Saving a Life and Simon Sun’s Unexpected Fortune

2/14/2026

Prince Nolan tossed out the word "wife" left and right, so naturally and smoothly that Serena couldn't help recalling the love poem he once recited: "Three years, two bows, one wish—for my wife to walk by my side." She didn't respond, just shot him a glare.

Prince Nolan just smiled, saying nothing. Seeing Serena's embarrassed and annoyed expression, he stopped teasing her, picked up the pistol beside him, flipped off the safety, and aimed through the curtain at the direction outside.

"Wife, do you think I’ll hit their head, or their heart?"

"You won’t hit anything," Serena replied—then realized she’d answered to "wife," and turned her face away in irritation.

Nolan’s lips curled into a doting smile, but in the next second, his expression turned cold and ruthless, all tenderness gone, replaced by icy killing intent.

The atmosphere inside the carriage shifted instantly. Serena unconsciously slowed her breathing, sitting quietly to the side, eyes fixed on Nolan without blinking...

Nolan stared intently at the curtain, like a predator about to pounce, his whole body radiating a chilling aura that made people shiver.

Bang! Nolan squeezed the trigger lightly—his bullet flew out and struck a black-clad attacker right between the brows.

Bang! Another shot—this time, straight into the enemy’s heart.

Even shooting blind through the curtain, Nolan never missed—every shot found its mark, instantly easing the pressure on his personal guards.

Serena couldn’t see Nolan’s aim through the curtain, but watching him grip the pistol with both hands, so focused and intense, she found herself captivated.

Sometimes, a man’s seriousness is even more attractive than a woman’s. Nolan’s face showed no emotion, yet he still exuded a sense of strength and cold arrogance that made it impossible to look away...

Serena believed that as long as Nolan was here, no matter how dangerous the road back to the Capital was, she had nothing to fear. Whatever threats lay ahead, she and Nolan would make it home safely.

Inside Shandong Circuit, attacks like this happened three times. At first, Nolan didn’t intervene, leaving it to his personal guards. But as more and more of them were wounded, he had no choice but to step in—otherwise, by the time they reached the Capital, not a single guard would be left...

There were simply too many ambushes on the road. For safety, Zuo An suggested that Nolan and Serena take the small paths, and Nolan quickly agreed.

Sure enough, the next few days were much better. Taking shortcuts and winding through forests, the attackers had a much harder time tracking them, and the wounded soldiers could finally get proper care.

Serena’s shoulder was injured, so she couldn’t personally clean the wounds of the soldiers. Instead, she calmly instructed the junior guards how to treat the wounds, using the best medicines to heal them. Nolan’s guards were all handpicked—every life saved was precious.

"I wanted you to rest, but you still ended up exhausting yourself." Under the moonlight, Nolan led Serena toward a small river not far from camp.

"It was just a little talking, I didn’t do anything. How could that be tiring? Besides, have you forgotten—I’m a doctor, this is what I’m supposed to do." Her shoulder was hurt, but it didn’t affect her actions at all. Serena felt Nolan was making a fuss over nothing.

"You’re a doctor, sure, but you can’t even take care of yourself." Nolan rolled up his sleeves, crouched by the river, and wet a handkerchief. When Serena reached out to take it, he pulled it away.

"Don’t move." Nolan took the handkerchief and gently wiped Serena’s face, neck, and hands for her...

Even with danger lurking all around, they could still talk and laugh as if nothing was wrong. No matter what happened, they always kept their cool and knew how to savor life—each small gesture revealing their care and affection for one another.

Zuo An watched quietly from a nearby tree, gazing at the two bathed in moonlight, a hint of envy flashing in his eyes.

Those two... really do make people envious. Even the soft, quiet affection between them was something to long for.

How rare it is in this life to find someone who can share both hardship and prosperity. Zuo An had searched for years and never found it, but Nolan got it on his first try. Heaven really isn’t fair...

Heaven truly isn’t fair. Simon Sun looked at the energetic guards riding beside him, unsure if he should blame his own weakness or admit that Nolan’s men were just too strong.

He’d only been riding for three days, but he was already worn out, his whole body feeling like it was falling apart. The insides of his thighs were covered in blisters—if he didn’t have good medicine on hand, his legs would be ruined.

"Young Master Sun, there’s a teahouse up ahead. Should we stop and rest?" The guards weren’t tired at all, but seeing Simon Sun’s state, they worried he’d fall right off his horse if they kept going.

They’d assumed Simon was Serena’s disciple and that his riding skills would be decent, but clearly they’d overestimated him. If they’d known, they would have arranged a carriage instead.

"Alright." Simon wanted to tough it out, but his body wouldn’t cooperate, so he accepted the guards’ help.

At the teahouse, the guards dismounted first and came to Simon Sun’s side. "Young Master Sun, let me help you down."

Simon was deeply embarrassed, nearly burying his head in his collar.

His master always said that a doctor didn’t need to be a warrior, but still had to be physically strong—otherwise, he couldn’t handle the demands of the job. Simon really was weak.

There were quite a few people inside the teahouse, but the ones who drew the most attention were a richly dressed young lady and an elderly man with a head of white hair.

The young lady and old man were surrounded by guards and maids, and judging by the carriage and horses outside, they were clearly high status. Simon was too tired to notice the girl, but his own guards paid close attention and discreetly led Simon to the farthest table from them.

The guards could easily tell that the young lady and old man weren’t ordinary people.

Simon might have delicate features, but he wasn’t the type to attract attention. The girl and old man didn’t even notice him.

"Waiter, tea please." As soon as Simon’s guards sat down, they called out.

At that moment, the girl and old man finished resting. The girl helped the old man to his feet. "Father, be careful."

The old man, with his snowy white hair, looked old enough to be the girl’s grandfather, but was actually her father. No one dared question it—one look made it clear these two weren’t people to mess with.

"It's nothing," the old man said softly, patting the girl's shoulder. But as they reached the doorway, he suddenly froze, his whole body convulsed, his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed backward.

"Father, Father... what's wrong? Don't scare me!" The girl's face turned pale as she desperately tried to hold him up.

"Master... Master!" The guards and maids rushed forward together, supporting the old man.

"Doctor, doctor! Quick, go call Doctor Bai!" Though shocked, the girl didn't panic and immediately ordered the guards to disperse.

"Yes, Miss!" The guard hurriedly ran toward the carriage—their traveling doctor was inside.

The teahouse was so small that, even though Simon Sun sat in the corner, he still heard the commotion outside. Hearing someone cry for help, his healer's instinct kicked in, and he instinctively stood up to check, moving so quickly that even the guards couldn't stop him.

The guards' expressions changed and they immediately stood up to intercept, but it was too late—Simon Sun was already at the girl's and old man's side, his face serious as he said, "I'm a doctor—let me take a look."

The guards paled, hesitating whether to pull Simon Sun back. Treating the sick is good, but not everyone can be touched so casually. No one knows if today's encounter will be a blessing or disaster...
