Passing By Each Other

Rainbow Court Mistress Rainveil and her companions searched the nearby villages for dozens of days but still found no trace of Old Goldwing and Shadow, growing increasingly anxious. With the sect left unguarded, unexpected trouble could easily arise.

Mistress, searching like this won’t work. We can’t check every villager one by one. I think we should spread the word and let them come to us instead—it might actually work.

I’ve considered that too. But how do we make sure they know we’re looking for them? And will they even dare to come out and meet us?

That shouldn’t be hard. If they’re hiding among people, it must be for a special reason. If we play to that, they’ll have to come out. Besides, Mistress, your divine sense is powerful enough to scan everyone—tedious, but effective.

Let’s spread the word: Evan Chu is searching for his brothers Shadow and Old Goldwing. Anyone with information gets 1,000 God Stones or 10,000 Violet Cloud Crystals. Anyone who brings them directly will be rewarded with 5,000 God Stones and 5,000 Violet Cloud Crystals. We’ll wait in an ordinary town for a while.

An elder quickly left to spread the news as Elena instructed. “Let’s go. Hopefully this time we’ll get results. If not, we’ll have to wait for Evan to finish his seclusion—he should be able to sense them easily thanks to their Soul Contracts.”

The so-called town was home to only a few hundred thousand people—tiny by God Realm standards, where even a second-tier city has millions. Here, a God-King would be considered a top expert, respected by all.

Of course, if someone like Rainbow Court Mistress Rainveil appeared, she’d be a godlike figure—someone to worship or revere. In a remote border town like this, such beings simply don’t exist.

Border towns have their own style—there’s always a city gate with guards, and everyone pays a small entry fee. As the saying goes, even a tiny sparrow has all its organs.

The entry fee was low, just five Violet Cloud Crystals. The guards, only at Heavenly God level, watched as Elena Rainveil handed one a mid-grade Violet Cloud Crystal—a fortune here. The guard stared at them like they were monsters.

Especially the aura they unconsciously released—it was suffocating. No one dared offend them, and the guard hesitated to accept the crystal, stammering, “You don’t need to pay any entry fee, honored ones. Please, just enter the city.”

Elena Rainveil smiled, “Take it. Don’t waste words. You’ve got good bones—maybe you’ll make something of yourself. Work hard!”

“Thank you for your guidance, senior! I’ll work hard!” The guard was stunned, feeling honored to be noticed.

Soon Elena and her group arrived at the town’s largest inn—probably the best in this border town, though even the lowest-grade inn in Rainbow City would be far superior.

The sharp-eyed waiter hurried over. “Honored guests, are you here for food or lodging? This is the best inn in town—you’ll be satisfied for sure!”

One elder ordered several upper rooms and the inn’s best food and wine, warning, “Don’t ask questions or spread rumors, or you might die without knowing why.”

The waiter couldn’t gauge their strength, but sensed they could kill him with a thought. “Understood! I understand!” he stammered, trembling.

Elena’s group found a quiet corner to sit. A sweep of her divine sense showed the strongest person in the inn was only mid-stage God-Lord—an ant before her.

Soon, food and wine arrived—ordinary fare by their standards, but Elena decided not to be picky and went along with local customs.

Midway through the meal, the elder who’d gone to spread the news returned. “Mistress, it’s all arranged. If they’re here, someone should come soon—the reward is generous.”

Elena sighed, “Let’s hope so. Otherwise we’ll have to keep searching elsewhere. Poison Maiden Tia is truly vicious—one day I’ll make her die a miserable death.”

As she spoke, a trace of killing intent unconsciously leaked from Elena. For a late-stage God-Venerable, even a flicker of killing aura could suffocate everyone present.

Everyone in the inn felt as if they’d fallen into an ice cellar, suffocated by an invisible pressure. Some sweated as though dying—this was just a hint of her killing intent, but in real combat it could kill outright.

Realizing her slip, Elena quickly retracted her aura. The oppressive feeling vanished, but many patrons left pale-faced, and only a few remained.

The innkeeper and waiter were even more stunned. The arrival of such terrifying figures meant something big was happening. If this weren’t their own business, they might have fled long ago.

Now they resolved to serve these guests perfectly, not daring to breathe loudly for fear of losing their lives—their shock was overwhelming.

After eating, Elena and her group retired to their rooms to wait for news. Within half a day, word of the bounty spread across the town, driving many mad with greed.

Rumors about the peerless experts staying at the inn circulated widely, heightening the town’s tension. But no one knew who Shadow and Old Goldwing really were, so the reward slipped through their fingers.

From her room, Elena unfurled her divine sense, scanning every person in town. As a late-stage God-Venerable, she could easily spot disguised divine beasts, but after searching for a long time, she found nothing and grew disappointed.

In reality, Shadow and Old Goldwing were indeed connected to the town, living there in human form as hired guardians. By sheer bad luck, they’d left the day before Elena arrived—a cruel near-miss that cost her precious time.
