Growing Greenhouse Vegetables
Shen Yan was still a bit dazed, nodding and lowering his voice: "Who would've thought a man as handsome as Lucky could be found in this countryside? Lucky looks just like the top courtesan my cousin kept at Qingge House! Hao-ge, you've seen that courtesan too? Don't tell me you swing that way!"
"Get outta here! I'm a man who likes women!" Li Yanhao spat and slapped Shen Yan aside.
Shen Yan was confused and tipsy again. His head lolled to the side and he fell asleep, leaving Li Yanhao both amused and exasperated.
Li Yanhao had wanted Shen Yan, who'd seen Xiao Zetian before, to take a look at Lucky and see if he could spot anything unusual. Who knew Shen Yan would be so unreliable and pull a stunt like this.
Over the next few days, Lily Evans was constantly running to the fields, so busy her feet barely touched the ground.
The commotion in Lily's fields caused quite a stir in the village. No one understood why her family would start planting things right before winter, wondering if everything would just freeze to death when the cold came.
Because it was all so unusual, idle villagers often wandered over to Lily's fields to see what was going on. They saw rows and rows of strange things in the Mushroom House, but no one knew what they were.
Lily was confident in her mushroom cellar techniques. The soil needed for mushroom cultivation was very special—she and Bai Lu had spent days preparing the perfect substrate. Even if others saw it, they couldn't copy it. And as for selecting mushroom spawn, only Lily could do it; Bai Lu just knew how to care for the mushrooms.
So with the core mushroom-growing techniques firmly in her grasp, Lily wasn't worried about secrets leaking. Off-season greenhouse vegetables might look simple, but they're actually tricky—humidity, temperature, and sunlight all matter. People could watch all they want, but copying her methods wouldn't get them anywhere.
Just to be safe, Lily gathered all the hired hands and warned them repeatedly not to tell anyone how they grew the vegetables. If anyone was caught leaking secrets, they'd end up in court and spend the rest of their lives in jail.
After explaining how to plant off-season greenhouse vegetables, Lily had the workers start sowing seeds. With proper care, once winter arrived, the vegetables grown in the greenhouse would be rare and fetch a high price.
Once the fieldwork was done, Lily went to check on Wu Caiwei to see how her wedding preparations were going.
"Look at your skillful hands—the mandarin ducks on this quilt look almost real. I could never sew like you," Lily praised, smiling at Wu Caiwei's finished wedding quilt.
"You don't need to sew yourself. Your hands are meant for making money, not for embroidery," Wu Caiwei giggled, leaning against Lily. "A-Li, you've been so busy lately. Did you know Su Shimao got engaged again?"
"What, Su Shimao is engaged again? To whom?" Lily clicked her tongue. She'd been so busy, she really hadn't heard about this.
"To Liu Miss from the Liu family in town. She's loaded, and Su Shimao's been scheming for ages. He finally landed her," Wu Caiwei said, rolling her eyes.
Lily snorted. "So that's his game—marrying into money. But after what he pulled with you, who's going to trust him?"
