Wrathwood

Wrathwood.

Wrathwood is a fairly well-known place in the Quadrant Immortal Continent. Its fame does not come from its name, nor from the abundance of immortal spirit herbs found here.

There is only one reason Wrathwood is famous: this forest contains nothing but a single species of tree—the Wrathroot Tree.

If it were only the Wrathroot Tree, it wouldn’t be so strange. What’s peculiar is that these trees require no soil and no other support—their only foundation is the void itself.

A Wrathroot Tree can grow alone in the void, its root system incredibly vast. Once the roots extend, they resemble countless strange, angry spears crisscrossing in all directions.

That’s just one Wrathroot Tree. If countless Wrathroot Trees grow together, they form an endless web of gigantic roots. These roots intertwine in the void, creating a world of their own—no soil required.

Wrathwood is a forest formed by countless Wrathroot Trees. The forest is surrounded on all sides by void, and beneath it, endless Wrathroot Tree roots are intertwined together.

Wrathwood spans millions of square kilometers, and apart from the Wrathroot Tree, there is not a single other plant within its borders.

At this moment, Joe Di stood at the edge of Wrathwood, gazing at the tangled, bizarre roots of the Wrathroot Trees, his scalp tingling with unease.

So many roots intertwined together looked like countless thick, giant earthworms. Anyone with trypophobia would never dare set foot here.

Even cultivators with nerves of steel would feel uneasy standing atop these roots in Wrathwood, worrying that once deep inside, the roots might suddenly lash out and swallow them, erasing their existence.

After all, Wrathwood covers millions of square kilometers and contains no other living creatures. It’s hard not to wonder if every trace of life has been devoured by the Wrathroot Trees.

Joe Di didn’t linger. After a brief observation, he strode straight into the depths of Wrathwood.

The area where Wrathwood grows forms a natural prohibition against flight. Within this domain, nothing and no one is permitted to fly over the forest.

But this restriction applies only to others. For Joe Di, flying through Wrathwood wouldn’t be all that difficult if he chose to force his way.

His Rending Law technique could tear apart the flight prohibition created by the Wrathroot Trees in this realm.

But Joe Di saw no need for that. Besides, he’d heard of the Wrathroot Tree before. Since Xing Jing’ang’s marker was located somewhere within Wrathwood, he wanted to explore what made this forest so unique.

Joe Di didn’t believe in reckless bravado. He wasn’t bold—just confident that Wrathwood posed no threat to him.

If Wrathwood posed even the slightest danger, Joe Di would have taken other precautions—like unleashing Dao Fire to burn the area clean, or setting up a teleportation array outside as a backup.

After walking for just an hour and venturing deeper into Wrathwood, Joe Di sensed something amiss beneath his feet—the roots of the Wrathroot Trees began to shift.

The roots beneath his feet seemed to come alive, writhing beneath his soles.

Most cultivators would have immediately retreated at this point, but Joe Di pressed onward, unfazed, sticking to his original plan.

A harsh, grating sound—worse than grinding teeth—filled the air. Joe Di immediately sensed the endless roots beneath him turning soft and writhing, like rotten pig intestines, then surging toward him in a sweeping wave.

The air was thick with a putrid stench, and every escape technique seemed to be sealed off by this space, which was saturated with death and destruction.

Joe Di possessed both the Elemental Veil and Mindshift techniques. Even if the Wrathroot Trees sealed off the area, he could still escape using his Rending Law technique.

Yet Joe Di had no intention of doing so. He knew the Wrathroot Trees would not tolerate outsiders, and his goal was simply to pass through, not to harm them.

But the Wrathroot Trees’ reaction left him deeply irritated. Dao Fire seeped from beneath his feet, instantly forming a blaze that spread outward from Joe Di, rapidly expanding in all directions.

In mere moments, the Wrathroot Trees in this area were reduced to nothing by the Dao Fire. With its power, Joe Di could burn all of Wrathwood to ashes in no time if he wished.

Wrathwood had existed in this void for countless years, and naturally possessed a certain spiritual intelligence. The moment Joe Di unleashed his terrifying Dao Fire, every Wrathroot Tree in the forest sensed the threat. Instinctively, they realized that Joe Di could incinerate Wrathwood in a matter of moments.

The roots that had been surging toward Joe Di now retreated at an even greater speed, a pleading aura emanating from them, begging him to withdraw his Dao Fire and spare the Wrathroot Trees from further burning.

Joe Di didn’t mind. He withdrew his Dao Fire and said calmly, “Just this once. If you provoke me a second time, I’ll erase every Wrathroot Tree here.”

He hadn’t wiped them out because this land truly belonged to the Wrathroot Trees—he was merely passing through. The first offense he could forgive, but if there was a second, he wouldn’t hesitate to burn it all to ashes.

Millions of square kilometers might seem vast, but to Joe Di, it wasn’t much at all.

Sure enough, after Joe Di spoke, a wave of gratitude emanated from the surrounding Wrathroot Trees.

To Joe Di’s surprise, as he continued forward, the tangled Wrathroot Trees before him transformed into a broad, smooth path.

Joe Di was quite pleased. It seemed the Wrathroot Trees possessed a certain intelligence and even knew how to show gratitude.

With Xing Jing’ang’s Direction Sphere and the broad path provided, Joe Di could move much faster.

In just over half an hour, Joe Di arrived at the location indicated by Xing Jing’ang’s Direction Sphere. However, he didn’t seek out a weak void node—instead, his attention was drawn to a house made from tree roots.

To call it a house wasn’t quite accurate—Joe Di could sense two cultivators inside, struggling for their lives. They had summoned magical treasures to form a protective space, but that space was already wrapped tightly by endless Wrathroot Tree roots.

Joe Di occasionally glimpsed flashes of flame between the roots, clearly conjured by the two trapped cultivators.

But their flames were worlds apart from Joe Di’s Dao Fire. Burning away all the Wrathroot Tree roots was beyond them; even clearing the roots around their protective space was a struggle.

“Let them go.” Joe Di said casually, out of respect for fellow cultivators.

The surrounding Wrathroot Trees clearly held Joe Di in awe. At his simple command, all the roots enveloping this section of the void withdrew in mere moments.

With the roots gone, two pale-faced women appeared before Joe Di. He recognized both: one was Yannette Hui, the founding ancestor of the Puregate Sect—a supreme powerhouse.

The other, even more closely connected to Joe Di, was Moria Lane, a disciple of the Puregate Sect. Her cultivation had reached the late Immortal King stage, testament to the solid foundation Joe Di had laid for her. If not for his help, even with her pure spiritual body, she could never have advanced so quickly.

"It’s you?" Yannette Hui stared at Joe Di in astonishment, as if bewildered that he was still alive.

From her expression, Joe Di could tell that the old Daoist nun knew nothing of his exploits in Cauldron Haven. Apparently, after she left the city with Moria Lane, she’d never returned.

Moria Lane, on the other hand, was overcome with joy and excitement—tears glimmered at the corners of her eyes.
