Journey to Japan

The plane finally touched down at Narita International Airport in Tokyo. When Shawn Young and his group stepped out, it was already 5 PM local time, and the air carried a bit of a chill.

Rachel Sasaki, who came along to Tokyo, was feeling all kinds of complicated. Though she was Japanese by birth, she’d grown up abroad with her father and had never actually visited her homeland. So now, she was visibly excited, her big eyes darting around curiously—who knows what was running through her mind.

May Gu, on the other hand, looked totally unfazed. She’d been to Japan plenty of times before. As a hall leader for the Thirteen Enforcers in the Asia Division, she often came here to handle business on behalf of Luna Xiao, basically acting as the boss’s stand-in. Japan was nothing new to her.

Like Rachel, this was also Shawn Young and Luna Xiao’s first time setting foot in this island nation. Shawn was still itching to teach a lesson to the mustachioed Japanese guy who’d messed with him on the plane, but as soon as they landed, that guy vanished into the crowd. With so many people at the airport, Shawn had no idea where he’d gone.

Shawn felt a bit frustrated, but there wasn’t much he could do for now. He figured he’d look for the guy outside, so he followed May Gu out of the airport.

This time, Shawn had deliberately put on a pair of sunglasses. As he walked from the exit to the baggage claim, he noticed through the tinted lenses that there was an electronic scanner mounted on the ceiling. Its red light flashed ominously. These sunglasses were a gift from Zhen Yaoyao—when he looked closer, he realized the scanner was a Facial Recognition System, its infrared beam sweeping over every face in the baggage area. Shawn couldn’t help but be surprised; he had no idea what was going on.

Seeing Shawn’s puzzled look, May Gu smiled and stepped up to explain: “Heh, that’s the Facial Recognition System. The Ministry of Defense put it in to keep international terrorists out of Japan. It works by scanning the muscles in your face—sure, anyone can get plastic surgery, but you can’t fake your smile. That’s how the system works.”

“Whoa, that thing’s really that powerful? Did it just grab my info?” Shawn asked, a little freaked out.

May Gu grinned, “Don’t worry. You’re from China, and you haven’t registered in Japan. Besides, the system isn’t perfect. Look over there—” She pointed to a nearby Westerner with blond hair and blue eyes.

“Hmm, I see him. Who is that guy?” Shawn glanced over, but couldn’t spot anything unusual about the Western man.
