Side Effects

Evan Yang didn’t know what the so-called Sacred Lightning was truly like, and was curious to see it for himself. He stared at the transparent cylinder and asked, “So when the time comes, I just need to stand there?”

“That’s right. When the time comes, there will be lightning so powerful that even Heavenly Dao can’t withstand it. You’d better be mentally prepared.” The Patriarch looked at Evan Yang as he spoke.

Evan Yang smiled. “I understand.”

Seeing Evan Yang truly decided to go in, the Patriarch handed him the box and said, “Once you’re inside, open this box. The Strongest Weapon inside will appear and receive the baptism of the Sacred Lightning.”

“Alright.” Evan Yang took the box, then glanced at the Patriarch and the others, seeing that the three were already preparing to activate the Sacred Lightning ritual.

The originally dark surroundings were instantly lit up by ten beams of light, illuminating everything. The beams slowly moved toward the cylinder.

Once everything was ready, the Patriarch took out a purple command token. No one knew what was drawn on it, but he aimed the token at the beams and began chanting words in a language Evan Yang couldn’t understand.

At first, there was no reaction—everything was calm, almost like the quiet before a storm.

Burch and Little Thunder stood behind the Patriarch, not daring to make a sound. Only when the beams turned pale violet did a massive cloud mass appear in the air. Seeing it, Evan Yang was reminded of pill-tribulation clouds, but this one was clearly much stronger and more terrifying.

Evan Yang was curious how the cloud formed, especially since the lightning streaks across it were purple.

“Purple lightning?” Evan Yang muttered to himself.

“Kid, I suggest you step aside. This isn’t something you can handle.” As Evan Yang watched the scene, the Blood Demon Lord spoke in a deep voice.

“Senior, don’t worry. My body can withstand it,” Evan Yang replied.

“Do you know what kind of lightning this is?” asked the Blood Demon Lord.

“Isn’t it just purple lightning?” Evan Yang answered.

“That’s right—it’s purple lightning. But it’s also known as the strongest lightning in all existence, powerful enough to destroy the flesh and soul of Heavenly Dao experts. You’re courting death here.” The Blood Demon Lord advised.

“Didn’t I also withstand pill-tribulation last time? I’ll be fine,” Evan Yang said with a smile.

“Last time you faced pill-tribulation lightning aimed at a cultivation pill, not a person. That kind doesn’t harm the soul. But this is different—even if your body can endure the lightning, you can’t withstand its side effects: heart-devils, soul damage, and other complications.” The Blood Demon Lord explained.

Evan Yang paused for a moment, then replied, “Senior, since I promised them, I have to see it through. Besides, I believe I can make it.”

At that moment, the Patriarch said to Evan Yang, "It’s ready."

Evan Yang snapped back to himself, just in time to see the area around the light pillar already wrapped in purple currents. Holding the box, he ignored the Blood Demon Lord’s warning and walked toward the cylinder. Before he even got close, his hair and clothes felt as if they were being pulled—especially his hair, which felt like it might be yanked straight up.

Evan Yang quickly protected himself, circulating lightning within his body. Soon, his hair returned to normal and the strange sensations faded.

Seeing Evan Yang recover so quickly, the Patriarch and the others felt a surge of curiosity.

“Patriarch, do you think he’ll succeed?” Burch asked curiously.

“I don’t know. I’ve heard that Sacred Lightning doesn’t just have terrifying attack power—it also brings side effects. It all depends on his abilities,” the Patriarch replied.

Burch and Little Thunder both broke out in a cold sweat at that, while Evan Yang had already reached the cylinder and, for the first time, made direct contact with the purple lightning.

Powerful currents wrapped around Evan Yang—this was the strongest lightning he’d ever encountered. His hands trembled, but soon the lightning circulating inside him stabilized.

Once his hands stopped shaking, he took out the box and opened it. The Strongest Weapon floated out, and the powerful lightning, as if drawn to its favorite thing, began wildly devouring the artifact.

Standing next to the Strongest Weapon, Evan Yang was naturally affected.

Hallucinations began to appear before his eyes. “Is this another inner-heart illusion?” Evan Yang muttered, seeing the scenery around him change.

Sure enough, another illusion of White Moon appeared before Evan Yang. Seeing her, he muttered, “Seriously? Her again?”

For Evan Yang, it was puzzling. Why was it always a fake White Moon in these illusions? Aside from that one relationship, he’d only met her a handful of times. He really didn’t know what to make of it.

“Did you miss me?” This time, the illusion of White Moon was unusually gentle, not like before when she’d arrived fighting.

Evan Yang frowned. “Are you an illusion?”

“Me? You can think of me as an illusion, or as the real thing, can’t you?” White Moon smiled. Seeing her gentle smile, Evan Yang couldn’t help but think of that day.

“Still thinking about that day?” White Moon now stood right before Evan Yang, their eyes meeting. The subtle movement of her lips as she spoke made it hard for Evan to restrain himself.

Although the Blood Demon Lord couldn’t tell what was happening inside Evan Yang’s mind, he did notice that Evan’s blood was beginning to boil, and that his body was starting to show hints of turning green—a sign that only appeared when Evan was transforming. Alarmed, the Blood Demon Lord tried to call out to him, but Evan couldn’t hear anything from the outside world.

The Patriarch and the others also noticed Evan Yang’s abnormal state.

“Patriarch, what’s happening to him?” Burch asked, seeing Evan Yang’s skin shift from green to red.

“I don’t know. It’s strange. But I do know he’s trapped in his inner world right now. Who knows what he’s facing that’s making him act like this?” the Patriarch replied.
