Sheltering Aunt Charlotte, Jack and Jill
Lily Evans stayed with Mrs. Charlotte Evans to care for Jack and Jill. The twins' little faces were flushed with fever, and in their delirium, they kept calling for their mother. Hearing this, Mrs. Charlotte's heart broke.
Having been away from home for a long time, Mrs. Wang grew worried and sent Yuanbao to look for Lily Evans.
"Darling." Yuanbao entered the room and saw everyone inside wearing anxious expressions—even Dr. Wu seemed troubled.
Mrs. Charlotte's numb face finally showed some emotion. "Lily, it's getting late. Let's all go home."
We can't stay at Dr. Wu's place forever, Mrs. Charlotte sighed.
Dr. Wu lent Mrs. Charlotte two small quilts. He wrapped the twins separately to keep them warm and prevent their illness from worsening.
Mrs. Charlotte carried Jack on her back and reached out to hold Jill.
Lily sighed, took Jack from Mrs. Charlotte, and handed him to Yuanbao. She said to Mrs. Charlotte, "Aunt Charlotte, look at yourself—you can barely stand. Don't risk dropping the children. Let Yuanbao carry them."
Yuanbao easily carried Jack on his back, with Lily helping to steady him from behind. Yuanbao then picked up Jill as well.
"Auntie, let's go. I'll walk you home," Wu Caiwei said, carrying several packets of medicine and supporting Mrs. Charlotte.
Mrs. Charlotte nodded wearily, gave a grateful smile, and followed behind Lucky and Lily Evans as they headed back to the Evans house.
But no one expected chaos at the Evans house—Grandma Evans, with her two daughters-in-law, had turned the Fourth Son’s home upside down, moving all the silver, valuable cloth, and food to her own room. They didn’t even leave a thick quilt behind.
Mrs. Charlotte stared blankly at the mess, her gaze dull as she watched the Evans family gleefully count their spoils. Her lips trembled, but she couldn’t utter a single word.
Lily Evans, Lucky, and Cynthia Wu had already witnessed the Evans family’s shamelessness, but today they managed to sink even lower.
“How are we supposed to live like this…” Mrs. Charlotte murmured, tears falling.
“Aunt Charlotte, come to my house,” Lily Evans took Mrs. Charlotte’s hand. “The twins are sick and can’t handle much more. Stay with us for now. When Uncle Charles returns, he’ll demand an explanation.”
“Yes, Aunt Charlotte, stay at our house. We have plenty of empty rooms, and everything you need—furniture, quilts—is there.” Lucky also looked at Mrs. Charlotte and the children with pity.
Mrs. Charlotte’s eyes darted about, and then she squatted down and began to sob.
“Let’s go home!” Lily Evans said to Jack and Jill, who were being carried by Lucky, and led the way.
Jack blinked sleepily, recognized Lucky carrying him, and called out “Brother-in-law” before drifting off again.
Hearing Jack call him “Brother-in-law” made Lucky so happy that his steps grew lighter.
Cynthia Wu helped Mrs. Charlotte up and comforted her as they walked: “Don’t be sad, Auntie. Things will get better.”
Mrs. Charlotte slowly blinked. “Yes, things will get better…”
News of Mrs. Charlotte and the twins being mistreated by the Evans family quickly spread through the village. The villagers cursed the Evans family for their cruelty, but Grandma Evans didn’t care at all. She’d already taken everything from the Fourth Son’s household—who needs dignity when you have silver?
Thanks to the Evans family’s attentive care, Jack and Jill recovered almost completely in just two days. The twins remembered Mrs. Wang’s kindness during the flood and clung to her every day, while Mrs. Wang was delighted to play with them and was happy every day.
“Aunt Charlotte, what are your plans? Do you still want to stay at the Evans house?” Lily Evans couldn’t help but ask, seeing Mrs. Charlotte so worried these days.
