Interrupting and Blocking Ninth Royal Uncle and Serena From Being Together
As soon as Serena stepped out, both Bella Qin and the Lord of Liancastle stopped talking and turned to look at her. Bella, as if oblivious to Serena’s fury, bounced up cheerfully: “Sister Serena, you’re finally out! Uncle Lian came with an edict from the Retired Emperor just to see you. Let me introduce you—this is…”
“No need, I know exactly who he is.” Serena cut Bella off coldly, her face severe. She turned to Liancastle’s lord and said sharply, “Lord Liancastle, whatever business you have, please take your men and leave first. The inner residence of Feng Manor is not a place anyone can barge into.”
So what if you have an edict from the Retired Emperor? I could get one from the current Emperor if I wanted.
“My apologies—I truly didn’t know Miss Feng was busy. I’ve come to your door for days now and never managed to meet you. Today I heard you hadn’t left the manor, so I brought my people and tried my luck. I didn’t mean to interrupt your important work.” Lord Liancastle sounded apologetic, but every word blamed Serena for forcing him to break in.
If Serena hadn’t refused to see him for days, he wouldn’t have stormed in like this.
“Don’t be angry, Sister Serena. Uncle Lian really does have something important to discuss with you—he just got anxious.” Bella Qin, never one to read the room, smiled and tried to smooth things over, as if Serena hadn’t just snapped at her.
Serena had no energy to argue with Bella and simply ignored her, turning to Lord Liancastle: “This isn’t the place for serious discussion. If you have something to say, let’s go to the main hall.”
Lord Liancastle wanted to give Serena a hard time, but he knew this wasn’t the moment. In Eastlyn, all he could do was borrow the Retired Emperor’s name to intimidate her a little. Now that Serena had yielded, he wouldn’t make a scene. He signaled his men to step back and made a show of deference: “After you, Miss Feng.”
Serena nodded at Lord Liancastle but didn’t move forward. Instead, she turned to the Eighteen Riders: “Listen up—no matter who comes, no matter whose orders they claim, if anyone dares make a racket outside this cabin, shoot them dead. Ignore any edicts from the Retired Emperor or the Empress Dowager. If we need an imperial order, I’ll go straight to the current Emperor myself.”
As soon as she stepped out, Serena saw the Lord of Liancastle and Bella Qin chatting like old friends. Only then did she remember that Bella Qin and Storm Cloud Bu had apparently spent some time in Liancastle.
Lord Liancastle’s face turned green, then white. Bella Qin, as naive as ever, nodded along: “Brother Sixing was saving someone just now. If you’d disturbed him and made him slip, that would’ve been terrible. Uncle Lian, you really shouldn’t have shouted like that—it was very rude.”
Lord Liancastle’s face grew even uglier. For once, Serena gave Bella a rare approving glance—sometimes innocence had its uses, and those words hit the mark.
Of course, Serena wasn’t one to press her advantage endlessly. Seeing Lord Liancastle about to explode, she graciously led him to the main hall.
Old fox that he was, Lord Liancastle had regained his composure by the time they reached the main hall. But Serena had already claimed the seat of honor, forcing him to sit below her—his plan to overpower her with momentum fell flat.
Lord Liancastle drew a deep breath and steadied himself, speaking as gently as possible: “Miss Feng, I’m sure you know why I’ve come. Liancastle has always had a good relationship with Ninth Royal Uncle. On his account, could you give me some face and release our people? Liancastle will remember your kindness.”
He’d used the Retired Emperor’s name to break into Feng Manor, but now he didn’t dare mention it again to pressure Serena into releasing Jason Lan. If the retired emperor’s authority were truly so effective, Liancastle would’ve already struck a deal to have Jason freed.
Serena was unmoved. She shot back coldly, “What friendship does Liancastle have with Ninth Royal Uncle? I’ve never heard Nolan mention it. If you’re so close, why have you tried to kill me—Nolan’s acknowledged woman—again and again?” Her gaze was sharp. Lord Liancastle looked puzzled at first, but when Serena mentioned the ‘street ambush,’ he realized exactly what she meant.
How did Serena uncover something so secret? Or was she bluffing?
Lord Liancastle kept his face blank, searching Serena’s expression for any sign of weakness. After all she’d endured, Serena wasn’t someone who’d let anything slip.
Left with no other choice, Lord Liancastle feigned ignorance, refusing to admit anything.
Kidnapping Feng Jin could be explained away, but mobilizing so many men and risking everything to kill Serena in broad daylight? There was no way to justify that. If Lord Liancastle admitted it, he’d have to pay a steep price to get Jason Lan back.
Serena had expected Lord Liancastle to deny it, but she hadn’t anticipated how thoroughly he’d play dumb—even going so far as to accuse her of framing him to gain leverage over Liancastle.
Hmph…
Serena laughed coldly in her fury. “Liancastle? It’s just a tiny speck of land. Why would I risk my life to frame you?”
“That’s not quite right, Miss Feng. Liancastle may be small compared to Eastlyn, but for you, it’s a treasure land.” Lord Liancastle’s confidence only grew as Serena’s anger flared, as if her irritation delighted him.
“A treasure land indeed—a feng-shui treasure.”
Perfect for burying the dead. Who knows who Liancastle will use it for next…
