Married Into a Family of Useless Men

Jasper Cheng was frantic. What would they do if their cash cow, Sam Evans, went missing? He was still counting on Sam to make him rich!

The three at home grew more and more restless the longer they thought about it, so they decided to head out and look for him.

They asked around along the street, but since it was New Year's, there weren’t many people out. Still, they went from shop to shop, and finally managed to track down Sam Evans’s whereabouts—turns out he was at a tavern, drunk, and had been picked up by a wealthy-looking man in a carriage.

"A wealthy-looking man? That must be Arthur Evans! So your father’s at Arthur’s house. Let’s go—let’s go get him back!" Susan Evans declared.

The three of them stormed over to Evans Manor, but were stopped at the gate by a young servant. "Master has instructed: no guests during the New Year."

Susan Evans put her hands on her hips and snapped, "Do you even know how to use those eyes of yours? You think we’re outsiders? How dare you look down on us! Do you even know who I am? I’m your master’s third sister-in-law, and this here is his own niece! Outsiders? Please. We’re family. Step aside and let us in!"

The servant refused to budge, but Susan Evans was fierce and strong. The three joined forces and charged inside, actually managing to break into the courtyard.

Once inside, Susan Evans shouted at the top of her lungs, "Sam Evans, get out here! Your daughter’s about to die and you’re hiding out at your brother’s place, living the good life? You don’t care about your own daughter?!"

After yelling, Susan Evans shot Lana Evans a look. Lana immediately understood and leaned weakly against Jasper Cheng, playing the part of the helpless victim. "Dad... Dad... where are you? Your daughter’s about to die, please save me!" she whimpered.

Jasper Cheng also shouted, "Lana! Darling! You’re still so young—you can’t die! What did we do to deserve this? Sam Evans, please, come save your daughter!"

The commotion in the courtyard was so wild—chickens squawking, dogs barking—that everyone in the Evans household was startled.

At that moment, Arthur Evans was in Sam Evans’s room, chatting with his brother. Hearing the ruckus outside, Sam’s face turned green with anger, and he stormed out, cheeks puffed with rage.

Arthur followed, and as he reached the corridor, he saw Mrs. Charlotte Evans hurrying toward the front yard as well.

Sam Evans was the fastest. When he saw the three troublemakers, his face went pale, then flushed with fury. Pointing at Susan Evans, Lana Evans, and Jasper Cheng, the usually mild-mannered farmer was so angry he couldn’t get a full sentence out: “You… you…!”

“Sam Evans, you finally showed up!” Susan Evans wasn’t about to let him off easy. She rushed forward, eyeing Sam’s new clothes from head to toe. “Well, aren’t you something, Sam Evans! Is this how a father should act? Your daughter’s on her deathbed, and instead of finding money or medicine, you’re here feasting and living it up at your brother’s place, even wearing new clothes! Do you even care about your daughter at all?”

Susan’s sharp tongue made Sam Evans blush even harder, leaving him speechless.

Mrs. Charlotte Evans stepped forward and looked Susan Evans right in the eye. “Susan, you’re talking nonsense. Who could make sense of that?”

Susan shot Charlotte a glare. “What’s so hard to understand? My Lana is gravely ill, did you hear me?”

“Tsk tsk, so Lana’s sick?” Charlotte sneered. “Well, Lana’s married into the Cheng family now. If she’s ill, go ask the Chengs to take responsibility! Why are you making a scene at my house? A married daughter is like water spilled on the ground—once she’s gone, she’s gone. Are you saying that even after marrying into the Cheng family, Lana’s food, clothing, shelter, medicine, and doctor’s bills should still be paid by her father? Then what’s the Cheng family for? Did you marry her off to a bunch of useless decorations?”
