Cold Corpse

Luo Yichen began to change. Ever since The Lady Revenant bit him, his body felt lighter with each passing day, and a relentless, gnawing urge to drink blood haunted him.

But for reasons he couldn’t grasp, Luo Yichen always felt it was just a dream. Each morning, he found no bite marks on his neck. Yet as the bloodlust grew, doubt crept in—it couldn’t be a dream. Still, his body showed no outward change, leaving him lost and unsettled.

One night, when Luo Yichen could no longer resist, he burst into the chicken coop, seized a chicken, tore open its throat, and drank its blood dry. His wife saw everything and was horrified.

Luo Yichen broke down in tears, unable to understand what he was becoming. His wife had already sensed something was wrong and watched him each night. Strangely, after drinking blood, the craving vanished from his body.

The Arcane Society was in chaos. Practitioners were consumed with fighting malevolent spirits, leaving the revenant crisis to fester.

But the relief didn’t last. The urge to drink blood surged again in Luo Yichen. To ease the torment, he drank chicken blood, finding fleeting relief.

Soon, even that respite faded. Luo Yichen’s symptoms grew erratic—at first, months between cravings, then days. The cycle wore him down, body and soul.

Despair swallowed Luo Yichen. He couldn’t understand why this curse had chosen him. One day, his three senior brothers returned, warning him: he was becoming a Blood-Sucking Revenant. If he wanted to protect his loved ones, he had to go to Gourd Village before his revenant nature took over and killed those closest to him.

When Luo Yichen asked why, his brothers revealed the truth: the one who bit him was Luantian Xuekui, the Blood Revenants Clan leader. They had no idea why she had chosen to bite Luo Yichen herself.

Luo Yichen noticed his three senior brothers had changed. They seemed reborn, cheerful—no resentment in their eyes.

After his brothers left, Luo Yichen gathered his wife and children, explaining everything. He promised he would find a way to return.

Unable to bear the bloodlust, Luo Yichen left his family and traveled alone to Gourd Village. There, Eugene Henderson revealed the truth.

After Eugene Henderson transformed the brothers into revenants, they followed his orders, committing evil in the mortal world, luring Miles Spring to uncover the secret—all for an experiment.

The experiment succeeded. When Luo Yichen asked what it was, Eugene Henderson said nothing. Luo Yichen became a test subject for the Nether Syndicate.

Luo Yichen was meant to be Eugene Henderson’s subject, but Luantian Xuekui intervened while the other two clan leaders of the Nether Syndicate were away. No one dared defy her.

So Luo Yichen lived in Zombie Village, where walking dead brought him fresh blood every day. He resisted, but the bloodlust was relentless—he could only drink.

The brothers told Luo Yichen that revenants had targeted Corpse Handlers like them for a long time. After death, revenants took their bodies and turned them into monsters too.

They explained to Luo Yichen that ordinary revenants were emotionless, cold corpses. But after resurrection, the three brothers still felt emotions—joy, anger, sorrow, happiness—though those feelings were fading, slipping away.

They’d asked Luo Yichen to deliver corpses so they could raise more Corpse Handlers, who would one day be turned into revenants for Nether Syndicate experiments. The brothers didn’t know the details, but now they had eternal life, incorruptible bodies, and powerful backing.

Luo Yichen thought of his wife and children—they’d inherited the Corpse Handler trade. One day, the revenants would come for them too. He had to find a way.

Luo Yichen tried to return home, but found himself trapped—he couldn’t leave Gourd Village. Second Brother Victor Luo noticed and told him it was useless; once you’re a revenant, only the clan leader’s order can let you leave.

Day after day, Luo Yichen endured torment and waited. His body grew lighter, he could leap higher and farther, his teeth sharpened, his skin turned blue. One morning, he woke to find red veins crawling across his skin—and his heart had stopped.

Luo Yichen could still breathe, eat, and feel—but not pain. He could slice his own flesh, feel nothing, and the blood would not flow. After a while, the wound would heal itself.

Finally, Luo Yichen confronted Luantian Xuekui. He demanded to know why she had bitten him—why, after sparing him before, she had to take everything from him.

Luantian Xuekui gave no answer, only told Luo Yichen: you may go home.

With Luantian Xuekui’s permission, Luo Yichen raced home, urging his family to abandon the Corpse Handler trade, take their money, and leave—hoping to escape the Nether Syndicate’s grasp.

But when Luo Yichen returned, he found Miles Spring had gathered a crowd in his home. The moment they met, confrontation erupted—Miles Spring accused him of collaborating with revenants.

Luo Yichen was lost. His house was packed with Arcane Society members, all glaring at him. Then, in front of his wife and children, they attacked. Luo Yichen fought desperately to survive.

Grievously wounded, Luo Yichen fled. He didn’t know what had happened, but nowhere in the world could shelter him now. On the road, he finally lost control—baring his fangs at strangers.

After drinking human blood, Luo Yichen became cold—almost corpse-like. In the end, he returned to Gourd Village.

Facing Luantian Xuekui, Luo Yichen bared his fangs and fought in fury, only to be crushed. Luantian Xuekui didn’t kill him—she left quietly. Luo Yichen, still clinging to emotion, was devastated and demanded answers from his brothers.

But the brothers had no answers. When Luo Yichen healed, he was summoned—only then did he discover a hidden world beneath Gourd Village.

That place was the Nether Syndicate. Inside, Luo Yichen saw countless revenants. While still in shock, he met the clan leader Tan Tian.

Tan Tian told Luo Yichen bluntly—even if Luantian Xuekui hadn’t bitten him, he would still become a revenant. Furious, Luo Yichen refused to believe, convinced the revenants had destroyed him.

Tan Tian explained—the secret corpse-controlling technique wasn’t invented by Luo Yichen’s master, but taken from the Nether Syndicate. Tan Tian didn’t say more, only warned that long-term use would turn anyone into a revenant.

Luo Yichen refused to accept it, but Tan Tian soon brought his three senior brothers. Luo Yichen wept, but shed no tears—he shouted and struggled, but after calming, realized becoming a revenant was a slow process. He’d craved blood the day after being bitten, and his brothers turned immediately after death.

The experiment failed—Luo Yichen too would eventually lose all emotion. Tan Tian explained it wasn’t the revenants’ fault. From the moment Luo Yichen chose to follow his master and use the secret technique, he was doomed. The technique gradually turns people into revenants. His master had vanished—Tan Tian said he was alive, hiding for unknown reasons, and had done something in the Arcane Society, which led them to investigate and accuse Luo Yichen of aiding the revenants.

Confused and unconvinced, Luo Yichen stayed in the Nether Syndicate. Luantian Xuekui told him: once you’ve lost all emotion, you’ll return to your family. For now, your only path is to continue training in the Nether Syndicate with her.

Luo Yichen refused. His three senior brothers grew silent, acting more and more like true corpses. Luo Yichen reflected on his life—his wife had once urged him to quit, but he felt bound to his master’s legacy and couldn’t abandon the tradition.

As days passed, Luo Yichen grew numb to joy, anger, sorrow, or happiness—colder every day. At last, he left Gourd Village and rushed home once more.
