Arthur Evans's Secret
"Lily, why are you upset?" Lucky looked at Lily Evans, who was sighing, and held her hand tenderly.
Lily shook her head. Seeing Lucky's concerned face made her feel a bit better. She forced a smile and said, "It's nothing. I'm just scaring myself—worrying over nothing."
"Lily, was it the Evans Family bullying you again?" Lucky clenched his fists angrily.
Lily sighed. If it were only the Evans Family, she wouldn't be afraid. But if Mr. Leo Liu's influence was added to the mix, as a mere commoner, Lily really had no way out.
"Lily, it's all my fault for being useless..." Lucky lowered his head in guilt. "If only I were a high official, then anyone who bullied you—I’d chop off their heads..."
"Lucky, you're already wonderful. I'm really happy being with you." Lily cupped Lucky's face. As long as she saw her silly husband, she genuinely felt joy from the bottom of her heart.
"Really?" Lucky looked up at Lily, his voice soft and uncertain.
"Really!" Lily replied, her eyes crinkling with a smile. She tossed thoughts of Mr. Leo Liu and Arthur Evans out of her mind. Whatever came, let it come—Lily Evans was no pushover!
Meanwhile, in Haizi Village, the Evans Family was boasting that Arthur Evans was about to marry the richest heiress in the region. The villagers buzzed with excitement over the news.
Grandma Evans and Helen Parker enjoyed the flattery from the villagers. Helen Parker swore that once their family became wealthy, she would make Lily Evans’s household pay for every slight.
Most villagers were honest folk, but there were always a few troublemakers. In the past, they’d envied Lily Evans’s wealth; now, hearing her family might be in trouble, they couldn’t wait to gloat and kick her when she’s down.
The happiest of all were Mrs. Tang and the Tofu Beauty sisters.
Mrs. Tang was more delighted than if she’d found money. She perched on a wooden stump, gossiping, lavishing praise on Arthur Evans, and spreading nasty rumors about Lily Evans.
Lily Evans paid no attention to the village gossip. She’d prepared a generous dowry for Wu Caiwei, from jewelry to bedding and daily essentials, packed it all into a basket for Lucky to carry, and delivered it to Wu Caiwei’s house at dawn.
On the way back, as they passed a patch of weeds on the edge of the village, Lily suddenly heard rustling from a nearby house. She quickly grabbed Lucky and hid behind a big tree.
From the grass came voices that made one blush and heart race. The woman’s coy voice drifted on the wind: “Good brother, Arthur, I… I can’t hold on anymore… ah…”
Then Arthur Evans’s voice followed: “…Good girl, just like that… mm…”
Lily swallowed hard. Those voices were the Tofu Beauty and Arthur Evans!
When did the Tofu Beauty and Arthur Evans get together?!
The sounds from the grass grew louder and more tangled, making Lily’s heart pound.
Lily pressed her lips together, crouching quietly behind the tree, not daring to make a sound. After a long while, the raucous noises finally stopped. Arthur Evans and the Tofu Beauty emerged from the grass, their clothes in disarray. The Tofu Beauty leaned coquettishly against Arthur Evans: “Top Scholar, when will you bring me home?”
Arthur Evans fumbled at the Tofu Beauty’s chest, laughing: “You’re such a tease. What’s the rush? Once I marry Lucy Leo, I’ll bring you home.”
The Tofu Beauty giggled, swaying: “Top Scholar, what if your powerful father-in-law doesn’t agree?”
A flash of cruelty passed through Arthur Evans’s eyes as he snorted: “Once Lucy Leo marries me, she’s mine. If a husband wants a concubine, the wife can’t say no! Besides, Lucy’s carrying my child—she’s completely under my control. She wouldn’t dare refuse! My sweet Tofu Beauty, just wait!”
The two flirted a while longer before sneaking off in different directions.
Lily clicked her tongue. Arthur Evans hadn’t even married the rich heiress yet, and he was already fooling around with a widow. He’s got guts! If his hot-tempered, vengeful father-in-law found out, things would get interesting.
