Chapter 626: Devour
Ragulin's mount was the first to strike, biting clean through the skull of the fallen Skeletal Warhorse and swallowing the soulflame that burned within.
This is an ability possessed by every undead creature—undead devouring...
The world of the undead is cruel by nature; among them, there is only the stark reality of devouring and being devoured...
Most of the time, it's the higher undead who devour the lower ones.
Just like Leon's Bone Plane: on its barren, black wastelands, Bone Demons can freely devour the soulflames of any Skeletal Warrior to replenish themselves. But for a Skeletal Warrior to devour the soulflame of a Bone Demon? That would be nothing short of a dream...
The legendary Undead Plane is the same, only even crueler and more naked in its brutality...
In the strictly stratified world of the undead, for lower undead to devour the higher is nearly impossible. The gap in power is one thing, but the sheer pressure of rank alone is enough to make lesser undead tremble before their betters. Forget stealing soulflame—from moving a single finger, even that would be a struggle...
But Ragulin and Barton, summoned by the Death Tome, are clearly exceptions...
Because Ragulin and Barton were both summoned from the Death Tome, they obey Leon absolutely. There is no question of hierarchy between them. They would charge even at Oracis, let alone a Death Knight on its last legs.
And so, the bizarre scene before them unfolded...
Two lesser undead pinning down a greater one, feasting greedily and devouring its Soul Fire with wild abandon. If undead could express emotion, those two might have even licked their lips...
Amidst the screams, the Death Knight's Soul Fire burst forth in two streams of ghostly blue flame from the hollow of his visor, surging toward Ragulin and Barton...
In barely a dozen seconds, the Death Knight's screams faded, then vanished completely.
His Soul Fire was split and devoured alive by Ragulin and Barton.
After consuming the Soul Fire of this level-38 Death Knight, both of them surged with Necrotic Miasma, their auras growing ever stronger.
Looks like once they finish digesting the Death Knight's Soul Fire, both will probably advance in rank.
Ragulin, at level 36, would surely advance to 37. Barton, already at 37, might not reach 38, but at the very least, he'd hit the peak of 37!
Starting from level 35, every rank brings a tremendous leap—much like the fifth rank for human Title Archmages, a major watershed.
Each new level brings a massive boost. For example, just now, Leon hadn't even summoned Ragulin and Barton to join the fight.
