Heartscale

Evan Xiao could tell—she was treating him like that python she’d run into in the Eastern Wilderness Forest.

They, the Dragon Clan, are divine beings—why would they eat ordinary birds or beasts?

He felt pretty annoyed and bared his teeth at her again.

But Grace didn’t feel so afraid of him anymore.

All he did was bare his teeth—he didn’t actually bite.

Sure enough, he just bared his teeth again and did nothing else.

"Divine Dragon, sir—Achoo!" Even though the weather wasn’t cold, the water in the pool was freezing. She couldn’t help but sneeze.

After sneezing, she continued, "Legend says dragons are divine beings—so why are you stuck in this tiny pool? Don’t tell me… you’ve lost your powers and got trapped here?"

The dragon ignored her and just tightened its coils around her.

It even rested its head beside her and closed its eyes.

Grace looked at him with a troubled expression.

Why is he sleeping now?

Is he planning to eat me after he wakes up?

Just then, the previously cold body of the Divine Dragon began to warm up, becoming cozy and toasty.

Grace was stunned—how did it suddenly get warm?

It felt so comfortable…

Feeling so comfortable, Grace found herself oddly less afraid.

She started to feel curious about him.

He’s a dragon, after all!

The Dragon Clan, Phoenix Clan, and Qilin Clan—rumor has it, they’re the three great divine clans of this world.

Some even say that this entire continent is actually ruled by the three great divine clans.

But for Grace, it was just a legend.

She’d only ever seen images of the divine clans in books.

This was her first time seeing a real dragon—it looked just like the drawings in the books: antler-like horns, a camel-like head, and a snake-like neck.

But its face was far more beautiful than those fierce dragon heads in the illustrations…

She couldn’t resist—she reached out and touched one of his dragon scales. It was as big as a soup bowl and gleamed with a deep, inky shine.

According to the books, dragon scales aren’t just premium weapon materials—they’re also a miraculous medicine that can cure any poison.

Cure any poison, huh!

If only she could pry one off and take it home…

Just as she was thinking that, she suddenly noticed a dragon scale under its chin that looked like it was about to fall off.

She sneaked a glance at the sleeping Divine Dragon and thought, With so many scales on a dragon, losing one or two shouldn’t matter, right?

Thinking this, she reached out, gently and slowly plucked off that scale.

“Aargh!” Evan Xiao suddenly let out a low roar and opened his eyes.

Then he saw… Lily Bai holding his Heartscale, staring at him in shock.

She actually pulled off his Heartscale!

She. Actually. Pulled. Off. His. Heartscale!!

Dragons can have many concubines, but in their whole lives, they can only marry one official wife.

For male dragons, the Heartscale—a special scale under the chin—serves as the token of love given to their wife. (In dragon lore, only the destined wife can remove this scale safely.)

It belongs to his wife.

And only his destined wife can remove the Heartscale.

If anyone tried to forcefully remove it, his divine power would lash out in retaliation—death or serious injury would be certain.

But now, Lily Bai actually pulled it off!

Could Lily Bai be his destined wife?

How is that possible?

He was a noble and illustrious member of the divine clan.

His lifespan stretched for tens of thousands of years, maybe even longer.

And Lily Bai? What was she?

She was just a human!

And a useless one at that, without even a spirit root!

Her lifespan was only a few decades!

She was so fragile, she couldn’t even withstand a single breath of dragon fire!

There was no guarantee she could even bear his children!

What in the world was going on?

It must be because he was downgraded to a mere Spirit Practitioner!

His Heartscale was snatched by Lily Bai while he was weak!

Snatched while he was down!
