Feeling Overwhelmed

"Mm." Evan Xiao nodded.

"But I'm not a Spirit Practitioner. You're the mighty General who protects the nation—how could you marry someone like me?"

"If I say I can, then I can."

"Actually, it doesn't have to be so complicated..." she muttered.

"Hm? Complicated?" Evan Xiao frowned at her.

He hadn't even complained about it being complicated, yet she was the one fussing?

"Uh... What I mean is... If you marry me, people will definitely laugh at you. Why not just keep me as your bedchamber maid instead?" Grace said sweetly and sensibly. "I really don’t mind."

"I do mind."

"Huh?"

"Quiet." Evan Xiao pressed her head into his chest and went back to reading his official documents.

Grace breathed in his scent, listened to his heartbeat, and was overwhelmed with joy, disbelief, and a bit of confusion.

Evan Xiao wants to marry her?

Not taking her in as a concubine, and definitely not as a bedchamber maid—he actually wants to marry her?

Surprise after surprise, but it also feels like too much to handle...

Honestly, just being his bedchamber maid would be fine.

As long as she gets what she wants, she can make a quick getaway.

Marrying her? That’s way too much pressure...

Evan Xiao held her like it was second nature, and once he had her in his arms, he just wouldn’t let go.

By noon, he even said he wanted to eat with her.

Grace just wanted some alone time, so she politely declined and went back to the maid’s quarters.

The lunch was ready on the other side too. Lühé and Alan had prepared the food and were just waiting for her.

She sat down absentmindedly, picked up her purple bamboo chopsticks, when Lühé suddenly said, "Captain Guo is so pitiful! I don’t even know what he did wrong, but he’s being kicked out just like that."

"Yeah!" Alan chimed in with sympathy. "The look on his face just now—he seemed so heartbroken... sigh!"

"What are you talking about?" Grace asked, confused. "I saw Captain Guo this morning! When did he get kicked out?"

"You’ve been serving the General all morning, so you probably didn’t hear," Lühé explained. "Just now, he should be saying goodbye to the guards!"

Grace’s eyes changed, and she suddenly jumped up and ran out.

She rushed to the guards’ barracks, just in time to see Guo Jin with a big bundle on his back, waving goodbye to the guards with a gloomy face before leaving the General’s mansion.

He’s really being kicked out!

For a Spirit Practitioner, being kicked out by your master is a devastating blow!

He might never be accepted by another powerful family again.

Grace spun around and ran straight back to Evan Xiao’s room.

Evan Xiao had just taken off his clothes, getting ready for a nap.

So when Grace barged in, he was only in his inner garments.

"What’s wrong?" Evan Xiao squinted at her, seeing how flustered she was.

"Did Lü Xin tell you that Captain Guo said he wanted to marry me this morning?" Grace asked, getting straight to the point.

Evan Xiao gave her a dangerous look and didn’t answer.

"He saved my life and helped me out. He’s a good guy! He only said those things because he didn’t know about us! He didn’t do anything wrong! Can you please not kick him out?"

"He didn’t do anything wrong?" Evan Xiao’s voice was downright scary. "So you mean I’m the one at fault?"

"No! What I mean is, he didn’t know I liked you! He confessed to me, which is normal—he wasn’t trying to offend you... You kicked out my savior, and now I just... don’t know how to face this..."
