Mesa City

Lowering his head, Landon Lu suddenly pressed his lips fiercely against Donna Dong’s moist little mouth, making her let out a muffled “mmph mmph” sound.

After a moment, Landon let her go, looking at Donna Dong—her breath a little ragged, her face flushed—and teased, “Now do you understand what I’ll do to you?”

“Landon Lu, you jerk!”

Donna Dong shoved Landon away and ran out of his room.

As soon as Donna Dong got back to her own room, she flopped onto the bed and buried her head under the blanket, mortified—mortified! That jerk actually dared to force a kiss on me, and even slipped his tongue in…

Just thinking about that forced kiss and how it felt made her cheeks burn and her heart race.

Knock knock!

The sound of knocking came from the door.

Could it be that Landon Lu came to apologize? Hmph, I definitely can't let him off easy. He has to cook for me—no, one meal's not enough, at least two! Actually, two is way too cheap for him... Ten meals!

Knock knock!!

The spaceship was oval-shaped, and this one could hold nearly twenty thousand people. So there were dozens of exits on board—otherwise, if they only opened one or two, it’d take forever for everyone to get off.

Compared to the spaceport on the Homeworld, this one was way more bare-bones.

After leaving the terminal, Landon Lu hopped into a skycar and headed out.

This time, he was reporting to Mesa City—a place built less than half a year ago, with just over 300,000 Federal citizens and more than 800,000 native residents.

He was going to Mesa City to serve directly as acting Special Police Minister.

If he performed well, the 'acting' would be dropped and his rank bumped up to lieutenant colonel.

But if he messed up, after three years he'd have to pack up and leave in disgrace.

Two hours later.

A skycar carried Landon into Mesa City.

Compared to Plumridge City, this newly built Mesa City looked much more desolate and rough. You could hardly see a single skycar in the air.

After paying the fare, Landon picked up his luggage and walked toward the gate of the Mesa City Special Police Base.

"Stop. Please show your documents and Identity Card," the guard at the gate barked.

Landon produced his ID and documents. After checking them, the two guards became extremely respectful—the young man before them was going to be their new boss.

In terms of size, the Mesa City Special Police Base was even bigger than Plumridge’s, but as Landon walked in, he barely saw anyone around.

At last, he reached the administrative building. There was a guard at the door.

"What do you want?" the middle-aged guard asked lazily.

"Reporting in," Landon replied.

"So you’re the new guy." The guard pointed to the window on the right just inside the door. "Go register over there."

"Alright." Landon nodded and walked to the window. Inside sat a middle-aged woman in a Special Police uniform, currently playing a game.

"What do you want?" The woman quickly closed the game and asked, a bit impatient.

"Reporting in," Landon answered succinctly.

The woman frowned. "I didn’t get any notice about someone reporting in today. What’s your name?"

"Landon Lu," Landon replied.

Hearing the name, the woman felt a faint sense of familiarity. Then it hit her, and she jumped up in a panic, staring at Landon. "You... You’re the new Minister Lu—Landon Lu?"

"That’s me!" Landon nodded.

"Ah!"

The woman let out a startled cry, then bowed deeply to Landon. "Sorry, Minister Lu! I swear I’ll never play games on duty again."

"Don’t let it happen again," Landon said sternly.

"Thank you, Minister Lu." The woman breathed a sigh of relief.

"What should I call you?" Landon asked.

"My name’s Maggie Ma. If you don’t mind, just call me Sister Ma!"

"Sure, Sister Ma. Do you know which floor my office is on? Can you show me the way?"

"Of course! Minister, right this way!"

The Minister’s office was on the fifth floor of the administrative building, and it was a suite—already cleaned and tidied up.

On the way, Landon asked Sister Ma about the situation at the Special Police Base.

First off, Mesa City Special Police Base had 327 Special Police, including 54 civilian staff like Sister Ma.

With just over 200 officers managing a city of nearly a million people, it was impossible. So the government let them hire locals as auxiliary police to help keep order.

According to Sister Ma, there were now about 500 auxiliary police. Even so, they were still short-handed.

Besides that, the Special Police Base had two deputy ministers, since the minister’s post had been vacant until now.

One deputy was Helen Lu, a civilian. She was over fifty, and unless something came up, she rarely showed up at the base.

The other deputy was Gordon Gao, just over forty, a ninth-level Warrior and a real old oil slick—great at handling people.

Below them were five battalion captains and five deputy captains.

But none of the five Special Police battalions were at full strength.

News of the new minister’s arrival spread fast. In less than twenty minutes, Gordon Gao showed up in Landon’s office.

Soon after, the five battalion captains and their deputies all came to report in to Landon.

Only Helen Lu, the deputy minister, was nowhere to be seen.

Landon didn’t mind. He brewed a cup of tea and handed it to Gordon. "Old Gao, I’m new here and don’t know much about the place. I’ll be counting on you a lot."

"Minister Lu, you can ask me anything. I promise I’ll tell you everything I know!" Gordon patted his chest, but deep down, he still looked down on Landon.
