Two Wife-Doting Madmen

"Madam, everything's been arranged." Belle was sweating, but her face was beaming with joy.

"Well done, Belle," Lily praised.

"Madam, why don't you and Lucky go home and rest? I'll keep watch here and have them start planting the mushrooms," Belle suggested.

"Alright, Belle. But remember, our mushroom-growing technique is top secret. Don’t let anyone near our mushroom house," Lily reminded her for the umpteenth time.

Belle agreed to everything, saw Lily and Lucky off, then turned back to the fields to keep working.

For several days straight, Belle was up before dawn and only came home after dark. Finally, every mushroom house was filled to the brim.

Lily rewarded Belle with a box of jewelry and fifty taels of silver, making Belle grin from ear to ear.

"The mushrooms are planted. Next up is the greenhouse vegetables," Lily said as she sat under the lamplight doing her accounts that evening. Autumn had arrived—it was time to plant. By winter, they'd be ready to harvest, and her Vegetarian Bistro wouldn’t have to worry about a fresh vegetable supply.

"Lucky, don’t go up the mountain tomorrow. The mushroom houses are done, and Mr. Lawrence said he’ll bring Shane Shen over to try my vegetarian dishes and discuss the mushroom trade. Last time, Mr. Lawrence missed out on drinking with you—he said it was a shame. This time, he insists on sharing a drink," Lily said with a laugh.

Lucky scratched his head. "Wife, whatever you say. Mark Hunter’s wedding is coming up, and he’s busy with preparations, so he hasn’t been going up the mountain. I’ve been helping him get ready for the wedding these days. I’ll tell Mark I won’t be helping at his place tomorrow."

Mentioning Wu Caiwei and Mark Hunter’s wedding, Lily couldn’t help but sigh. Back in the day, Wu Caiwei was hung up on that scoundrel, Mr. Liu. Thank goodness she came to her senses and saw how good Mark was. Now, every time Wu Caiwei talks about Mark, her face just glows with happiness. She probably doesn’t even remember Mr. Liu anymore.

"Getting married is like being reborn," Lily mused. "If you marry the wrong man, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. All those tears after marriage? That’s just water in the brain before marriage." Lily rambled on. "Now that Caiwei’s marrying Mark Hunter, I’m not worried about her at all. Mark will treat her well—she’s set for a happy life!"

"Then—then if you marry me..." Lucky nervously grabbed Lily’s hand. "Do you regret marrying me?"

"Regret?" Lily grinned at Lucky’s devastatingly handsome face. "Where else could I find a man who spoils me like you do? If I’d married anyone else, the moment I tried running a business, they’d have broken my legs and locked me in the back house."

"Hmph! That’s because those men don’t know how to appreciate you!" Lucky said proudly, hugging Lily. "My wife is smart and capable—better than any man! Why shouldn’t you run a business? I must’ve done something amazing in my past lives to marry someone as wonderful as you!"

"Wow, Lucky, when did you get so sweet? Who taught you to say things like that?" Lily teased.

Lucky’s face turned bright red. He stammered, "I—I learned from Mark Hunter... I thought what he said made sense... He said his wife knows herbs, can treat illnesses, and is soft-hearted and wonderful. He’s lucky to have her. So I said my wife is smart, good at business, kind, and wonderful too. I’m lucky to have you—it must be fate from several lifetimes!"

Lily burst out laughing. So Mark Hunter praises Wu Caiwei like that behind her back? Not bad, not bad!

Looks like it’s true—birds of a feather flock together. Lucky and Mark Hunter, two wife-pampering maniacs, probably spend their free time bragging about how amazing their wives are.
