In the empty, windswept field, nothing but sand and dust swirled around. There was nothing here except for thirteen solitary pillars. We stood beside the one marked with the number 1.
Xu Fu crouched quietly at the base of the pillar, his hands feeling along its surface.
"Since we've already come this far, you must have discovered something, Xu Fu."
"You could say that, John Chou. But I need to confirm a few things first. Adam, come here."
Adam Dale immediately walked over, his cheeks still swollen. He opened his mouth and, with a loud crunch, bit down on a protruding stone on the pillar. He started gnawing fiercely, but after a long while, both of Adam's teeth had been knocked out, blood streaming from his mouth. Yet he hadn't managed to damage the pillar in the slightest.
"It's too hard, Xu Fu. I can't bite through it."
"Try again."
Watching, I felt a chill run through me. Adam Dale's mouth was already full of blood, but he kept trying to bite off a piece of the pillar. Not even a small piece—he couldn't even leave a scratch. The Immortality Society had already tested the hardness of these pillars with brute force.
"Stop wasting your energy."
I muttered, and Xu Fu chuckled, placing a hand on Adam Dale's back.
