Walking down the streets of Plumridge City, Landon Lu noticed that Los Angeles SWAT patrol cars had become much more frequent these past two days, giving him a sense that something big was brewing.
Is something major about to happen?
Tomorrow was the day he’d officially report to Los Angeles SWAT. Although there was still a month left until graduation at the School of Business, the school had already approved his early leave—he could skip the last month and still get his diploma.
He’d spent quite some time in this world now. After the initial excitement wore off, he found himself feeling a bit lost, missing his family from the real world.
He had no idea how long he’d be stuck in this world.
With a soft sigh, Landon headed back to his apartment.
The next morning at eight o’clock, Landon arrived at the Los Angeles SWAT base.
"Who are you?"
A SWAT officer on duty asked.
"My name is Landon Lu. I'm here to report in." Landon handed over his Identity Card.
One of the SWAT officers took the card and swiped it on the scanner nearby. Instantly, Landon's information popped up on the screen.
The officer handed back the Identity Card with a smile. "Welcome to Los Angeles SWAT, Landon. The onboarding office is in the first building right past the entrance."
"Thank you."
Landon took his Identity Card, strode into the SWAT base, and, following the officer’s directions, entered the first building, where he located the personnel office by the signs.
Inside the personnel office sat a lone female SWAT officer, idly browsing the Lightnet.
"Hello, I'm Landon Lu. I'm here to start onboarding!"
Hearing his voice, the female officer looked up, her eyes lighting up with enthusiasm. "Hi, Landon! I'm Amber Liu from the personnel office. Come on in—Captain Xiao already let me know you’d be starting today."
Amber Liu quickly helped Landon complete his onboarding paperwork, making him an official probationary SWAT officer.
"Come on, I’ll take you to pick up your uniform and weapon," Amber said.
"Are you sure it’s okay to leave the office unattended?" Landon asked, a little concerned.
Landon Lu shakes his head.
Amber Liu said, "Alright, let me give you a little background. The One-Eyed Thief loves stealing rare valuables and is extremely cunning. Over the years, police have responded many times but never caught him. This time, the higher-ups got word he's targeting Christie's auction lots. If we catch him, the Plumridge City SWAT base will earn major credit!"
"Still seems like overkill to send hundreds after one guy," Landon Lu said, unconvinced.
Amber Liu replied proudly, "That just shows you don't know! Two years ago, Seaking City's SWAT and armed police sent over a thousand people to catch the One-Eyed Thief, and he still got away. So don't underestimate him."
"So, is the One-Eyed Thief a Psychic Adept or a Warrior?" Landon Lu asked.
Amber Liu shook her head. "I have no idea. He’s just really mysterious, that’s all."
"Okay, enough about that. Let me show you how to shoot!"
Laser pistols aren’t like real-world firearms—there’s no recoil at all. Each energy cartridge supports a thousand shots, with an effective range of two hundred meters.
As for power, it’s impressive too—a laser pistol can punch through five centimeters of regular alloy steel plate at two hundred meters.
After explaining, Amber Liu handed the laser pistol to Landon Lu. "Go ahead, try shooting at the fifty-meter target."
"Alright, I’ll give it a shot."
Landon Lu took the laser pistol, switched it on, and aimed at the fifty-meter target. Compared to real-world handguns, laser pistols were much easier to handle.
Whoosh!
A five-inch beam of red laser shot out from the muzzle, hitting the target at fifty meters with a soft thud—dead center.
"Wow, you’ve got great instincts! Try the hundred-meter target next!" Amber Liu said, surprised.
So, Landon Lu locked onto the hundred-meter target.
He pulled the trigger, and the laser fired.
Pop!
With another soft sound, the laser hit the bullseye again.
"Oh my god, you’re a natural! Are you sure you’ve never used a laser pistol before?" Amber Liu exclaimed.
Amber Liu was even more shocked now.
"Of course not," Landon Lu replied with a smile.
"Alright, try the two-hundred-meter target!" Amber Liu urged.
Pop!
Landon Lu fired again—another bullseye.
Amber Liu stared blankly for a moment, then looked at Landon Lu with admiration. "You’re incredible."
"Just lucky," Landon Lu said modestly.
Amber Liu scoffed, "That’s just false modesty. When I hit the two-hundred-meter target, it took me three days of practice."
"Maybe I’m just naturally gifted at this," Landon Lu said.
"Maybe! How about trying moving targets?" Amber Liu suggested.
"Sure!" Landon Lu replied enthusiastically.
Soon, the two moved to the moving target training ground.
Amber Liu demonstrated first. Despite being an office worker, her speed was impressive. In just thirty seconds, she completed a moving target drill—out of a hundred moving targets, she hit ninety.
Compared to real-world special forces, she was several notches stronger—mainly because Amber Liu was a level 4 Warrior, with much greater physique and speed.
"Your turn," Amber Liu said.
Amber Liu returned to Landon Lu’s side and handed him the pistol.
"Alright!" Landon Lu responded.
This time, Landon Lu deliberately held back, taking forty seconds to finish the moving target drill, but still hit ninety out of a hundred.
"You—you’re a monster!" Amber Liu exclaimed.
Seeing Landon Lu score so high on his first moving target drill, Amber Liu couldn’t help but comment. His movements weren’t even standard—if he mastered them, he’d surpass her in no time.
