Even Immortals Cannot Save Them
Margaret Evans was frantic. She urged, "Rowan, hurry and check on Ali!"
Dr. Rowan Lin, deeply concerned for his daughter, quickly checked Ali’s pulse. Watching her father close his eyes with a grave expression, Ali’s heart nearly leapt out of her chest.
After a long moment, Dr. Rowan Lin opened his eyes, his gaze dark and troubled.
Margaret Evans knew her husband’s temperament. Seeing his expression, her heart skipped a beat. She grabbed his arm and shook him hard: "Rowan, did Ali and the baby get poisoned? Say something! Please, just say something! You’re going to worry me to death!"
Dr. Rowan Lin’s eyes were filled with helplessness and sorrow.
Ali looked at her father, her lips trembling, feeling utterly drained of strength. She whispered, "Dad, tell me honestly—am I poisoned too?"
Dr. Rowan Lin let out a long sigh. "Ali... I’m sorry. I... I’ve failed you..."
Ali felt as if struck by lightning. Her vision went black and she nearly fainted.
Quentin Lin reacted quickly, pinching Ali’s philtrum and shaking her hard. "Ali, hang in there! There has to be a way to save the baby—there must be! Don’t give up!"
"Good, Quentin, good child..." Ali weakly stroked Quentin Lin’s head, looking at his anxious little face as tears streamed down her cheeks.
