Disheartened by the Evans Family
"Is the fourth son's wife here?" Outside the door, Grandma Evans barged into the Wu Family House with Helen Parker in tow, storming into the room just as Mrs. Charlotte Evans was feeding medicine to Jack and Jill. Grandma Evans shrieked, "Who told you to give them medicine! Spit it out! Medicine isn't free! The adults at home are starving—where did you get money to waste on these two little pests?"
As she spoke, Grandma Evans lunged forward, trying to snatch the medicine bowl from Mrs. Charlotte Evans's hands.
Cynthia Wu and Lily Evans reacted quickly, blocking Grandma Evans and holding her back. Cynthia glared and shouted, "What are you doing? Who said you could make a scene in my house? If you want to throw a tantrum, go back to the Evans Family! This is Wu Family territory!"
Grandma Evans's eyes flashed with venom as she stared fiercely at the medicine bowl in Mrs. Charlotte Evans's hands. "You dare feed them? If you do, I'll break your legs! Put the medicine down!"
Then Grandma Evans craned her neck and shouted at Dr. Wu, "My family didn't drink your medicine, so don't you dare ask us for money!"
Dr. Wu was so angry his beard trembled. "Those are your own grandchildren!"
Grandma Evans glared, "I've got plenty of grandchildren. I don't care about these two sickly brats who waste money! My eldest grandson is all I need!"
Helen Parker chimed in smugly, "Exactly! As long as we have our Simon, that's enough! When Simon becomes a top scholar, he'll get Mother a noble title!"
Mrs. Charlotte Evans slowly turned her head, her eyes bloodshot with hatred for the two of them. She choked out every word, "You may have many grandchildren, but Jack and Jill are my flesh and blood! I'm their mother, and I love them!"
Grandma Evans replied, "Fine, love them all you want! Just don't take any of the Evans Family's money!"
Mrs. Charlotte Evans finished feeding the medicine little by little. Dr. Wu helped tuck the children in, and only then did Mrs. Charlotte Evans stand up, glaring at Grandma Evans. "Your Evans Family money? Look at yourself—everything you wear was bought with my husband's money! Even the house you live in was built by Arthur! Every bite you eat, every stitch you wear, it's all from my Arthur! Where do you get this Evans Family money from?"
Mrs. Charlotte Evans was usually gentle, speaking softly. Her sudden outburst stunned Grandma Evans into silence.
Grandma Evans faltered, realizing her clothes and jewelry really had been bought by Arthur.
Helen Parker whispered from the side, "Mother, Arthur is your son. What's his is yours. Ignore that nonsense from his wife."
Grandma Evans immediately regained her composure and shouted, "You unfilial thing! What kind of daughter-in-law talks to her mother-in-law like this? My son's money is my money! You hoard silver and take those two brats to see the doctor—that's stealing! I'll have Arthur divorce you!"
Mrs. Charlotte Evans couldn't believe people could be so shameless. She staggered backward, and Lily Evans quickly supported her, whispering, "Aunt Charlotte, don't ruin your health over people like her."
Mrs. Charlotte Evans took a deep breath, her trembling easing up a little.
While Mrs. Charlotte Evans was catching her breath, Helen Parker suddenly lunged forward, knocking her to the ground and quickly searching her for the two hundred coins.
Helen Parker snatched the money and darted out of the room like a rabbit, dragging Grandma Evans behind her. As she ran, she called back, "Let's see how you cure those brats without money! Any silver left goes to Simon for his exams!"
"Aunt Charlotte, are you alright? Are you hurt?" Lily Evans hurried to help Mrs. Charlotte Evans up.
Mrs. Charlotte Evans stared blankly at her two feverish, unconscious children, unable to even cry.
Lily Evans was speechless, sitting down beside her. "Aunt Charlotte, don’t worry. I’ll pay for the medicine first. When Uncle Arthur gets back, we’ll figure it out."
Mrs. Charlotte Evans still didn’t say a word, just kept staring at her children. Lily could see it—this time, even the gentlest soul in the Evans family had finally grown cold toward them.
