Shadow, If You Want Me to Save Someone Come to Feng Manor
When a group of people who want you dead suddenly insist on keeping you alive, it almost always means you still have some value to exploit.
Serena Feng couldn’t imagine what, besides her medical skills, was worth these seven black-clad men sparing her life.
Once she figured this out, Serena felt no fear. She knew they wouldn’t kill her, so she stood her ground as the black-clad man’s sword stabbed toward her heart, her eyes flashing with mocking amusement.
"You... filthy woman!" As expected, seeing Serena neither dodge nor flinch, the attacker had to pull back his sword at the last moment, twisting his wrist to stab at the horse instead.
"Miss, be careful—run!" The black-clad man moved fast, but Serena’s dark-guard maids weren’t weak either. As he shifted, they charged forward. By the time he redirected his sword, they’d already blocked his attack.
With a sharp clang, not only Serena, but even the carriage horse remained unharmed.
The driver reacted instantly—he cut the reins, whipped the horse, and sent it galloping off. He knew Serena’s riding skills were superb; with her abilities, she could easily leap onto its back.
The horse was already spooked, and with that whip it bolted like its life depended on it. Serena knew this was her chance; under the cover of her dark-guard maids, she grabbed her pistol and charged forward.
"Stop her!" The black-clad man fighting Serena’s maids barked an order to the other six.
The six behind him moved like puppets on strings. With a single order, they surged forward as one, charging at Serena with lightning speed.
"Damn it." Serena muttered a curse and fired her pistol behind her.
At this range, with such a clear target, Serena didn’t even need to aim—nor did she have time. She shot by instinct, firing at a vital spot.
Bang—
The bullet shot out of the barrel, but didn’t hit as she’d hoped; it only forced the attacker to stumble back several steps.
"Of course, the more you use it, the less special it gets." Serena wasn’t annoyed; she’d expected this outcome.
A pistol in this era was just another hidden weapon—the only difference was its greater range and killing power. As long as her enemies were alert, dodging it wasn’t that hard.
Missing wasn’t a problem. With Serena wasting bullets, she still forced the enemy to fall back, buying herself time to escape. But...
The horse had already vanished. Serena sprinted after it, hoping to catch even a glimpse—otherwise, running all the way back to Feng Manor would be pure torture.
Serena had explosive speed, but as a woman she had one fatal weakness: endurance. After just two streets, the black-clad men caught up to her.
"Serena Feng, come quietly and you’ll keep your life."
Serena couldn’t see their faces, but she could see the madness in their eyes. These seven black-clad men looked like they’d crawled out of hell itself—bloodshed gave them pleasure. Even if she survived, falling into their hands would mean a fate worse than death.
Maybe they didn’t want her dead right now, but what about later? Serena hadn’t forgotten how they tried to burn her alive in Easestream City. Once she lost her value, she’d be finished. Without hesitation, she pressed her pistol to her own forehead.
"Don’t come any closer! If you do, I’ll kill myself." Serena felt ridiculous threatening suicide, but these men actually bought it.
Sure enough, the black-clad men didn’t dare move forward. Their eyes, cold as vipers, locked onto Serena. "Serena Feng, don’t do anything stupid."
"I’m not being stupid. You know I’m not exactly afraid of death." In truth, she was terrified.
The black-clad man took a deep breath, suppressing his killing intent. "Serena Feng, we don’t want to kill you. We need you to save someone."
"I understand. Bring the patient to Feng Manor—I’ll save them." Serena didn’t refuse outright. She knew exactly where her value lay; if she refused, they’d kill her on the spot.
"No." The black-clad man rejected her instantly, but Serena didn’t back down. "I’ll only save them if you bring them to Feng Manor. That’s where I have the equipment I need. You came looking for me, so you should’ve done your homework. You can’t provide the tools I require—the surgery hut at Feng Manor is your only option."
If they’d come for her here, it meant their patient was probably dying. Otherwise, they wouldn’t risk exposing themselves by ambushing her inside the Capital. But if she went with them, whether or not she saved their dying man, she’d be dead either way.
There were plenty of reasons, but the most important was that they’d already tried to kill her—and she knew too much.
The black-clad man fell silent, his gaze shifting to study Serena. She stood poised and fearless, but her pistol hand was slick with sweat, silently praying for that bastard Zuo An to hurry up—if her gun misfired, she was finished.
The standoff froze the air. Serena could hear her own heartbeat—thump, thump, thump—loud and fast. She didn’t dare move, not even blink, afraid that one slip would mean capture.
There were countless ways to make a person’s life worse than death. Serena refused to end up that way.
The black-clad men kept their eyes locked on Serena, waiting for her to falter, to panic. But as time passed, she showed no weakness. Their leader was absent, and the six hesitated—after a long wait with no opening, they glanced at each other, hoping someone had a better idea.
At that moment, a black shadow suddenly shot out behind Serena. One moment he was far away; the next, he was blocking her from the attackers.
A flash of cyan sword-light traced a beautiful arc before the six men. No words, just a flurry of deadly attacks—every strike aimed to kill.
"Careful!" The black-clad men knew this was no ordinary opponent. They braced themselves, back to back, guarding their rear with absolute vigilance—no openings at all.
Linked together, the six couldn’t defeat the shadow, but he couldn’t break their defense either.
"Whew... finally." Serena lowered her pistol, her gun hand trembling uncontrollably.
She was brave and far more experienced than most women, but she was still human. Being targeted by six crazed killers would terrify anyone. Luckily, Zuo An had arrived—the crisis was over.
The six black-clad men tangled with Zuo An, their seven figures darting and shifting in a blur. Serena tried several times to find a shot, but couldn’t risk hitting the wrong target—so she holstered her pistol and ran.
Staying would only make her a burden. These men were here for her; once she escaped, they’d likely disengage—the Capital was no place for a drawn-out fight.
Serena felt no guilt, abandoning her dark-guard maids and Zuo An as she sprinted toward Feng Manor. Whether there were other dangers on the way didn’t matter—anything was safer than staying here.
"Quick, Serena Feng is running!"
From a distance, Serena could still hear the black-clad men’s furious shouts.
"Stop fighting this guy—go after Serena Feng!"
"Our target is Serena Feng! Don’t waste time!"
