The Final Measure

12/15/2025

The rumbling continued endlessly as a suffocating ghostly aura filled the air. The Wraithlord raised both hands high, while Zachary Justice had already charged forward ahead of everyone.

In an instant, all of us surged forward. With a buzz, I sensed something shift and, harnessing the power of causality, teleported directly behind the Wraithlord, pressing my hand to his spine. The others were struck by a powerful force and sent flying backward, but only Zachary Justice pierced through the barrier, his sword stabbing straight into the Wraithlord's chest.

Accompanied by the shrill cries of eagles, the Death Curse transformed into dozens of black eagles swirling overhead. These eagles quickly devoured the ghostly aura released by the Wraithlord. Zachary Justice's sword pierced through the Wraithlord's chest, while the blood-red swastika I branded onto his spine began to take effect.

A sizzling sound echoed as the Wraithlord merely smiled faintly.

"Everyone, get back!"

Quentin Kue shouted loudly. In an instant, barriers of red light rose before our eyes. With a thunderous crash, as the Wraithlord's ghostly form perished, the ghostly aura exploded. Quentin Kue's spell barriers shattered instantly. I felt a wave of dizziness as the blast struck me—everyone seemed on the verge of drowning in the ghostly miasma.

"It's not time to die yet."

The Wraithlord approached from afar once more, his body freshly restored and power undiminished. He lunged at all of us with a grasping motion. Zachary Justice glanced at me and charged again. Suddenly, Kane appeared behind the Wraithlord in a swirl of rising smoke, clamping both arms around him. Being composed entirely of Yin Energy, Kane was largely unaffected by the intense ghostly aura released by the Wraithlord.

"Now!"

I roared. At that moment, the entire apartment building was coated in a faint layer of black, flickering in and out of existence as if about to vanish.

"How unfortunate."

The Wraithlord spoke. In an instant, the Ghost Painting Book Immortal touched the tip of his brush to the Wraithlord's chest. The Wraithlord broke free from restraint, tearing Kane's arms off. Zachary Justice's sword reached the Wraithlord's eyes again, but this time failed to break through. The Wraithlord's flesh began to burn as I appeared above him, raising both hands and channeling streams of white energy downward.

Amid the clicking of a camera, Cao Wanzhi snapped photos with his Ghost Weapon. Just a moment was enough to seal the Wraithlord's movements, severing his connection to this world. Layers of glass-colored barriers appeared all around as Victor Duan began to use his powers.

The Wraithlord kept smiling. Black eagles swooped down from the sky as Zhang Jizheng, his body glowing with golden light, surged forward.

"I told you already, don't even think about it."

With a furious roar from the Wraithlord, I sensed something and instantly lunged toward the apartment building. At its rooftop stood another Wraithlord, grinning viciously and raising his fist. It was too late—a streak of pale blue energy swept past the Wraithlord, instantly binding him. Eugenia had used the last of her strength to restrain the Wraithlord temporarily. I charged forward and punched through the Wraithlord's body, sending him flying as a deafening explosion erupted behind me.

As I turned my head, the Wraithlord I had struck was already caught in the explosion.

"I am the world, and the world is me. You have not the slightest chance of victory."

Suddenly, multiple Wraithlords appeared in the sky, their numbers multiplying until dozens surrounded us with ghostly bodies. Those still reeling from the explosion stared in shock. The Earth Soul had fallen into the apartment building, in dire condition. Zachary Justice stood silently at the center, his sword shattered and scattered.

"It's over."

My eyes widened as I charged forward. Golden light burst forth, and Wraithlords attacked from all directions. I felt a violent tremor—my consciousness began to slip away.

"If human methods can't destroy him, then we have to shift our perspective and consider other options."

In a daze, I snapped awake. Before me was a face with crimson eyes, no cheeks, and star-like specks—a vision of Infernal Will.

"So, you're still here."

I spoke, seeing Infernal Will's eyes brimming with amusement.

"Your so-called last resort does nothing to the Wraithlord. Even if you use all your strength against him, it only hastens your own death. Lan Ruoxi can't leave either—since the beginning, the Wraithlord's instincts have blanketed the world. You must already know this deep down."

I sat down as Infernal Will approached me.

"What did you mean just now?"

I looked up, dazed, at Infernal Will.

"Exactly what I said. If humanity can't solve him, or if brute force is meaningless, then what will you do?"

I gazed into the surrounding darkness—it was just like our situation now. No matter what we tried, nothing could break through. There was no light at all.

"If you've thought it through, use the power of Infernal Will. It's the only way."

I smiled at Infernal Will.

"If we defeat the Wraithlord, won't we just have to face Infernal Will next?"

"Does it make a difference?"

I shook my head and stood up as Infernal Will burst into hearty laughter.

"I'll only say this once—whether you use it is up to you. I won't force you. The only way to defeat the Wraithlord is to consume him."

My eyes widened as Infernal Will's eyes glowed with excited red light. He laughed.

"The Wraithlord's three souls and seven spirits are indestructible. When Mother Goddess Nuwa gave him this power, it was set in stone. The only way is to consume the Wraithlord's three souls and seven spirits. But if your will is weaker than his, you'll be the one consumed instead. It's your only option, and ours as well. Even if you overpower the Wraithlord's will, the one who ultimately gains control... will be me. This time, I won't hesitate—I will consume the human will within me named Zhang Qingyuan."

"There's no other way!"

Infernal Will nodded, laughing heartily.

"It seems you've made up your mind. I'll grant you a little mercy—wait a few centuries before acting against the Yin-Yang World. Consider it my way of honoring my past humanity. After all, it will take time to fully digest the Wraithlord's three souls and seven spirits."

I looked at Infernal Will and nodded. I could sense he wouldn't deceive me, because this will was my own.

"Any last wishes?"

Infernal Will asked. I shook my head, though I hesitated briefly. I reached out and retrieved the half-restored Starwatcher from my body. This sword could never be destroyed, but now it was useless against the Wraithlord. His current ghostly form wasn't made from illusions, but from countless ghosts of the Yin-Yang World.

Yet, no matter how fragile it seemed, its power was genuine.

A streak of black lightning flashed as a ball of black electricity crackled before me.

"This instinct will remain in the Earth Soul's body. If you have any final words, say them now—it's farewell."

I grunted in response.
