Chapter 286: Inhabiting

"Who are you, really?" Leon asked in a low voice, quietly casting Mindguard.

At this point, Leon had ten Mana Harnesses running at all times. With such defenses, almost no magical force could silently invade his mind. So, the voice echoing deep within his consciousness had to be either some mental power or a spectral force—and Mindguard was the nemesis of both.

However...

"Don't bother. Mindguard is useless against me." The voice from deep within Leon's mind rang out again, just as he cast the spell.

Leon couldn't help but curse under his breath.

This was seriously messed up...

How could something like this happen out of nowhere?

For a mage, this was fatal. A voice from deep within your mind could talk to you anytime, anywhere. That meant—even if you were meditating, even if you were casting a spell—you could be interrupted. No joke, for a mage, this meant living with the constant risk of magical backlash.

"Alright, just tell me—who are you?"

"Already forgotten so soon? Not long ago, you destroyed my body..." The voice echoing from deep within Leon's mind was slow, almost lazy, laced with a faint, mocking tone.

"Destroyed your body..." Leon frowned, racking his brain, but couldn't recall ever destroying anyone's body. Could it be one of those powerful corpses in the Void Graveyard, spawning a Wraith?

No, that's not right...

If it really was a Wraith possession, the Mana Harness would've triggered an alarm long ago. How could there be no reaction at all?

Wait a minute...

Destroyed the body...

Crystal Balance!

That's it—Crystal Balance. Only a Relic Spirit, something so bizarre, could slip through my Mana Harness and Mindguard without a sound. And only the Relic Spirit of Crystal Balance would complain so mournfully about me destroying its body.

You're the Crystal Balance!

Heh heh heh... You finally got half of it right.
