A Perfunctory Exam

Lynn Chen stormed off angrily, and as she passed by Evan Lin, she deliberately turned her head away, chin raised, refusing to spare him even a glance.

The other girls followed Lynn Chen, their eyes full of astonishment as they looked at Evan Lin.

Everyone knew that Ivy Liang always wore a cold expression—she was the type who never wasted words with anyone. Plenty of boys tried to get close, only to be kept at arm’s length by her frosty attitude.

But now, not only did she take the initiative to speak to a transfer student, she was joined by two other beauties—this was practically unheard of.

The girls surrounded Lynn Chen, probing for details about Evan Lin. In the end, all they got was Lynn’s annoyed, “He’s just a stinky guy.” Seeing she was still fuming, no one pressed further, but Evan Lin’s name had already made its way into their circle.

Mason He, nose still bleeding and full of resentment, glared at Evan Lin before being helped away by his classmates to deal with his injury.

All these little scenes made Yolanda Jiang and the others look at Evan Lin with increasingly strange expressions.

“You actually know Lynn Chen?” Ivy Liang suddenly asked, still surprised by all the commotion earlier.

“Yeah. Hand it over.”

Evan Lin nodded, took the box from Claire Li next to him, and left without another word.

You’re just going to leave like that?

Yolanda Jiang frowned as she watched Evan Lin walk away.

“Unless you have something else to say?” Evan Lin looked at Yolanda, his face indifferent. Yolanda stared back, speechless for a moment.

Claire Li quickly spoke up, “Thanks for last night. How about I treat you to a meal?”

Claire had originally wanted to just give Evan Lin some money, but after thinking it over, realized that wouldn’t be appropriate right now.

No need.

Hearing Evan’s words and watching him walk farther away, Claire was still a bit stunned. Yolanda scoffed, “Forget it, if he doesn’t want to eat, then whatever. We probably won’t see him much anyway.”

Don’t take it to heart, Claire. He’s acting like nothing happened—he’s not even hurt.

With that, Yolanda drove off with Claire Li and Ivy Liang.

That evening, at six thirty, students began arriving at school one after another.

During evening self-study, Ryan Luo deliberately switched seats with another student, avoiding the spot in front of Evan Lin. He glared at Evan, his eyes full of anger, but didn’t dare say a word.

You really need to be careful. I overheard someone at dinner saying they’re planning to go after you. You beat up Ryan Luo and Liam Liu—this isn’t a small deal. Jason Liu tilted his head, looking at Evan Lin with a worried expression.

Lots of people want to take me down, but they’re not even qualified to get in line.

Evan’s calm reply left Jason Liu sighing helplessly. He knew there was no persuading this transfer student to back down.

Just then, homeroom teacher Byron Yang walked in with a stern face, stood at the podium, and announced, “Tonight we’ll have a math exam. It starts at 7:30 and ends at 9:30—two hours. Do your best, everyone.”

A math exam?

The students were caught off guard by Byron’s announcement, but it wasn’t anything new—they just treated it as another routine math test.

If you need to use the restroom, go now.

A few students trickled off to the bathroom. Around 7:30, Byron Yang made a trip to the math office and brought out the exam papers.

As Byron walked back from the office to the classroom, his steps felt heavy. The test paper was tough for most classes, but their scores were better. For Class Twelve, though, Byron worried how many students would even pass.

What’s the point of always showing off your top students and grades? With a test like this, it’s totally meaningless!

Byron Yang felt a bit resentful, especially toward the math department head, Mr. Wang, who was also Class Two’s homeroom teacher. But with his class’s grades lagging behind, there wasn’t much he could do.

Byron handed out the test papers after entering the classroom.

This test is pretty tough, so do your best. Just get as many points as you can. No talking during the exam.

After a few words, Byron’s eyes landed on Evan Lin in the back row, full of dissatisfaction. Comparing Evan to fellow transfer student Lynn Chen, Byron felt especially unfair.

This test is harder than ever. That transfer student’s grades are a disaster—he’s bound to drag the class average down. Should I just exclude him when calculating the mean?

Byron pondered to himself.

Jason Liu glanced at the test, a bit surprised. “This one’s pretty tough,” he muttered.

Jason was one of the better students in Class Twelve, but even he found the questions challenging.

He glanced sideways, ready to say something to Evan Lin, but noticed Evan frowning as he scanned both sides of the test paper.

Don’t worry about doing badly—this test is really tough. Just do your best.

Jason thought Evan Lin was stressed out by the exam, but he had no idea Evan had already memorized all the answers the moment he got the paper.

Last time Evan took this test, it took him just over an hour. This time, maybe less than ten minutes?

Is this really the math exam from Jingzhou No.1 High School? So lazy—they just used problems from the Haizhou provincial math olympiad? Or is it because Mr. Gu’s name is so famous that they picked the test just by name?

Evan muttered to himself, then picked up his pen and started writing answers without even bothering to do any rough work.

Jason stared in shock as Evan scribbled answers on the test. In less than three minutes, Evan had already finished the multiple choice and fill-in-the-blanks. Jason sighed, thinking Evan had probably given up, and quietly started on his own test.

Byron Yang glanced over from the podium, his eyes landing on Evan Lin in the back row next to Jason.
