words ‘ordinary folks.’

She looked at Evan Lin, now harboring even more prejudice against him because of his earlier remark.

"Him?" Evan Lin shook his head slightly and sighed.

"How superficial."
