A Conversation with Duke Field

1/4/2026

Ethan Yin darted inside and performed a flawless aristocratic bow to Duke Field.

Duke Field was instantly intrigued.

"My name is Ethan Yin. I'm three years and five months old. May I talk to you about Miles Gu?" Ethan's eyes sparkled as he looked at Duke Field.

"Of course, please have a seat." Duke Field nodded with a smile.

Ethan sat gracefully in front of Duke Field, his smile warm and charming. "I'd like to discuss something with you. After Miles goes back to the UK, may I visit often to keep him company?"

Duke Field was a little surprised. "Would your family agree to that?"

"I'll make sure my mom and dad agree," Ethan replied confidently.

"Alright." Duke Field grew more interested in this clever little boy. "Can you tell me, is coming to the UK just to keep Miles company?"

"How could Miles keep up his Chinese without my help? We'll always be together." Ethan answered, his earnest expression making Duke Field chuckle.

Ethan continued, "No one knows Chinese classics better than Grandpa, but he teaches at Saint Diana Academy. So I have to learn from him, then teach Miles! Miles is Mom's son and Grandpa's grandson—if his Chinese is terrible, Grandpa would be embarrassed!"

Duke Field suddenly felt jealous of Ethan Yin’s grandfather!

How could anyone have such a clever and mischievous grandson?

“Mom says, no matter where Miles goes, he’ll always be her child, and he’ll always be my brother. We’ll always be family. Your Grace, do you agree?” Ethan tilted his head at Duke Field, his eyes earnest and hopeful.

Looking into Ethan’s sparkling eyes, Duke Field—who’d never known the joy of grandchildren—suddenly felt his heart soften.

He couldn’t help but secretly wish: if only this clever boy were his grandson!

“If you call me Grandpa, I’ll agree,” Duke Field finally gave in to Ethan’s irresistible charm and said, “Then I’ll let you visit as often as you like, and stay as long as you want.”

Ethan’s eyes lit up even more. He sweetly changed how he addressed him: “Thank you, Grandpa! Mom says the more elders you have, the luckier you are. Now I have another grandpa—does that mean I’ll be even luckier? I’ll share my luck with you, so you’ll be lucky too!”

Duke Field couldn’t stop grinning.

Now that Miles Gu was the Field Family’s heir, they were truly doing everything they could to save him.

Jiro Hirayama joined the research team too.

Miles’s condition was different from everyone else’s. This sudden fever and surge in his body’s energy made his research-loving uncle and Jiro Hirayama instantly interested.

Jiro Hirayama, a biochemical expert, was fascinated by Miles’s unusual case. He dove into the lab and refused to come out.

Three days straight.

The team worked for three days and nights, without rest.

To speed things up, several researchers from the Yun Family’s institute joined the team.

After three days, the lab doors finally opened.

Jiro Hirayama, looking energized, stepped out as the team’s representative. Seeing everyone waiting anxiously, he beamed and announced, “We’ve found the cause and a solution! Cici, if you’d like, I can check Ethan Yin too? They’re the most perfect examples of evolution I’ve ever seen.”

Cecilia Gu immediately refused, “Don’t even think about it! My son isn’t a lab rat! Just tell me—when will Miles recover?”

“Don’t worry. His coma is just his body’s way of protecting itself. In fact, his condition is surprisingly good. It’s amazing—Miles didn’t inherit the Field Family’s genetic defect.” Jiro looked astonished, then with curiosity, added, “Now I’m really curious about the woman who gave birth to Miles.”

Rona Muir replied irritably, “No one will ever know! It’s been too long, too complicated to trace. So, when will Miles wake up?”

“Probably ten days to half a month? Maybe even a month, who knows. But don’t worry, Miles is stable. I have to say, the Yun Family’s medicine is really impressive… I’m even thinking about checking out their institute myself.” Jiro answered nonchalantly.

Cecilia Gu felt a wave of relief wash over her, knowing Miles was out of danger.

As she came back to herself, she realized the exhaustion from constant stress had overtaken her.

“Finally, he’s safe.” Cici grabbed Rona Muir’s hand. “I need to rest for a bit.”

Cici practically fled in exhaustion.

Jiro Hirayama wanted to chase after her, but Charles Yin stopped him and, watching Cici’s retreating figure, said, “Let her have some peace. When Miles wakes up, he won’t be her son anymore. She’s hurting.”

Jiro thought it over—he couldn’t win against Charles Yin anyway, so he gave up.

Rona Muir helped Cici back to her room. Instead of resting, Cici hugged Rona tightly and silently cried, “Miles, I still couldn’t protect him.”

Rona, who knew Cici best, gently patted her shoulder. “Maybe this isn’t a bad thing for Miles. He’s a thoughtful kid. Even if he’s in the UK, he’ll come back to China to find you someday.”

“I know, but I just feel awful.” Cici said sadly. “I can’t say any of this outside, especially not to Charles Yin. If I did, he’d do anything to get Miles back, even if it meant war with the Field Family. Both sides would lose, and I don’t want that. I’ve kept these feelings bottled up for so long, but I can’t say a word.”

Rona Muir, feeling sorry for her, patted Cici’s shoulder. “If you need to cry, just cry. I won’t laugh at you.”

“I don’t even know when I’ll see Miles again. The UK is so far from China. Even if I want to see him, I can’t just go whenever I want. What worries me most is, when Miles wakes up, he’ll find his guardianship has changed hands. Will he be sad? Will he think I abandoned him? I promised him, no matter what, I’d never leave him. I broke my promise.” Tears streamed down Cici’s face.

“How will I ever face him again? Rona, I’ve lost my son! I gave him away with my own hands.” Cici sobbed. “My son… I sent him away… I’m so useless, I couldn’t even protect my own child.”

“This isn’t your fault.” Rona tried to comfort her, though she knew her words sounded hollow. “Maybe he’ll understand someday.”

Cici hugged Rona tightly. “Ever since I can remember, I knew I wasn’t welcome. I never dared to hope for anything that wasn’t mine—not even love. I’ve always lived so cautiously and humbly, just trying to grow up. I thought things would get better when I grew up, but life just played a bigger joke on me. What I want is still out of reach. I just want Mom to be healthy and happy, but in the end, I learned she was just a pawn my grandmother placed beside me. When I couldn’t be controlled, that pawn was discarded.”

“All I ever wanted was an ordinary life, to be happy with my family. But I keep getting hurt by people I don’t even know, forced to make impossible choices. I’m just a regular person—why do I have to bear so many responsibilities I can’t handle? The Yun Family owes the Mo Family, so why do I have to pay the price? If I had no children, no attachments, maybe sacrificing myself wouldn’t matter. But… I’m not alone anymore. I have people I want to protect. I have kids. I have things I can’t let go of.”

“Now, I can’t even protect my own son. What else can I do? Why am I so useless?” Cici finally let all her pent-up emotions pour out. “I just want to find a place where no one can reach me, far from all these responsibilities and promises, and just live simply. Why is that so hard?”

Rona didn’t say anything. She just listened to Cici vent and offered silent comfort.

When Cici was finally cried out, Rona helped her sit down and brought her a glass of water.

Cici’s eyes were red from crying.

“Maybe, while Miles is still unconscious, we can do something for him.” Rona squatted in front of Cici, speaking earnestly. “Miles is my godson too. I can’t bear to lose him either. But, Cici, this is the best way—for Miles, for us, for everyone. He’s inheriting the Field Family legacy. It’s good for him.”

“What can we do?” Cici looked at Rona, confused.

“While Miles is still asleep, let’s plan. When he wakes up, we’ll take him on a long trip—show him, wherever he goes, his family loves him. Family means being together. Even if we only get one trip a year, let’s make sure his memories are full of love.” Rona said softly, “Didn’t Miles always love traveling with you? Before, you didn’t have your memories back or the means. But now, things are different. Let’s not let him down.”

Cici’s eyes suddenly brightened. “Really? Can we?”
