Saving Lives Is My Duty

2/14/2026

"Jinling, how many casualties were there in this accident?" Now that the immediate danger was over, Serena Feng remembered her duty as a doctor.

No matter how these noble families treated her, in the face of such a disaster, she couldn’t just stand by and watch. If not for herself, then for William Wang Jinling.

This was a perfect opportunity to do a good deed.

"Twelve dead, twenty-seven injured." As he spoke, William Wang Jinling’s eyes darkened, a flash of anger passing through them.

A wolf pack suddenly appeared in the Hundred-Herb Garden—this was no accident. Someone had driven these wolves here.

Wolves are pack animals; when they hunt, they move together. But as soon as these wolves entered the Hundred-Herb Garden, they scattered—and...

They only bit people, never tried to eat them. Clearly, these wolves were raised by someone.

Seeing William Wang Jinling like this, Serena Feng more or less knew what he was thinking. But with Wendy Wynn and the others present, she didn’t ask further.

Watching the guards carry the wounded toward the Literary Pavilion, Serena Feng asked, "Jinling, is there a doctor at Hundred-Herb Garden? Are the injuries serious? How long until the doctors arrive?"

"No, there’s no doctor at Hundred-Herb Garden. Some have bites on their necks, others on their thighs—it looks pretty bad. We've already sent for doctors, but it’ll take at least an hour for them to get here." William Wang Jinling looked at Serena Feng, his gentle eyes flashing with disapproval.

He knew exactly what Serena Feng intended to do, but...

If she managed to heal these people, all would be well. But if anything went wrong, Serena Feng would be accused of killing with incompetent doctoring.

"Jinling, I'm a doctor. Let me go take a look."

She might be cold and ruthless, only caring for herself and those close to her when danger struck, but she had her own principles. Contradictory as they were, she didn’t mind.

"We'll help you too." The girls who had blocked Serena Feng at the latrine now hurried forward as well.

Serena Feng glanced at them but said nothing more.

"I'm going to clean up a bit. You go ahead."

She found a deserted spot, took off her outer gauze skirt, pinned up her long hair, and drew emergency supplies from her Smart Med-Pack.

Her own wounds were not too bad—just a few scratches from wolf claws. Serena Feng disinfected them with hydrogen peroxide, cleaned them again with saline, bandaged them, then took two anti-inflammatory pills just in case.

Looking over the items on the ground, Serena hesitated, then packed two boxes of anti-inflammatory pills and a few tetanus shots.

These wolves weren’t rabid, so there was no risk of rabies. But if the wounds were too severe, infection was still a danger. It was best if the tetanus shots weren’t needed, but if they were and she couldn’t bring them out, that would be a problem.

It was risky, but lives were at stake—Serena Feng didn’t hesitate further. Besides, she knew she’d have to reveal a little more of her skills sooner or later; she couldn’t spend her whole life saving people in secret.

Serena Feng loaded everything onto a tray and hurried toward the Literary Pavilion.

As soon as Serena Feng stepped inside, Ethan Hsieh rushed up, eyes red from crying, and dragged her in. "Serena Feng, you’re finally here! Please, save my sister—she might not make it!"

"Let go. Lead the way." Serena Feng stepped back, and the others came forward too, though none were as frantic as Ethan Hsieh—they just pleaded quietly.

Serena Feng nodded, telling everyone to wait outside, then followed Ethan Hsieh into the room where the wounded were being kept.

The air inside was thick with the smell of blood. Serena Feng quickly surveyed the wounded and, seeing things weren’t as bad as she’d feared, kept her thoughts to herself.

"Hurry, hurry, my sister..." Ethan Hsieh was completely focused on his sister. He’d heard that people bitten by wolves, even if saved, would become like wolves themselves—always wanting to bite others.

Ethan Hsieh’s sister had been bitten on the neck by a wolf, and blood kept pouring out. She’d also been clawed elsewhere, her whole body covered in blood—a terrifying sight.

Serena Feng put on medical gloves, set the tray on the ground, and said to Ethan Hsieh, "Go fetch several jars of strong liquor—the strongest you can find."

Serena Feng didn’t take out hydrogen peroxide or saline—she’d come empty-handed today, and pulling out large bottles of medicine would only raise suspicion.

With all the chaos, she only brought anti-inflammatory pills, bandages, a scalpel, tweezers, and other small items. These could be kept on her person and wouldn’t draw attention.

"Alright, I’ll go now!" Ethan Hsieh sprinted off. Soon the liquor arrived—Eastlyn people were heavy drinkers, and strong distilled spirits were available. They’d do for cleaning wounds.

Serena Feng opened a jar and cleaned Ethan Hsieh’s sister’s wound. When the liquor touched the wound, the burning pain made her scream.

"It hurts, it hurts! Brother, Mom, Dad, save me!" Ethan Hsieh’s sister cried, writhing in pain.

"Hold her down." Serena Feng knew how much it hurt to have liquor poured on a wound, but with limited resources, she had no choice but to make her endure it.

"Okay." Ethan Hsieh obeyed immediately.

Soon, the wound was clean—but then she discovered...

There was actually a wolf fang embedded in the wound.

Serena Feng’s expression instantly darkened. She immediately took out a syringe and gave Ethan Hsieh’s sister a tetanus shot.

"Serena Feng, what are you doing?" Ethan Hsieh asked, confused by her actions.

"Shut up." Serena Feng glared at him, and Ethan Hsieh didn’t dare ask again.

After finishing the injection, Serena Feng separated the needle and syringe, then began cleaning the wound—removing the wolf fang, scraping away the flesh around it, stopping the bleeding, applying medicine, and stitching up the wound.

Watching Serena Feng literally sew human flesh, everyone was astonished, but no one dared to ask.

Ethan Hsieh’s sister had other wounds too. Serena Feng cleaned each one with strong liquor, medicated them, and stitched up the ones that needed it.

Of course, Serena Feng used dissolvable stitches—no need to remove them later. After finishing, she handed Ethan Hsieh some anti-inflammatory pills. "Take two and feed them to her."

Turning around, Serena Feng saw Caleb Wang, William Wang Jinling, Wendy Wynn, and the others behind her. She bluntly ordered, "Didn’t you say you’d help? Get to work. Clean the other wounds, but be careful not to touch them directly. If you find any wolf fangs or debris, call me."

Cleaning the wounds was crucial. If they did the initial cleaning well, Serena could take over much faster later.

"Alright." William Wang Jinling and Caleb Wang answered at once.

After watching how Serena Feng did it, they realized it wasn’t so hard after all.

"We don’t know how..." Wendy Wynn and the others hesitated, afraid to start.

"No one’s born knowing how." Serena Feng replied, then said nothing more. She picked up the tray and moved on to the next patient.

"My sister..." Ethan Hsieh asked anxiously.

"She’ll be fine. The doctor will be here soon."

She was only one person and could only do simple treatments—just enough to prevent infection.

Ethan Hsieh wanted to say more, but Caleb Wang stopped him. "I know you’re worried about your sister, but trust Serena Feng—she knows what she’s doing. Besides, she can’t stay with your sister the whole time, there are other injured people. You watch over your sister, my brother and I will help. If anything happens, call out. Serena Feng isn’t unreasonable."

Ethan Hsieh looked ashamed and nodded. "I was just anxious."

"Worry clouds judgment."

Caleb Wang understood. If it were his own brother hurt, he’d be just as worried and lost. But as long as Serena Feng was there, he felt at ease...
