An Incomprehensible Mindset
After Sam Evans left with Cynthia Green, Lily Evans and Xenia went into the room. "Xenia, what exactly happened today?"
Xenia bit her lip and said, "Here's what happened. Jasper Cheng has been coming to Moonlight Pavilion frequently, drinking and carousing. He’s a country bumpkin who thinks he’s rich, but his money means nothing here. After a few visits, he spent all his money and wanted to sell his family's maid to pay his debts."
We were about to notify his family for payment, but then the maid herself showed up, looking for her young master. Everyone at Moonlight Pavilion recognizes Miss Lana, so when Cynthia Green appeared, we immediately knew it was her.
Coincidentally, Sam Evans was also at Moonlight Pavilion looking for his daughter, so we called him over right away.
When Sam Evans arrived, Jasper Cheng was arguing with Cynthia Green. Jasper wanted to sell Cynthia, but she refused, saying she belonged to her young master and would follow him for life. When Jasper saw Cynthia wouldn’t agree to be sold, he suddenly started fighting with her and slapped her.
Sam Evans walked in just as this happened—he saw his long-lost daughter being hit and rushed to fight Jasper Cheng, but Cynthia Green stopped him.
Seeing the fight break out, I had Jasper Cheng locked up in the back, but Cynthia insisted on staying with him, so she followed along. Sam Evans wanted to stay with his daughter too, so he came as well, and that’s what you saw earlier.
Xenia finished her account in one breath, leaving Lily Evans utterly stunned.
Turns out Lana Evans was sold to that country bumpkin Jasper Cheng and had long left the capital. No wonder they couldn’t find her—they’d been looking in the wrong place!
But Jasper Cheng sounds like a real scumbag. Lana Evans must be out of her mind—her family finally found her, yet she refuses to escape her misery and insists on staying with Jasper?
Lily Evans simply couldn’t understand Lana Evans’s logic. But the urgent thing right now was to comfort Sam Evans.
Sam Evans had spent the past year searching day and night for his daughter, pouring his whole spirit into the task. Now that she was found but treated him like a stranger, Lily worried the blow would be too much for him.
"Keep questioning Jasper Cheng and see what you can get out of him," Lily told Xenia. Then she and Alexander Hayes hurried to Evans Manor.
Evans Manor.
Uncle George’s family was already bustling about. Aunt Martha was boiling water and gathering clean clothes with several maids to help Lana Evans wash and change.
Sam Evans sat at the doorway, looking utterly lost, clutching his head tightly.
“Uncle Sam, Aunt Martha,” Lily Evans and Alexander Hayes hurried inside.
“Oh, Lily and the Prince are back!” Aunt Martha came out of the house, wiping her tears. “Thank goodness we got your sister Lana home. You wouldn’t believe it—Lana’s covered in bruises, old and new, and it breaks my heart.”
“It’s my fault—I failed my daughter! I wasn’t a good father!” Sam Evans sobbed, the burly man crying like a child.
“Alexander, stay with Uncle Sam,” Lily said, comforting Sam Evans and asking Alexander Hayes to help him rest, while she pulled Aunt Martha aside and whispered, “Aunt Martha, when you washed Lana, did you notice if she had…?”
