Quarreling Lovers

Lily Evans watched as Simon Yu’s face turned a shade of liver red right before her eyes, while Martin Wu strutted off, laughing triumphantly and leaving behind a dashing silhouette.

Simon Yu glared at Martin Wu’s departing figure, his eyes wide like brass bells. Unwilling to concede, he turned to Lily Evans and asked, “Chancellor Lily, did you say that just to save Martin Wu’s pride?”

Lily Evans smiled, “Of course not. Martin Wu just voiced what I’ve been thinking. I really do plan to establish a medical academy—and let women enroll too.”

Simon Yu’s look of disbelief grew even bigger, his face a picture of shock. “But—but I’ve never heard of women practicing medicine…”

“There’s never been a female Chancellor, a female Distinguished Professor, or a female teacher before either. But now, we have all three—so why not a female doctor? Women couldn’t do those things in the past because society kept them chained to the kitchen, made them mere accessories to men. But times have changed.” Lily Evans narrowed her eyes and flashed a mischievous grin at Simon Yu. Suddenly, she teased, “Simon, Martin Wu is as competitive as they come. If you keep butting heads with her, don’t expect her to ever be nice to you.”

Simon Yu’s expression suddenly turned awkward. He stammered, “Wh-why should I care if she’s nice to me? I—I don’t care what she thinks, really.”

Simon’s flushed face betrayed his true feelings, making Lily Evans burst out laughing as she shook her head and walked away.

Lily Evans could see it clearly now—Simon Yu and Martin Wu were the very definition of a bickering couple. Their way of getting along was to argue and banter. If they ever stopped, it just wouldn’t be them.

But as for when they’d finally break through that invisible barrier between them—who knew?

Everyone has their own destiny. Lily Evans couldn’t help much; all she could do was let fate take its course.

Lily Evans reminded Simon Yu to take good care of Mrs. Penny, but her mind was on Lola and Neil Zhao. So she headed straight to the Distinguished Professors’ Office to look for Lola.

As soon as Chancellor Lily arrived at the Distinguished Professors’ Office, Martin Wu, who had just gotten there herself, greeted her. "Chancellor Lily, are you here to discuss the medical academy? I just got back, and haven’t had time to draw up a plan yet. I’ll need a few more days."

Lily Evans shook her head. "Martin Wu, take your time with the plan, there’s no rush. I’m actually here to find Lola. Has she come back yet?"

Martin Wu looked around the office, but Lola was nowhere to be seen. Martin returned, puzzled, "Chancellor Lily, Lola isn’t here. That’s odd—she took half a day off this morning to handle a proposal, so she should be back by now. But I haven’t seen her."

"Lola’s not back yet?" Lily Evans frowned. Lola was usually very reliable and never skipped work for no reason. She’d only asked for half a day off, but it was already past noon and she still hadn’t returned. Where could she be?

Lily Evans sat down in the Distinguished Professors’ Office and sent her people to look for Lola. After all, Charleston wasn’t that big, and Lola and Neil Zhao together were pretty conspicuous—they wouldn’t just disappear.

As Lily Evans settled in, Martin Wu asked, "Chancellor Lily, when Lola comes back, should we tell her about Mrs. Penny’s miscarriage? Mrs. Penny is Lola’s mentor—she’ll definitely want to visit her."

Lily Evans bit her lip after hearing that. She still wasn’t sure if Lola had anything to do with Mrs. Penny’s miscarriage, so she replied, "Martin Wu, if we see Lola, let’s not mention it just yet."
