A Narrow Encounter Between Enemies

1/4/2026

Cecilia Gu immediately said to her mother, "Mom, it's getting late. Let's go rest."

Jane Gu finally snapped back to reality, saw that it was indeed late, and silently nodded.

Seeing the two of them head to their room, everyone else finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Finally, some peace!

Cecilia Gu shamelessly insisted on sharing a room with Jane Gu.

"Mom, you haven't looked well all day. Is it because Dad got remarried?" Cecilia Gu finally couldn't help but ask.

Sure enough, Jane Gu's face turned extremely pale.

Even if she didn't say anything, Cecilia Gu understood everything.

Cecilia Gu had been heartbroken before—she knew exactly how it felt.

She just hadn't expected that she and her mother would end up sharing the same pain.

"Mom..." Cecilia Gu took the initiative to hug her mother. She wanted to comfort her, but when the words reached her lips, she suddenly didn't know what to say.

"Mom's fine, it's just hard to adjust for a while. Cecilia, when Zach Zhao broke up with you... your heart must've hurt a lot, right?" Jane Gu looked at Cecilia with guilt. "Back then, I couldn't understand how you felt. Cecilia, you suffered."

With just those words, Cecilia Gu's tears began to fall.

Cecilia Gu didn't say anything; her tears just streamed down.

Yeah, back then, her heart ached so much, but no one could really understand.

But thankfully, all that is behind her now.

She had already gotten through it.

No matter how bitter or painful, it's all in the past now.

It's not that she was heartless—it's just that the more she cared before, the more courage she now hides inside.

Because she's not alone—she has to think about the child growing inside her.

But with so many things, even if the wound seems healed, it still hurts when you touch the scar.

Jane Gu wiped away Cecilia Gu's tears and said, "My daughter is so strong—how can I keep wallowing in self-pity? It's better to see the Gu Family's true colors early than to let them drag me down until I'm old and gray."

"Mom, I'm relieved to hear you say that," Cecilia Gu said seriously. "Don't worry. Just rest well for now—make up for all the lost sleep over the years. We'll talk about what comes next after that."

"Got it," Jane Gu said, patting Cecilia's hand. "Isn't it about time for your prenatal checkup?"

Cecilia Gu gently touched her belly and said, "Yeah, I should go for a checkup tomorrow. But I didn't bring our family doctor this time—I thought we'd be back in two days, but... It's fine, I can just go to a local hospital. By the way, Mom, I'm over three months along, so why isn't it showing yet?"

Jane Gu smiled softly, stroked Cecilia's belly with envy, and said, "I've never had a child myself, so I'm not really sure. But I remember reading that you only start to show after four months! You've still got time."

Cecilia Gu finally relaxed. "I was worried I was mistreating the baby and that's why it's not growing."

"Nonsense," Jane Gu said playfully, tapping Cecilia's forehead. "Don't overthink it. I'll go with you to the hospital for the checkup tomorrow. Now let's get some sleep."

With Cecilia Gu by her side, Jane Gu really did feel much better.

The two of them lay in bed, talking about Cecilia's childhood. Unknowingly, they let go of their worries and drifted off to sleep.

Early the next morning, Cecilia Gu woke up and saw that her mother wasn't beside her.

So early—where had her mom gone?

Just as Cecilia was lost in thought, the door opened and Jane Gu walked in from outside.

Cecilia Gu looked over and saw her mother all dressed up today—her eyes instantly lit up!

"Mom, you look beautiful!" Cecilia Gu said sincerely.

Jane Gu may be over forty, but she's still slim and curvy.

The fitted black-and-red dress she wore today made her look graceful and elegant.

Jane Gu's cheeks flushed—being praised by her daughter made her genuinely happy.

Mother and daughter had breakfast together. Alex drove them, and the three happily headed to the hospital for Cecilia's checkup.

When they arrived at the gynecology department, it was packed with people.

Alex went to get Cecilia Gu's number and apologized, "Young Madam, I'm so sorry. We came in a hurry and didn't bring our own doctor. Sorry for making you come here for the checkup."

Cecilia Gu replied with a smile, "How could this be your fault? I just got the dates wrong."

Jane Gu took Cecilia's hand and added, "It's just a routine checkup, nothing serious! We'll do a thorough one when we get back."

The three sat together in line, chatting and laughing, which drew a lot of attention.

Especially since they came as a group of three, people often mistook them for a mother-in-law, son, and daughter-in-law coming for a prenatal checkup.

When Cecilia Gu heard the fourth person ask, she couldn't help but burst out laughing.

It's really easy for people to get the wrong idea about this kind of thing!

Before Cecilia could explain, a voice came from behind: "Cecilia? What are you doing here!"

Cecilia hadn't even turned around when the person continued, "Didn't I tell you? Don't show up in front of me again. I'm not going to change my mind!"

Cecilia Gu and Jane Gu turned around at the same time, and instantly, the atmosphere in the room froze!

Howard Gu was slowly walking over, supporting a woman with a pregnant belly.

Howard Gu looked proud, while the woman he supported wore an air of arrogance.

Jane Gu's face instantly turned pale.

Cecilia Gu stared at her adoptive father in disbelief—he actually...

Alex immediately stood up and said to Cecilia, "Young Madam, let me help you inside for your checkup. People like that aren't worth your attention."

Cecilia Gu quietly nodded.

Alex was right—no matter how you explained things to people like that, he'd always see himself as the hero.

Even though Jane Gu's face was pale, she instantly straightened her back.

The woman Howard Gu was supporting was probably his newly married wife, right?

But honestly, that kid probably belongs to the guy next door, right?

Cecilia Gu tugged at Jane Gu's sleeve—some things are better left unsaid, no need to call it out.

Jane Gu understood what Cecilia meant and ignored Howard Gu, taking Alex's place and helping Cecilia inside for her checkup.

Howard Gu knew Alex was Charles Yin's assistant, but he was feeling pretty smug now!

Being both a newlywed and a soon-to-be dad—and with Charles Yin away—Howard Gu was feeling extra cocky.

"Why hasn't Cecilia gone back yet? A married daughter shouldn't keep staying at her mother's house!" Howard Gu still acted like he was her father, scowling. "Don't hang around here for no reason—if word gets out, it'll embarrass the Gu Family."

Alex gave Howard Gu a contemptuous look.

Alex might always act polite and cheerful around Charles Yin and Cecilia Gu, but that doesn't mean he lacks presence.

Honestly, if he didn't have presence, how could he be Charles Yin's assistant—especially his closest one?

Alex didn't say a word, just stood there, shooting a sidelong glance at Howard Gu.
