In This Life I Have Chosen You

Selena spoke slowly: "I went back and asked my clan to divine my future. They found out that you are actually my destined husband, and only you can bring prosperity to the Demon Clan. So the clan decided that I must follow you wherever you go, never leaving your side."

When Evan Chu heard this, it felt like a dumpling was stuck in his throat—he didn’t know what to say for a moment. In his mind, a thousand grass mud horses galloped by, leaving him utterly frustrated.

Becoming her husband was definitely possible; he couldn’t deny he had feelings for her. If not for her identity as a demonic princess, he might have already taken her right here and absorbed her Demonic Yin—instantly breaking through to the Heaven Martial Realm.

But the real problem was that she came from the Demonic Realm. The Demon Clan and the Human Race were mortal enemies. If he got together with her, he’d face endless gossip and criticism—though Evan felt he could handle that much.

But her identity was just too special. If she were just an ordinary demoness, it wouldn’t matter. The issue was that Selena was the daughter of the Demon Lord, once the strongest expert of the Demon Clan—and Evan himself was the reincarnation of the Lord of Frostbane, humanity’s former top powerhouse.

How could two people with such identities ever be together? And if he really did make the Demon Clan flourish, wouldn’t that make him a traitor to humanity?

Thinking about this, Evan felt like crying. He just couldn’t accept it—at least not right now.

"Is your Demon Clan’s divination even reliable? I’m human, you’re demon—how could we possibly be together? I admit you’re beautiful, so beautiful it’s impossible to refuse, but our identities are different. Have you ever thought about that?" Evan cut straight to the point—some things needed to be settled quickly.

The longer this dragged on, the worse it would be for both sides. If Selena started using seduction right now, he might really lose control—and if he ended up taking her, he’d regret it forever.

It was as if Selena had expected Evan’s reaction. She didn’t get angry or upset at all. Instead, she was calm and composed—completely different from before. Evan couldn’t help but think, "Is this really the power of love? You’ve got to be kidding me!"

"Evan, our Demon Clan’s divination arts are extremely accurate. Do you know how steep the price is to perform a divination?" Selena asked.

"What kind of price? I don’t know the first thing about divination," Evan replied, but he could tell Selena wasn’t talking about anything simple.

"You were born with a Pure Yang Constitution—one in ten thousand. Plus, you wield the Frostbane Sword. That’s why I had to divine your future, but unfortunately, the prophecy only showed half the picture. Still, that was enough," Selena said.

Evan blurted out, "Can you just spit it out all at once? This suspense is killing me!"

Selena smiled faintly. "A single divination requires the fresh blood of ten virgin boys and girls, plus the lives of two diviners. Tell me, isn’t that a huge price? Unless it’s something truly special, the clan never performs divination."

After the ritual, the prophecy appears on a giant screen. I saw you, I saw myself, and I even saw our child. The Demon Clan was incredibly strong—and you were the new Demon Clan Chief! Then a massive auspicious cloud appeared in the sky, shining brilliantly, and the vision vanished.

Evan nearly collapsed when he heard this. Him and Selena together—maybe. But having a child? That was pure fantasy! And the part he really couldn’t accept was becoming the Demon Clan Chief. That was just impossible.

The Twelve Demon Generals and the Demon Lord are humanity’s sworn enemies. If he became the Demon Clan Chief, wouldn’t that make him a traitor to his race?

"I just can’t accept this right now. Can you give me some time to think? This news is way too sudden!" Evan said helplessly.

It wasn’t that he didn’t believe Selena—it was that he couldn’t face what might happen. Turning the impossible into reality? No one could handle that.

A divination that sacrifices so many lives had to be real—it felt like a giant sword stabbing into Evan’s chest, making it hard for him to breathe.

The mountain wind blew past as Evan’s thoughts churned. The weight of his responsibilities was crushing—he just wanted to find a quiet place and sleep for three days straight.

"Evan, I know you can’t accept all this at once. I’m not forcing you. I just want to quietly stay by your side, protect you, and take care of you," Selena said gently.

If Selena weren’t a demonic princess—if she were Roxanne Lin or Jenny Sima instead—Evan would probably have pulled her into his arms and cherished her. But right now, he just couldn’t do it.

Having a woman like this love him should be the greatest blessing, yet Evan felt nothing but bitter suffering.

Luna had told him he’d have to absorb Selena’s Demonic Yin someday, meaning he was destined to accept her—but now just wasn’t the right time.

Evan sat down on the ground, gazed up at the bright moon, and said, "Selena, if you follow me, you’ll only suffer. You’re Demon Clan, I’m human—we’re destined to be apart. Don’t you understand that?"

"Evan, don’t say anything else. No matter what, I’ve chosen you in this life. It’s still far from dawn—why not absorb some stellar force? I sense you’re about to break through," Selena said.

"You can see my cultivation level?" Evan was startled and asked right away.

"That’s right. It’s a natural ability—I can see the strength of anyone below my realm. You’ve made huge progress, breaking through two layers in just a few days. You must’ve had a major lucky encounter," Selena said.

"Yeah, it really was a lucky encounter!" Evan replied, then immediately took out two high-grade Starstones and began absorbing their power.

Seeing Evan absorb two Starstones at once, Selena’s expression shifted slightly. He really was a genius—he’d even mastered splitting his mind in two. Truly remarkable.

Breaking through to the ninth layer of the Earth Martial Realm wasn’t easy. Although Evan showed signs of a breakthrough, he didn’t make it before dawn. The only gain was that the Chaos Qi in his Earth Star Pellet grew much stronger, with more spreading through his meridians.

"Let’s head back to the city! Time to reel in those three big fish—you can’t catch fish out here," Evan said.

Selena nodded, then suddenly grabbed Evan’s hand and soared into the air. Evan felt her hand trembling slightly, but when he looked at her face he couldn’t see anything—she’d already put her veil back on.

It was probably the first time Selena had ever taken a man’s hand so proactively. She really was nervous—her flight speed kept changing, and she couldn’t describe the feeling at all.

It was still early, and there weren’t many people on the city streets. Selena landed in a deserted corner, and the two of them walked toward the main road.

They found a breakfast shop, sat down, and began waiting to be discovered by people from the Prime Minister’s Manor…
