Lila Green Dominates the Evans Family
The renovation of Serenity Vegetarian Bistro left Lily Evans thoroughly satisfied; Mrs. Wang kept praising everything, grinning from ear to ear.
Yuanbao looked around at this and that, absolutely delighted.
The whole family was in high spirits. They went to Zhang Ming’s restaurant at Shili Slope for a good meal, estimating that when the Wutong Academy opens at the Winter Solstice, the Serenity Vegetarian Bistro would be ready for its grand opening.
While the Evans Family feasted on delicacies at the restaurant, Lila Green sat at the Evans Family table, staring at a bowl of coarse cornbread. She angrily flung her chopsticks at Mrs. Zhao. "You expect me to eat this? Is this fit for humans? I want meat—give me meat, now!"
Mrs. Zhao complained with a bitter face, "Where would we get meat? All we have is this cornbread—eat it or leave it!"
Lila Green slammed her palm on the table, glaring at Mrs. Zhao. "I don't care, I want meat! Back when I was at the Pavilion, I ate and drank like a queen. How did I end up marrying into your Evans Family, eating gruel and scraps? I'm warning you—if you don't serve me good food and drink, I'll go to the magistrate and accuse Arthur Evans of mistreatment, and I'll get rid of this child!"
Mrs. Zhao was so stifled by Lila Green that her face turned dark, and Old Mrs. Evans groaned, slapping her thigh and crying out about their misfortune.
Su Daqi gritted his teeth, threw down his chopsticks, grabbed his hoe, and stormed out to work. Ever since Lila Green married into the Evans Family, there hadn't been a single peaceful day—he didn't want to stay a second longer.
After a noisy fuss over the meal, Mrs. Zhao had no choice but to cook Lila Green a bowl of meat.
"This? Tsk, back at the Pavilion, we wouldn’t even feed this to pigs!" Lila Green eyed the bowl of meat with utter disdain. But knowing the Evans Family’s circumstances, she kept grumbling as she ate.
Old Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Zhao stared at the meat in Lila Green’s mouth, drooling. Old Mrs. Evans grumbled, "Why are you only eating yourself, not leaving any for your elders?"
Lila Green shot Old Mrs. Evans a glare, not giving her a single bite. "What, I’m eating for the child in my belly. You old thing, how many days do you have left? Competing with your great-grandchild for meat—aren’t you ashamed?"
Old Mrs. Evans couldn’t out-argue or outfight Lila Green, so she could only choke down wild greens and coarse cornbread.
After eating, Lila Green refused to work. She was now the tyrant of the Evans Family, and no one dared mess with her.
Just then, the third daughter-in-law, Mrs. Sun, arrived with Sean Evans, hauling the monthly grain for the Evans elders.
Lila Green swung her handkerchief and sashayed over, inspecting the grain. She shot Mrs. Sun a look. "Why so little grain? That’s your own parents! How stingy can you be, giving so little—are you trying to send them begging?"
Old Mrs. Evans chased after her, shouting, "Mrs. Green, what nonsense are you spouting? Who’s a beggar here?"
Lila Green shot Old Mrs. Evans a look, pointed at Mrs. Sun’s nose, and said, "I’m asking for things for you two old folks, and you’re blaming me? Whose side are you on? Their family only gives this little grain each month—what’s that supposed to cover? Mrs. Sun, starting next month, add five taels of silver to the monthly offering."
Mrs. Sun’s eyes bulged like eggs as she stared at Mrs. Green. "What did you say? Five taels of silver? Why don’t you just rob us! We agreed at the split—we’d only give this much grain each month, not a penny more!"
But Lila Green wouldn’t let up. "How’s that fair? Isn’t your husband the most filial? Look at how skinny you’ve starved Old Mrs. Evans—hurry up and give more money."
Mrs. Sun scoffed, grabbed Sean Evans, and stormed off. "Trying to squeeze money out of me? Dream on! If you’re so capable, why not go fleece Lily Evans’s family instead!"
Lila Green’s eyes sparkled—right, how could she forget her wealthy Evans relatives?
