Does Lily Know
Sophie White saw Alexander Hayes's expression and knew he was truly angry, so she reluctantly apologized to Dr. Rowan Lin.
Dr. Rowan Lin waited until Sophie finished apologizing, then snorted and said, "You cursed Mrs. Penny for a whole hour. If you want to apologize, it should be to her—not to me."
Sophie White was fuming inside, thinking, You could've said that earlier! I just finished apologizing and now you tell me it should've been to Mrs. Penny!?
You old geezer, you're just out to get me!
Dr. Rowan Lin glanced at Sophie White, instantly seeing her frustrated, unwilling look, but pretended not to notice at all.
Sophie White whimpered in pain and said to Alexander Hayes, "Alex, my wound's been treated. Please take me back to the Prince of Qin's Manor."
Dr. Rowan Lin's eyes flickered. He thought, This little vixen keeps calling my son-in-law 'Alex' so sweetly, and now she wants to stay at the Prince of Qin's Manor?
No way!
Before Alexander Hayes could say anything, Dr. Rowan Lin interjected, "Miss White's wound has just been treated. She shouldn't be moved. She'll recover here."
Alexander Hayes breathed a sigh of relief. He hadn't wanted to take Sophie White back to the Prince of Qin's Manor anyway.
Lily Evans was still in confinement after childbirth. If she found out Alexander Hayes brought a woman back to the manor—even if he explained that Sophie White was the orphaned daughter of a deceased friend—he worried Lily’s mood might spiral.
Now that Dr. Rowan Lin had volunteered to keep Sophie White at his residence, it saved Alexander Hayes a huge headache. Otherwise, he’d have had to send Sophie to stay temporarily at Clearwater Academy across from the manor.
But Sophie White was absolutely unwilling. She protested, "Alex, you moved into the Prince of Qin's Manor and I haven’t even seen it yet! Why can’t I stay at your place?"
Dr. Rowan Lin snorted, "Miss White, do you not understand human language, or just refuse kindness? Your wound was just stitched up—move around and it’ll split open, and I’ll have to clean it up all over again. If it festers and rots, don’t come crying to me!"
Sophie White looked up at Dr. Rowan Lin, seeing nothing but threat written all over his face.
Sophie remembered the agony of getting her wound treated—it was like losing half her life! If she had to go through that again, she’d never survive.
So after thinking it over, Sophie White caved, grumbling, "Fine, I’ll stay here and recover. Alex, I don’t know anyone here—I’m counting on you! You’d better visit me every day!"
Alexander Hayes soothed her, "Sophie, just focus on getting better. Dr. Rowan Lin will take good care of you."
After speaking, Dr. Rowan Lin shot Alexander Hayes a look and then walked out.
Alexander Hayes settled Sophie White in, then followed him out.
"Father." Alexander Hayes stood respectfully behind Dr. Rowan Lin.
Dr. Rowan Lin grunted, "What’s the story with this girl? Why haven’t you ever mentioned her before?"
Alexander Hayes answered openly, "Father, Sophie’s family died for the country, but due to various reasons, they were labeled traitors and have never been cleared. So Sophie has had to live in hiding. Her father entrusted her to me before he died. I raised her in secret with the Hayes Regiment at the Frontier Outpost, and her identity can’t be revealed. If it ever came out, she’d be branded a fugitive from a traitor’s clan. It’d be a disaster."
Dr. Rowan Lin stroked his chin, seeing nothing but honesty in Alexander’s eyes. "So that’s how it is... Does Lily know about this?"
