Survival Against All Odds

12/2/2025

Maxwell Jing shook his head, frowning. "How is it possible that you still aren't dead?"

Bang! He felt a sharp knock to his head.

"Ow... What are you doing?" Maxwell Jing rubbed his head, looking at Ethan Gu in confusion. Why did he seem so strange?

Ethan Gu sighed. "Good thing you don't want to die, you're hanging on by sheer will! Otherwise, even the Revival Elixir couldn't save you!"

Maxwell Jing rubbed his head and frowned. "Isn't it all because of you? When I was about to die, you confessed. How do you expect me to die after that?"

Ethan Gu hugged him tightly and whispered, "I'm sorry..."

Maxwell Jing turned to look at him, unable to hold back any longer. "You're acting really weird!"

Ethan Gu gave a subtle, enigmatic smile. "What's so strange about me?"

Maxwell Jing's hair stood on end. "Don't smile so creepily!" Then, as if recalling something, his eyes widened. "You..." Did he remember? The Ethan Gu before him was clearly the same as he'd been in the past. No wonder he felt strange!

Just as Ethan Gu thought he'd be embraced and sobbed over, Maxwell Jing suddenly pushed him away, jumped several meters back, and looked ready to run.

Ethan Gu wasn't surprised at all. He simply narrowed his eyes, smiling gently. "Where are you going?"

"Ha... haha..." Maxwell Jing forced a laugh. "Han, have you remembered everything?"

Ethan Gu stood up and walked toward him. Faced with Ethan's relentless approach, Maxwell Jing retreated step by step, his smile growing stiff. "What... what do you want to do?"

Ethan Gu suddenly said, "I don't have any medicine on me right now!"

Upon hearing this, Maxwell Jing rolled his eyes, shoved Ethan aside, and sat down on the bed. "You should've said so! What a waste of facial expressions!"

After a moment, he finally asked, "How did you remember everything?"

"Only by facing death can one find new life!"

When the heart dies and love is extinguished, that is also when love is born anew. The so-called severing of emotions is not just the effect of the medicine, but also its cure. Taking the Oblivion Elixir only makes one forget the past and binds all feelings deep within, but it doesn't truly erase them. When the time comes to sever emotions for real, those feelings will surge forth and break free, and the Oblivion Elixir can be undone!

When Maxwell Jing 'died,' Ethan Gu truly severed all emotions—he could never love anyone again. Yet, it was precisely this that broke the Oblivion Elixir's hold!

Maxwell Jing was silent for a while, then suddenly said, "I should've died sooner!"

Ethan Gu reached out to knock his head again, but Maxwell Jing blocked him and squinted. "Don't forget you're not the Sanctuary Heir anymore. Don't think you can use your status to pressure me!"

"When have you ever cared about my status? I think the first time we met, you beat me up pretty badly!" Their dynamic was just as it had always been. Ethan Gu knew Maxwell Jing didn't need his guilt.

Maxwell Jing instantly jumped up, pointing at Ethan's nose and shouting, "You think I wasn't miserable? You know martial arts! Who's the real victim here?"

Ethan Gu stared at him wordlessly. Yes, he knew martial arts, but he was foolish enough not to use them—so he deserved to get beaten black and blue!

The two searched the room but couldn't find an exit. Maxwell Jing knocked on a wall, frowning. "This should be a door, but it looks like it can't be opened from the inside!"

Ethan Gu frowned, thinking. The place they'd fallen from was too deep, and the top was already sealed by ice and snow—it would be hard to climb back up.

Seeing Ethan unresponsive, Maxwell Jing walked over and sat beside him, face serious. "Ethan Gu, do you even know what respect means?"

Ethan Gu rolled his eyes at him, couldn't be bothered to respond, and simply lay down on the bed to sleep.

Maxwell Jing looked up at the ceiling, speechless. He had dignity too, you know! This was just too much!

After being stared at with those mournful eyes for so long, Ethan Gu finally opened his eyes, a hint of a smile in them. He reached out, pulled Maxwell Jing to lie beside him, and said, "Don't worry, someone will come to rescue us!"

Those people are so desperate for the treasure, they'll come looking for us soon enough!

Maxwell Jing unceremoniously pulled Ethan's arm over as a pillow, crossed his legs, and glanced around suspiciously. "Is this really the treasure? Was Grandmaster Xuan Tian that poor?"

"It should be. But there's something odd about this treasure. The map looks complicated, but it's actually easy to crack. Except for Healer's Sanctuary, everything along the way went too smoothly. And there aren't any traps here—it doesn't feel like a real treasure vault at all!"

Maxwell Jing suddenly sat up and patted Ethan. "Get up!"

"What for?"

Maxwell Jing grinned slyly. "Move everything!"

The two of them worked hard, moving everything from the stone chamber to the neighboring cave. Ethan Gu frowned. "If we hide it here, it'll still get found eventually!" Those people won't give up searching for the treasure so easily!

"Are you stupid? You were really smart when it came to messing with me, but now you can't figure out something so simple!" With that, Maxwell Jing kicked a mechanism on the side of the stone chamber, breaking it, then made it look completely natural—as if there'd never been a mechanism there at all.

Entering the cave and about to close the door, he suddenly remembered something, pulled a gold bar from the box, and tossed it into the stone chamber. "This gold bar will stand for the treasure!" he laughed.

Ethan Gu shook his head. He'd never do something so childish—Maxwell Jing loved this kind of thing. But whether it would actually work was hard to say. Human greed is terrifying; if people can't find the treasure, they won't give up so easily!

Maxwell Jing shut the door. "Now isn't this better? Even if these things are pretty shabby, Her Highness will be happy!"

Ethan Gu chuckled softly. "I thought you were collecting money for the Ghost Guild. Turns out you're just trying to please Her Highness!"

The cave was small to begin with, and after moving everything over, there was barely any space left. Maxwell Jing jumped onto the bed, grinning. "If Her Highness is pleased, won't His Highness be happy too? Most importantly, after all the trouble I went through falling down here, I deserve some comfort for my wounded heart! Pleasing Her Highness definitely isn't betraying His Highness!"
