Codex of Ascension

As soon as the middle-aged man, David Cheung, was shoved out by the crowd, a fierce wind whipped up. The swirling gray mist quickly closed in around him.

David Cheung looked around nervously. The once bright sky was now completely dark, shrouded in gray haze and whipped by a chilling wind. Suddenly, an icy cold swept through him, and he looked up to see a hazy figure floating right above his head—Wendy Lam.

In the chilling wind and mist, a woman with disheveled hair and dressed all in white drifted in midair. A gust sent her hair flying, revealing a ghastly pale face. Her complexion was bruised and purple, and when she stretched her neck, a clear black mark could be seen around her throat!

"Ah—Wendy Lam! You—aren't you dead?!" David Cheung immediately recognized the woman.

"Heh—what a joke. Of course I'm dead! You think a living person could float in midair?" Wendy Lam sneered, her voice echoing with a supernatural chill.

"Ah!! Ghost—you're a ghost—a ghost!! Help!" David Cheung's eyes bulged in terror as he screamed. His legs buckled and he collapsed to the ground, losing control of his bowels. A foul stench filled the air—he was truly scared out of his wits.

"Heh, David Cheung, you heartless bastard! You bullied me for years, and then you raped and murdered me! You dumped my body in the pond! But you never expected I'd come for you as a ghost! You were so brutal and savage when you attacked me—look at you now, so pathetic! Hahaha—" Wendy Lam glared at the collapsed David Cheung, her laughter chilling to the bone.

David Cheung was scared nearly out of his mind. He lay on the floor, trembling uncontrollably, his face turning blue. Slapping himself repeatedly, he babbled incoherently, "Wendy Lam—I'm a beast, I'm an animal, I wronged you!!"

"Heh—David Cheung! You were twisted and cruel when you abused me! Now you say you're sorry? Too late—I've come to claim your life!" Wendy Lam shrieked, her ghostly form swooping down from above.

"Wait—" Shawn Young's voice rang out. He grabbed David Cheung by the collar and yanked him out of the swirling gray mist.

"Uh—Mr. Shawn, why won't you let me kill him?!" Wendy Lam hovered in the air, her ghostly face twisted with emotion.

"Wendy Lam, you know the boundaries between the three realms—humans and ghosts must walk separate paths. If you kill him, you'll break the laws of yin and yang, add to your own karmic debt, and suffer heavenly punishment—eternal torment in the cycle of reincarnation. So, listen to me and let the law handle it! Expose his crimes to the world, let the truth come out, and let the law punish him. I believe the Hong Kong police will handle this case!" Shawn Young advised her.

"Alright! I'll listen to you, Mr. Shawn!" Wendy Lam nodded, her ghostly form shimmering.

"Don't worry, I'll make him confess right now—" Shawn Young nodded, then stepped out of the barrier. He coldly addressed the terrified David Cheung: "David Cheung, you saw what happened. Don't say I didn't warn you—if you want to survive tonight, you'd better confess! Otherwise—heh—you won't even get the chance to die!"

David Cheung was completely cowed. Nodding frantically, he broke down in tears and confessed how he murdered Wendy Lam.

After Wendy Lam's mother remarried David Cheung, the family depended on the income from his mahjong parlor. Wendy lost her voice in the household, became a neglected, troubled girl, and often wandered the streets. But no matter how late it got, she always came home at night.

Wendy Lam was young and pretty, with a well-developed figure. David Cheung, addicted to gambling and lust, secretly drooled over her and had tried to harass her more than once, but never found the chance—though he knew she came home late every night.

Finally, after some planning, David Cheung found his chance. On a dark, windy night, he waited on her route home, jumped her from behind, pinned her to the ground, tied up her hands, feet, and neck with rope, tore off her clothes, and committed a monstrous crime! After he was done, afraid she'd expose him, he killed her and dragged her body to the pond in Kingwood Village, dumping it to cover his tracks!

What happened next was beyond anyone's expectations. Ever since Shawn Young got involved by accident, everything came to light. As the saying goes, 'the net of heaven is vast and lets nothing slip through'—fate had its own plan!

After David Cheung confessed his crimes to the police and villagers, the gray mist finally lifted from around him.

"Good! Now that all the evidence is clear, let the police handle the case! Let's head back, I'll get you some clothes—" Shawn Young said to the gray mist.

Whoosh—the gray mist darted toward the pond and vanished into the water in an instant.

Shawn Young turned around and saw Rachel Sasaki walk over. He said to her, "Rachel, get her some clothes!"

"Hehe—no problem!" Rachel Sasaki giggled, giving her right hand a shake. Suddenly, a leaf appeared in her palm. She muttered a spell and tossed the leaf into the pond—"Pop!" With a flash, the leaf turned into a puff of green smoke and quickly sank.

"Alright, it's done! You can fish her out now!" Rachel Sasaki clapped her hands.

Shawn Young called over Sergeant Louis Liu and had his divers dive into the pond again. Sure enough, within minutes, the big bag was brought to shore by the frogmen.

The forensic doctor opened the bag, revealing a soaking wet female corpse—Wendy Lam. Strangely, she was dressed in fresh, green clothes that fit her perfectly, despite being drenched.

The villagers quietly dispersed as the police got busy. David Cheung was loaded into the police car, and the case was finally wrapped up.

By now it was already 5:30 p.m. Rainie Cheng and Sergeant Mandy Chung, both on duty, stayed to help at the scene. Shawn Young and Rachel Sasaki stepped aside, discussing where to grab a bite, when Shawn's phone rang.

He picked up and heard a familiar female voice: "Shawn Young, where are you? Hurry over! My engagement dinner is about to start!!"
