I was just wandering around, not really planning anything, and somehow ended up at a barbecue restaurant. That’s when I saw Alex surrounded by a crowd.
My mind went blank. I didn’t think about anything—I just rushed over.
By the time I snapped out of it, the fight was already over.
Honestly, I was still really angry, even though I wasn’t sure why.
But hearing Alex turn down Tina Ouyang in front of everyone and announce to the world that I’m his girlfriend—why did that make me so happy?
I must be going crazy.
I really must be losing my mind.
What should I do?
Maybe I should just leave.
Otherwise, how am I supposed to explain to Alex why I came over?
I can’t possibly say I came over because I was jealous, right?
No way, absolutely not! I can’t say that!
Maybe I’ll just say I was out for a walk and happened to end up here.
But will he believe that?
While Wendy was lost in thought, Alex was already striding over. Before she could react, he had already taken her hand.
"You..." Wendy was startled, trying to pull her hand away. Before she could say anything, Alex said resignedly, "Still mad? I didn’t eat anything, just had two sips of water. And I made it clear to her—there’s no way anything will happen between us."
Wendy pretended to stay calm, "What does that have to do with me? I don’t care."
"Really?" Alex looked at Wendy with a half-smile. "You truly don’t care?"
"Of course I don’t care. Otherwise—otherwise what?" Wendy’s eyes grew more flustered.
Alex sighed, took a deep breath, lifted Wendy’s face, and made her look at him. "Wendy Parker, there’s something I want to tell you."
"Huh?" Wendy hadn’t expected Alex to suddenly get so close, so intimate. She froze, forgetting his hand was still on her cheek, forgetting just how close they were.
"I, Alex Summers, would never date someone who’s just a pretty face with no substance. Remember that. The same goes for the rest of us. If looks were all that mattered, how many people would be trying to send beautiful women our way? Do you think Mrs. Yin is with the CEO just because of her looks?" Alex asked seriously.
"Of course not," Wendy replied instinctively. "Miss Yun is talented, graceful, and elegant."
"If even the CEO doesn’t care only about looks, why would you think I do? Why would you think I’d be interested in any pretty girl who comes along?" Alex countered.
"Uh..." Wendy was stumped.
"Besides, do you really think Tina Ouyang is that stunning?" Alex pressed. "How clueless would I have to be to get swept away by a girl from a small town?"
"Uh..." Wendy hesitated, realizing Alex made sense.
"Or do you think I’ve fallen so far that I’d accept any woman who showed up? I’m the Chief Special Assistant at Yin Enterprises, I have a doctorate, I’m worth millions, I’m respected—do you really think I’d settle for a supermarket clerk?" Alex was seriously doubting his own appeal.
Wendy blushed, finally realizing, "I never thought that."
"Good, I’m glad you don’t," Alex smiled. "Honestly, I don’t even like that type of girl. I like someone with a round, soft face, petite and adorable, a little scatterbrained but knows right from wrong, can embroider, make crafts, values friendship, and protects those around her."
Wendy listened and suddenly realized what Alex meant, her face turning red as she stammered, "Wh-what are you saying?"
"I’m confessing to you, silly!" Alex laughed softly, eyes focused on Wendy. "Wendy Parker, be my girlfriend, will you?"
Wendy’s mind went blank, overwhelmed.
That phrase echoed in her mind: Wendy Parker, be my girlfriend, will you?
Ahhh! Ahhh! I’m about to explode!
Why does my heart feel like it’s exploding with happiness?
Why does it feel like fireworks are going off in my head—so beautiful!
"If you don’t like Tina Ouyang, why did you agree to have dinner with her?" Wendy blurted out, not realizing how jealous she sounded.
Alex laughed, "So you’d finally face your feelings and decide whether you want to be with me."
Wendy stood there for a while, then finally brushed Alex’s hand away and stepped back, saying quietly, "We—we’re breaking the rules! You’re the CEO’s assistant, I’m Mrs. Yin’s assistant. This isn’t right."
"Why wouldn’t it be right? I think it’s perfect." Alex laughed. "Why do you think the CEO and Mrs. Yin agreed to let me bring you here?"
Wendy’s mind was a mess. "Then I—I’ll think about it! Let me figure it out first!"
With that, Wendy turned and ran off.
Alex just stood there, smiling.
The girl he liked wouldn’t get away so easily.
Meanwhile, at the retreat, Dr. Vivian Yuan was checking on Mr. Kee.
Mr. Kee opened his eyes slightly and asked, "How’s Alex doing?"
"Mr. Kee, you always have the best ideas. I’m sure those two youngsters are making progress," Dr. Yuan replied with a smile.
Mr. Kee nodded, satisfied. "I could tell as soon as they arrived—Alex hadn’t won the girl over yet, so he wanted me to help as a wingman."
Dr. Yuan finished the injection and adjusted the IV drip. "Exactly. They both care about each other but won’t take the first step. But with your plan, I’m sure they’ll confess their feelings soon."

Mr. Kee laughed happily.
"When you get older, you love seeing people come together," Mr. Kee coughed gently. "If two people belong together, don’t split them up."
"Yes, you’re right," Dr. Yuan said, tidying the blanket. "Rest well after this injection."
"Alright," Mr. Kee mumbled. "Is Si Chen coming soon?"
"Yes, Mr. Kee," Dr. Yuan’s voice faded as Mr. Kee’s eyelids slowly closed.
Dr. Yuan watched Mr. Kee fall asleep again and sighed.
Mr. Kee’s health was declining too quickly.
She feared he wouldn’t last even half a month.
Three days passed in a flash.
In those three days, Tina Ouyang didn’t come looking for Alex, and Alex didn’t go out shopping.
Frank Fang handled most of the shopping.
Alex stayed at the retreat, watering vegetables and catching bugs with Wendy, planting flowers and vegetables together, and even catching crickets outside for Wendy to play with.
They hadn’t officially announced their relationship, but the feelings between them were growing stronger.
At first, Wendy was shy and kept dodging Alex.
Later, Alex found all sorts of excuses to give her gifts—wild roses he picked outside, a little mole he caught in the fields, fresh fruits from the garden, quail eggs from the market, even a big floral scarf for ten bucks.
None of the gifts were expensive, but each one made Wendy react with a hilarious nine-square meme face.
When Alex gave her flowers, Wendy was shocked: "It’s the first time I’ve ever gotten wild roses as a gift!"
When he gave her the mole, Wendy squealed: "So cute! So adorable! I’m dying from the cuteness!" Then she turned around and couldn’t find it.
When Alex gave her fruit, Wendy took a big bite: "I bit it, so you can’t eat it now!"
When Alex gave her quail eggs, Wendy looked at him hopefully: "How about we find a hen to hatch them?"
When Alex gave her the ten-yuan scarf, Wendy made a meme face: "Come on, let’s do this! You give me a ten-yuan floral scarf, I’ll give you an eight-yuan pair of rustic shorts. If we’re going to be tacky, let’s be tacky together!"
So Wendy and Alex started a battle of mutual pranks.
You dress me up as a country girl, I’ll dress you up as the foolish son of the village chief.
The once-quiet retreat was suddenly lively thanks to the two of them.
Frank Fang and Dr. Yuan watched the two youngsters prank and tease each other every day. Frank wondered if he should try a different way to win someone’s favor.
Mr. Kee didn’t have much time awake, but whenever he heard their laughter, he couldn’t help but smile.
That’s how it should be.
Young people should fall in love and enjoy it.
That day, Alex was wearing eight-yuan shorts and a five-yuan tank top, while Wendy wore a fifteen-yuan floral robe and six-yuan rural shorts. They were squatting at the door feeding chickens and stealing eggs when a convoy arrived in the distance.
Hearing the cars, both of them stood up at the same time and looked over.
The next second, the air suddenly went quiet.
Charles Yin and Cecilia Gu both gaped in disbelief at the two standing at the door.
The same thought flashed through their minds: What on earth happened—how did our chief assistants end up like this?
Wendy and Alex were stunned too.
They’d been so caught up in teasing each other, they’d forgotten the CEO and Mrs. Yin were coming today!
Oh no, their image!
Is it too late to fix things now?
Bean Sprout and Coco Shen were stunned!
B, C, and D were frozen like statues!
They all picked up their phones and double-checked the location.
Nope, they hadn’t gone to the wrong place.
So, were the two people standing in front of them really their coworkers?
Alex reacted first, quickly pulling Wendy up. Despite their ridiculous outfits, his usual poise returned as he stood straight and greeted, "CEO, Mrs. Yin!"
