Treating a Worn Shoe Like Treasure
Lily Evans looked utterly unconcerned, which made Helen Parker tremble with rage. She cursed inwardly, wondering how Lily could be so shameless.
"Are you going to report me or not? If not, then get lost!" Lily snapped, impatiently trying to shoo Helen away. She’d long figured out that Helen was convinced Lily had something going on with the owner of Savory House, and was trying to use it to blackmail her.
Since it was blackmail, of course Helen wouldn’t actually make a scene. Otherwise, she’d lose her leverage over Lily Evans.
Helen Parker, fuming, finally lost it and shouted, "Lucky, you idiot! Your wife is sleeping with the owner of Savory House for money! You spineless cuckold!"
Lucky froze for a moment, but before Lily could say anything, he shot back, "You’re the cuckold! Say one more bad thing about my wife and I’ll—throw you out!"
Lucky glanced around, grabbed a thick wooden stick from the ground, and hurled it at Helen Parker.
Helen Parker jumped back in fright, dodging the stick, and yelled, "You clueless fool! Treating trash like treasure!"
Lucky glared at Helen, cheeks puffed with anger. "You’re the real tramp! And a gossip, too!"
It was the first time Lily Evans had heard Lucky curse someone. Seeing his red face and wide eyes was just too adorable—she couldn’t help but burst out laughing and tugged his arm. "Don’t get mad. People like her aren’t worth it."
Lucky nodded earnestly. "I’ll listen to you, Lily. I won’t get angry with her."
"Good boy!" Lily grinned at Lucky’s adorable expression, suddenly tempted to kiss him right then and there.
Seeing the two of them openly flaunt their affection, Helen Parker was so furious she could practically see steam coming out of her ears. She cursed, "Lily Evans, I’ll expose your dirty secrets and see how long you can keep showing off!"
"Go ahead, hurry up, do it now!" Lily crossed her arms and looked at Helen. "I, Lily Evans, haven’t done anything shameful. If you want to sling mud, go ahead—I have ways to prove my innocence. As for you, I wonder what Grandma Evans would do if she found out you tried to extort money from me behind her back! Tsk tsk, three thousand taels is a lot. You want it all for yourself? Aren’t you afraid of choking?"
Helen Parker was stunned, her face turning ashen. She had no real proof of anything between Lily Evans and the owner of Savory House—she’d only wanted to scare Lily into handing over some silver.
But she hadn’t expected Lily Evans to turn the tables on her, even dragging Grandma Evans into it!
Helen’s real intention was to keep all the silver for herself, but after Lily’s warning, she didn’t dare say another word.
Lily Evans saw Helen looking like she’d swallowed a bug, and her mood instantly improved. "Tsk tsk, you tried to ruin my reputation, but don’t forget—I’m still an Evans. I’m your precious son’s cousin. If you’re not worried about your son’s chances at the exams, then go ahead and throw mud at me."
"You! You!" Helen Parker was caught off guard—Lily Evans had struck her right where it hurt.
"You what? If you’re done, get out." Lily snorted with disdain. "Let me tell you, I don’t have any silver now, so don’t even think about trying anything."
Helen Parker didn’t believe for a second that Lily had no money, but seeing she couldn’t get anything out of her, she slunk away in defeat.
After Helen left, Lucky looked at Lily Evans, still worried. "Lily, did she really mean what she said?"
Lily Evans reached out and pinched Lucky’s cheek. "Don’t be silly. She’s just jealous because we’re happy. Ignore her nonsense."
Lucky nodded, his eyes shining with trust and adoration. The two of them shared a warm moment, their bond stronger than ever.
